I just updated to Lite'ning ROM - which I believe is based on 2.3.4

Phone is way snappier, wifi seems better.

Can't comment on battery life as I only got the phone on Saturday.....

Most of the changes are made at Kernal level and your running KF2 kernal (based on 2.3.3) on the new lite'ning ROM, rather than KG1

And again in English?

Don't know the tech details. I read in the notes that its based on the leaked 2.3.4rom.

Either way, it was easy to do and makes a huge improvement t.

Default Having a problem

I bought my S2 in the US, the original ersatz firmware worked well with prepaid AT&T, except for an occasionally runaway Wi-Fi Sharing process. I decided to try 2.3.4, which has been working superbly on my Nexus One since February.

Okay, followed the instructions, thanks guys, everything smooth. On reboot, everything looks fine, versions are correct. Cellular phone calls work fine, but no cellular data. WiFi is fine, etc. I noticed the default CSC was KOR, so I switched over to XEU. No joy.

I noticed that the APN entry "WAP.CINGULAR" that I selected is greyed out - I cannot edit the entries. The other two APN selections "Phone" and "Broadband" are editable.

Has my SIM been mangled? Should I choose a different CSC? Any ideas?

OK, I have an approach - I'm editing one of the other APN entries to be the same as the wap.cingular APN used to be. Is working for the time being.

Think of a PC....

Kernal = is like the BIOS on your PC
ROM = is like the OS on your PC

(That's explaining it in basic terms mind)

Flashed from DarkyROM2 2.3.4 build (basically stock) to Cognition ROM 1.12 2.3.4 build last night - much better ROM with its custom improvements.

flashed the new firmware, however i'm not sure if i had this originally but when i'm on my homescreens and scrolling there is a tiny hint of lag or dropped frames or something as when it slides over to the next screen there is tiny jutters which stop it from having that smooth transition

anyone else notice this?

other tiny changes i've noticed, pattern lock is different when unlocking now circles are not shaded green, in messaging the create new message icon is larger then it used it be

The very slight lag is a known issue in the 2.3.4 leaked version. There are plus and negative sides to KG1 (You would hope it would all be positives with newer firmwares lol)

i am very happy with kg1 though.
another new thing i noticed is when you plug it in the mtp application doesn't take over the screen anymore which is quite nice

Well, after updating to 2.3.4 using Odin - all my data was wiped off and now cannot connect to Kies - telephone does not appear there.

Few minutes later - nevermind - just had to update drivers on my PC (Win XP) - now it is ok.

I have a question, does 2.3.4 give the ability to press down a volume key to skip a song? Most other android phones have it, including my old blackberry. Or is this solely a Samsung thing?

Please let me know, thank you very much!

First impressions on 2.3.4:

On the good side, the "WiFi Sharing" app seems to be better behaved. No wild CPU usage.

On the very bad side, my GPS is inoperative. With 2.3.3 I could detect and fix on 5 or more satellites in under 10 seconds. With 2.3.4 in the same spot I can barely detect 1, 2 or 3, with no fix. My Nexus One on 2.3.4, running the GPS Status app side by side with the S2, can fix on 5 satellites while the S2 barely detects 2. Anybody else see this problem?

(Edited: I turned off Wi-Fi and Sensor location options, and then turned them on again. All of a sudden, the GPS started to work!)

On the query side: 2.3.4 on the Nexus One turns some of the banner icons green (e.g. WiFi) when that medium is truly connected. Not on the S2.

But it *seems* to me that the battery dies quicker when WiFi is on after the update than it did when WiFi was on before the update. Could they be channelling a bit more juice into the WiFi?

Wi-Fi is def better than 2.3.3, stronger signal, no dropouts.

1. Will flashing via odin remove warranty?

2. Is it the official 2.3.4 update? Do I need to be afraid of bugs? I mean is it a 'beta' thing under development?
Or is this the same thing we will get after waiting for a month or so?

3. Will my old apps installed on 2.3.3 still work on 2.3.4?

1. Yes, though you can flash back to stock and use a USB jig if needed to reset flash count.

2. No, its leaked.

3. Most will, but some users have reported some apps that dont.

k, I flashed it, and is working great. Thanks!
So will I get the warranty back if I flash I9100XWKE7_I9100XXKE4_I9100XEUKD1_HOME via odin? It is the stock 2.3.3 firmware(XWKE7)

This is the download link http://androidadvices.com/downloads/I9100XWKE7_XEUKD1_XXKE4.zip

Assuming you use a USB jig to reset the counter. I havent used one myself though from reading they are dead simple to use, and can be bought off ebay for a few bucks.

