Please follow the below mentioned steps to overcome the issue of not been able to connect to Kies.
1. Remove your data cable from your computer.
2.Goto Settings > Application > Development.
3 . If USB Debugging is not selected , then select it and then again deselect it.
4. Now try to reconnect your device with your computer.
I have tried it as I was facing the similar issue. Now its working fine.
My Galaxy S2 could not be detected on either Windows 7 or Odin.Had upgraded Android 2.3.4 after rooting.
Found the tips below on forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1317916
That finally did the job for me! Many thanks toAshtwinks!
1. When the phone is upgraded to Android 2.3.4 and above (mine is 2.3.6) Kies stops recognizing the phones and USB connection / Serial port connections etc get reset on the phone
2. Even if proper drivers are there on the laptop (mine is Windows 7 64bit) they are not recognized
3. Device Manager shows "unknown device"
4. Updating the driver also does not result in any help
5. solution lies in the phone
a. key in the dialer *#7284#
b. it has 4 option there..
UART (MODEM/PDA)
USB (MODEM/PDA)
c. For USB. select the PDA.if it already selected to PDA. reselect it by select MODEM and then PDA again.. Only change the USB setting.. andthen press back. try reconnect (thanks to napi1 @ androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s2-international/447145-sgs2-kies-not-syncing-os-2-3-5-a.html#post3484588)
6. The Laptop will start recognizing the required drivers and install them
also
Phone is not recognized by laptop when it is in USB debug mode, MyPhoneExplorer does not recognize when it is not in Debug mode
Thank you.
I report that this method also works for Mac (OS X Lion 10.7.3) and Kies 1.3.0 that was NOT connecting my Galaxy Note anymore with the latest firmware update LB1.

After going through all of this thread and having none of the options work for Windows XP.
With regards to Windows XP I found that I had to install the Microsoft User Mode Driver Framework for WinXP to allow the driver to install properly which can be found at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=71641&/umdf.exe
Once I had install this I you need to force the driver to finish updating I did this through Device Manager and selecting Android MTP and selecting update driver.
Instead of looking for complicated troubleshooting solutions, which takes alot of time and most part dont work, and lots of pains in the a**.....DO THIS (eureka, i discovered this because my battery was dieing, and phone went off):
-unplug your device USB cable
-Swith your PHONE off
-Swith your PHONE on
- Plug it back.
Works for me every time kies goes crazy, and also works no matter what windows version you got.

I was having a nightmare connecting my O/H's SGS and my SGS2 to Kies. In the Kies help section I noticed that Kies needs Microsoft Media Player 11. I had deleted my copy, as I was using itunes, so installed it and fully updated it. Rebooted my laptop and now both phones connect to Kies.
Hope this helps.

Hi Guys, Im having the same problems as all of the above on my S2im on O2 in the U.K. Have been trying for hours to get it connected to Kies with no luck, the only message i keep getting is "This Device is not supported by Kies 2.0 Make sure that your device supported and try again". I have tried installing and reinstalling software and drivers, my phone connects to pc no problem using Windows 7 Ultimate x64. I have never updated my phone from 2.3.3 and its the first time ive tried to connect Kies via usb, It connects to Kies air no problem but i have read updates cannot be done via wifi. Is this true and can anyone solve this pain of a problem for me
Cheers for any help
EDIT! Decided to bite the bullet and flash with ics and odin, works great.

Guys, I also had this problem after updating to 2.3.6. I tried all solutions, including reinstalling drivers, uninstalling drivers then setting UDB Debugging mode on and reinstalling drivers, running Kies in Administrator mode, running TwLauncher instead of 3rd party launcher, etc.
In the end, the solution which worked for me was... removing my microSD card.
I keep getting
"Can not start service on device,
Please disconnect and reconnect the device"
Have tried all of the above and then some.
any other ideas?

It worked, great. My galaxy s2 has been fine for the 6 months that i have owned it then suddenly this issue.
Oh, I also had to remove the battery to turn off properly.
I had the same problem when I upgraded Kies. The solution that worked for me on Windows 7 was to switch off phone. Turn on phone again, open Kies and connect phone. I also set the window action for phone to 'No action'. Kies can now recognise the phone again.

YES. Thank you. Now when ICS comes to Sprint, I'll be able to update!

I could not find the problem until I went back to my basic computer skills and realised that the phone was trying to connect to Kies by another means. Simply checking if my phone was doing this corrected the problem. So check if your BLUETOOTH is switched on and simply switch it off. Then reconnect.

I am in no way insinuating that the average user needs to run out and do this, but after 6 months of never being able to connect to Kies via the cable, I was fed up. I had other issues with the phone thinking I was always connected to a cable, and some other things. After finding out that there are a lot of dodgy USB ports with these phones, I realized that all my problems could be linked to this. I bought a port off of ebay and installed it myself, and waalaa!! Every problem solved. I connected to KIES straight away. So all this time I had a crappy USB port.
It was a simple install, and Im glad I did it. It was the only way I was getting Ice Cream Sandwich.
Just troubleshoot your problems very carefully, and I bet some of you can be linked back to this problem. Make sure you search this issue and make sure this could be your problem before you assume this and buy a new port.

