Why will my Samsung Galaxy S2 not connect to home wifi??
Hi,
I got a new Samsung Galaxy S2 yesterday, and while the 3g internet is working fine, I cannot get it to connect to my wifi at home.
I'm with Sky if that makes a difference?
The phone connects to other wifi spots such as the cloud and the wifi in the Three shop where I bought it.
I've tried turning it on/off, resetting the router etc but it just says 'authenticating' and then 'disconnected'. It doesn't even connect for a few seconds.
Would really appreciate any help!
Thanks

Is your router secured? If so, are you definitely typing the right password in?

I was having the same 'authenticating' and then 'disconnected' 5 seconds after trying to connect my GS2 with my Linksys WRT54GS router. The latest linksys firmware didn't work.
Im now using router firmware from dd-wrt.com and its connecting and staying connected
Device(s): SGSII GT-i9100 Root. Firmware: NEAT ROM LITE LSS. Jelly Bean 4.1.2 Baseband BVLS2 Kernel: Siyah

From my experience, Sky routers are a nightmare to connect to at the best of times.
The problem obviously isn't with your phone as it is connecting to other routers.
I can only suggest throwing yourself on the mercy of the Sky Customer Service Department I'm afraid.
If you're using WPA/WPA2 security, check that the router is set to use AES encyption. I saw similar behaviour using TKIP with my Desire Z, and switching encryption protocol sorted it out.

I have the same problem with the wifi, and before anyone advises it is a router problem I have no problems with a Samsung Omnia 7, Iphone 3, two windows 7 lap tops and a playstation 3.
My two work routers service 16 phones and it is only my Samsung Galaxy S2 that drops out or fails to connect.
And yes, I have tried all the sleep settings along with hard resets, firmware updates and disabeling 3g.
Great phone but something is missing in the WIFI department.

I was having the same problems, it would constantly say Authenticating... Remembered.. Disabled and never connect. I have changed the encryption to WPA2 AES and it works fine now.

How many devices are connected to the router simultaneously, and are they using DHCP to obtain their network addresses? If the latter, how long is the lease time? I'm wondering if the pool of available IP addresses has been exhausted, meaning that the GS2 is unable to obtain one from the router.

Hi Everyone
I received a new handset on Thursday and had a similar problems with limited or no wifi connection.
I updated the firmware, which did help a lot.
I also downloaded various wifi apps that identified the signals and a wifi fixer that locked the signal, band 11 that helped a lot.
I purchased the best Netgear N300 Duel Band Modem Router and the phone is flying all the wifi apps have been removed and I can use it half way down the street.
Unfortunately all my neighbors now live in my wifi shadow.
The SGS2 has a very poor wifi reception compared to all my other devices and if it was not for the overall appeal of the device I would of returned it rather than accommodating it with expensive new wifi upgrades.
I thank the eclipse_mint team at eBay for their time, patience and effort. Samsung please note the GS2 has very poor wifi reception

Reason: Solution
First up, great idea with the video. A picture really is worth a thousand words.
Tbh I don't know what's up. I could see a valid IP address on the GS2, so provided your router is on the same 192.168.0.* subnet the GS2's traffic should route fine. The fact that the Omnia works fine only confuses me further, as that rules out a straightforward misconfig on the router. The following is a bit of stumbling about in the dark hoping that I'll trip over the problem, so bear with me.
Assuming this is your home router, can you disconnect all wireless devices, reboot the router (to reset all its inteface tables etc) then try connecting only the GS2? Once it's showing as connected, go into the router's browser config and look at "Network Settings" - there should be an entry at the bottom under "Dynamic DHCP Client List" corresponding to your GS2's IP & MAC addresses. "Wireless" under the "Status" tab should also display the GS2 as a connected device.
Also check "Network Filter" under the "Advanced" tab to ensure that the GS2's MAC and or NAME hasn't inadvertantly been added to the "blocked" list. It's unclear from the user manual whether this actually prevents clients connecting or just blocks network traffic, so better safe than sorry for now.

Hi Slug, thank you for your time, unfortunately I have returned the hand set to the supplier and will not be able to try all your advice.
I did however check the router to ensure it was not blocking any devices.
I am waiting to hear from the supplier under the Samsung 30 day handset replacement warranty, hopefully not my stuff up as it was doing the same on the work router.
I have not listed the video public as the SGS2 is a great phone and marvelous technology I suppose the easiest thing to do is kick crap out of something instead of seeing hard work that has gone in to it.
Will let you know how it progresses.

This is ok if you run into this problem while at home with your own router but is a major issue if one runs into this problem at all public wifi places.
I had issues with a router/modem a while back. I could connect to the innternet with my to PCs with both cable and wifi, I could connect to the internet with at least to phones with wifi. However, after several months of use, I was suddendly unable to connect to the internet with my two BD-players with cable. The end of the story was return of the router/modem and get the old to-piece router and modem down from the attick. Works like a charm.
Solution, very simply manually enter all the IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, preferred DNS server and alternate DNS server, and must work perfectly.
One thing I noticed as i had a bad signal which kept dropping is change the channel on the router. If you download and install the wifi analyzer app you can scroll through to a screen which will tell you what channel it thinks is strongest, change to this channel on the router and see how you get on. My connection is rock solid now.

Hi Gurba, router connecting without fail to:
Palm treo pro, IPhone 3, Omnia 7, 2 X Windows 7 lap tops and Play station 3.
So the problem is not with the router that is why this subject is with an android forum not a router forum.
Thanks

Hi ri1030, thank you for your solution.
But this is a pain if you use wifi other than your own, I believe it is a bug with the sgs2.