I wouldnt worry about warranty anyway

The Galaxy SII looks as though it will be receiving an update to Android 2.3.4. and will bring Google Talk video ( via its rear camera ) and also improved power management which should make for better battery lifetime. At the same time a number of bugs and fixes will be introduced.

I am really liking 2.3.4 Lite'ning rom, much smoother and battery defo seems to last longer since the update, only problem Ive found so far is that Guns n Glory seems to crash out every now and again but from what Ive read this is due to the games compatibility. Oh and Mail would'nt work at first but a simple erase of mail data and re input of credentials sorted that.

Question

Hi guys...

I purchased my GS2 unbranded and sim-free.
I have been able to update the firmware through KIES immediately each and every time an update has been released (don't have to wait for it to be modified and released by my provider).
I am currently on 2.3.3.

If I flashed to 2.3.4 using Odin it would be great to have a better Wi-Fi signal, battery life and percentage battery meter but....

a) If I brick my phone during the update is there any way to recover it?

b) I would obviously back up everything first but would I lose any data/apps/homepage shortcuts or anything else during the update which would need reinstalling afterwards?
Indeed will it leave everything as was?

c) I have read about rooting to remove/freeze provider's commercial apps etc.
As you know my phone is an unbranded, sim-free model so I have no provider's commercial apps on it. Will flashing to the leaked 2.3.4 put any of this rubbish on to my phone (I hate this)?

d) Would I be able to update normally using KIES when 2.3.4 is officially released or will KIES believe I have a released version and not offer me the "update"?

e) Is the officially released 2.3.4 likely to be different to the leaked version?

f) I remember on the GS1 that you could get to a hard reset menu by pressing a combination of buttons at the same time. Some GS1's did not respond to this and mine was one of them. Am I likely to have the same issue with my GS2 getting into Download mode?

g) Does the delayed camera shutter really annoy (you)?

h) Are there any other things you think I ought to know about and if you were me running 2.3.3 on an unbranded, sim-free phone would you flash to 2.3.4?

Many thanks to those of you who give your time to help me

Ive just upgraded to 2.3.4 but am having a problem finding some of the Apps I regular use on Android Market. I understand Google has a confirmation process for new Android versions / ROMs, it could take some time until a device which was updated gets full Market access. Anyone any idea how long this might take?

I know I can get these Apps from Androidpit but I have already paid for them once and dont particularly want to pay twice.

I had the same issue. Specificially, Touchdowns lisence key. Cant be found in the market. I had to puchase it again directly from vendor and use the numerical unlock key.

i just updated to 2.3.4 (KG2, frankenstein version) i got the say, i feel the phone feels noticeably faster.. cant comment on battery life, coz i just installed it. its at 100%, with all my sync stuff and gps/mobile data running all the time, lets see wat i got in 12 hours!

but i did read somewhere, i think on this very thread, that the lock screen lag is gone on 2.3.4. unfortunately im a bit disappointed to see that its pretty much the same. maybe its reduced from 2 seconds to 1-1.5 seconds. but its still a lag. i was pretty excited to think that i was gonna get rid of that. all u guys running KG2, is the lag still there?

oh and google talk video is nice! lol

google chat with video will make it fun....love using it with my Galaxy Tab 10.1 to chat with my kids when I'm away from home...

the 'odin' thing is beyond me....my skills are very basic.... thanks anyway!

Installed 2.3.4. This is the first time ive flashed the phone, a fairly straightforward process (except I had to reinstall all my apps - my fault probably).

This is the first time ive run unofficial firmware and ive noticed its draining the battery in a way I havent had before. Ive checked with Task Manager and there's nothing running (and gps, wifi, data connection etc are off) yet the battery goes down slowly overnight. It's not a massive battery drain, but it is losing power in a way which didnt happen with previous firmwares. Can someone tell me what's happening here.

i hear amazing things about the battery however my first impressions arent great at all. but im waiting til tmr to give it a normal usage test. coz today well, after upgrading and rooting, it was pretty much on all morning, with all bells n whistles n lasted barely 6 hours.
but i did note that much android OS usage was drastically lower: its usually 45% or more. today its been less than 20. looking good.

So has the 2.3.4 update released officially? I read on the net that S2 is being officially launched in US in Aug with the 2.3.4. Maybe the official update for the rest will come at the same time.