Hi Marr, thank you but like most solutions it a fix for the home wifi but the problem is that you can not change all the wifi you use to suit the sgs2.
It is the phone that has the problem not all the routers.
For a fix it may work but I do not have access to all the routers I use and it would be a backward step in connectivity if the sgs2 needs to be manually configured, Samsung should just supply a cable

yes I believe too. very frustrated have to turn on and off few time to get connected to wifi.
sometime after leave it for a while it will can't go internet again, even tho it show connected.
if Cyanogen Mod for SGS2 out, i will probably root it.
my phone worked perfectly through my DLINK wifi with ap's, until the moment my phone number carried over to vodafone au??? now its not working tried static ip adress ect. exactly the same as in vid. Had my phone unlocked from vodafone didn't help??????
using win7. configured internet sharing (got no router or usb adapter) my other laptop sees the hotstpot (laptop where the internet is) but SGS2 cannot find it
there is clearly a fault with the phone, i have never had so much trouble with anything. i brought a printer and it just worked!!! as with my TV,BLU-RAY,LAPTOP,PC,iPHONE,NOKIA,Wii,PS3!!! Static wont work either??? tryed putting in ip same as another device and it said not connected, put back on proper settings connected! but wont work!!!! WHOULD MAKE FORE A GREAT SKIPPING STONE IN MY LOCAL LAKE!!!!! Have latest softwere/firmware. Poor effort samsung :-(
rang samsung and i did a factory data reset, working for now! i was informed of softwere issues and hand set needs to be sent to be repaired if reset didn't work.

There is the same problem with SG the old model. I have just bought one with Froyo 2.2 and I can not connect to WiFi. I used Factory data reset and the phone worked for 2 days. But it does not work anymore. I thing Samsung has a problem wityh Wifi not only a model like SG2.
I too had problems connecting to wi-fi on a sky router. It would just not accept my password even though it was correct. I eventually got it to work by entering the password using capital letters instead of lowercase. It could be something as easy as this instead of getting all technical about it.

Thanks for the tip to use dd-wrt firmware. Could not do a thing previously. Could connect to my WLAN but no WAN on my WRT54GL router. After changing the router's firmware from stock, my GS2 connected the first time and I have no problems since. Cheers :-D
Just incase anyone has more issues with wifi not connecting try going to router settings and simply change
the channel, pick a channel between 1 and 11 (assuming your router has these settings) then all should work again

Hi! I am not really good with technology and gadgets. Hence, I couldn't follow your suggestion. Is there a way you could help me out with your suggestion? I tried finding how one does the AES encryption thing on the internet but couldn't find it. Would be great if you could help me out.
I have somehow a same problem. My GS2 can connect to my home router but I can connect to internet VERY DIFFICULTLY. it means it get the error of " can not communicate with server" and may be within 10 trialas i can connect to a website 1 time if i am luck. this is while my signal is full. i've try it in out side with other wifi's and it is ok. also i try a galaxy s at home where it was connevting to any website wery quickly while mine was turning around to find the error. I'm confused what is the source of this pain!
Hi
I am using a wifi without any encryption. But I am not able to connect to the wifi..it says connecting...obtaining ip address... remembered..disabled,Any ideas?

i think S2 have issues regarding adhoc connections. .. same setup with mine. .with OR without password encryption
I was just using my Samsung Galaxy S with Wifi, when out of the blue it stiopped working and shut down on me (The Wifi)
I checked my router which was fine, then tried turning my wi-fi on my phone back on, after 5 seconds a message on my phone came up sayin
'Unable to scan devices'
I tried connecting my phone to the router with the WPS button Connection, but due to the wifi automatically turning it self off, this didnt work.
I have turned my phone off for up to 20 mins and still nothing.
I dont understand why this is happening, and due to work life i need the internet on my phone for e-mails to come through.
My wifi has never done this before and now wont even turn on for a long enough time to scan properly, even though i stand the phone right next to and away from the router.
HI. My encryption is already under AES. I wanted to try changing it to change it back but it does have a drop down arrow like others so there's not way I can change the encryption? What should the authentification be?
I restored my phone to factory default as I just got it yesterday and it connects fine to public wifi and the shop's private wifi. I have no idea why it's only MY HOME wifi that the phone can't even detect. Please help. this is driving me nuts.
HI. I finally got connected and all I did was change my SSID =.= Less technical than going through my whole router setup. Hope my connection stays and hope you guys with problems can finally resolve this. I had this problem for less than 24 hours and I couldn't sleep nor eat.
Switching to another encryption protocol sorted it out
As slug suggested (#5), switching encryption protocol from WEP to WPA2 sorted it out.
Probably the SG2 does not cover properly the more basic security options... (all other phones and computers were using the previous encryption easily and flawlessly. so it points back to samsung. pity but solvable.

WEP is no longer considered secure, so moving to an authentication protocol that offers more secure encryption is actually a good thing.

Just checked router config and it has recognised my phone's mac address is connected, but still can't obtain IP address...
Check that the router is acting as a DHCP server to the network, that its MAC address has been added to the access control list (if using MAC filtering) and that wireless encryption is set to AES.
If all that checks out and the problem persists, try restarting the router to reset its routing table and force it to issue new IP leases to connected devices.
The Galaxy S2 (sometimes known as the Galaxy S II) is the follow up to Samsung's widely successful Galaxy S lineup. This time, the Galaxy S2 raises all the stakes and Samsung has found a way to double almost every spec in a true, one of a kind ... Read More