Hi all,
I have been pulling my hair out over this issue and HOORAH just got my Galaxy S2 to connect to Kies!
After trying the tips in this thread and other forums I ended up by simply taking out the SD card AND the sim. After powering down of course. Restarted the phone without the SD and SIM cards, started Kies, connected using the usb cable and bingo it recognised the phone!!
I am now currently backing up in preperation to upgrade to ICS.
Hope this is of help to anybody else having this problem.

hi i too having trouble with kies i tried all the suggestions here but what was stopping my phone connecting was my update settings in laptop i changed them to auto update plugged phone back in and thats it phone recognised and drivers loaded, everything updating and transferring now as i type
I read through pages and posts all over the net for two days and had no luck connecting to Kies. And then I read a post by a certain man shaped God, who suggested removing my microSD card. It worked immediately.
Try it.
Since then I can connect fine. Although, still every time I connect to Kies, I still have to switch my phone off and back on before it will connect.
Kies is the worst phone software I've ever used.

Having tried all the above options, turning on and then turning off USB debugging, I have had absolutely no luck connecting to Kies. I live away from home at the mo without lappy or wifi, so I only get a once-every-three-week chance to try to connect. Three weeks ago, I COULD connect, but the ICS upgrade wasn't available.
Now, three weeks later, my phone won't even bloody connect I have little experience of samsung software, but right now it's looking damn useless.
Just about to turn my phone back on then try again......
reboot phone while connected to pc (worked for me)
I did what this guy says and after rebooting the phone(connected to pc via usb and KIES started all time of this process), after the phone rebooted windows 7 installed a new driver (samsung phone modem driver). After this it synced automaticly with KIES. Happy to upgrade this bad boy to ICS !!
Good luck to everyone having problems with their GS2.

If it doesn't work for you, it might be because I enabled USB debugging prior to restarting it. It works in Kies now.
i tried to connect my S2 to KIES while the USB tethering was active. doesnt it get connected in that mode? turned off tether and it gets connected.
I was trying to check out whether there is any update to the ICS already installed. since I have only the mobile 3G to get online, I would like to know whether there is a way of getting connected to KIES with USB tethering turned on. Please advise on this.
Thank you.
I had issues using Kies and windows xp and wanted to share what I had done. Just got my my player in and it's the non-US version (Samsung Galaxy S Wi-Fi 5.0).
I tried what most had said about switching debug on/off, connect disconnecting but nothing worked. I was looking the the setting menu and under USB Management, there was an option under Wireless and Network > USB settings and there are 3 options - Samsung Kies, Media Player, Mass Storage. I picked Samsung Kies and reconnected and it worked.
I realize this might not be an option available since this thread is for the S2, but thought I'd share in case anyone had any luck.
Thanks for the all the advice in this thread, but none of the above worked for me, after spending half a day trying it all.
Got this advice from the horse's mouth (Samsung).... Worked for me. Now I'm back into Kies (for what it's worth);
Hope it helps:-
What probably happened is the USB drivers for mobile phones did not get updated along with Kies after the automatic/prompted update. Please follow the steps below in order to rectify this issue:
- First, ensure Kies is not open and disconnect any connected devices from the PC
- Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs OR Uninstall a Program
- In the list, locate Samsung USB Drivers for Mobile Phones then click uninstall or remove
- When the uninstall is complete, launch Kies This took over an hour for me
- In Kies, click Tools > Troubleshoot Connection Error then click start
- When this process is complete, click Complete
- Turn the device off then back on to refresh the driver data. Alternatively, hold down the HOME key on the phone, tap the button to enter Task Manager, tap the RAM tab, then 'Clear Device Memory'.
- Ensure USB debugging is off on the device via Settings > Applications > Development
- Return the phone to the home screen, ensuring it is 'awake' but idle at the home screen, then reconnect the device.
- Please note that is may take several minutes for Kies to recognise the device - Windows will always recognise the device before Kies does as it has to install additional drivers from device memory.

Have just spent hours trying to get Kies to work. Problem sorted eventually by ticking USB debugging and installing MyPhoneExplorer on WI Fi. Worked perfectly 1st time. Superb. Many thanks
I had the same problem as many others: Samsung Galaxy S2 (ICS) would not connect to Kies via USB (Win 7 x64)
Solution that worked for me:
• Turned off phone. Removed battery, SD card and SIM
• Turned on the phone
• Started Kies on pc
• Connected phone via USB
• => Kies successfully connected to the phone!
• Disconnected USB
• Turned off the phone. Inserted SD card, SIM and battery
• Turned on the phone, connected USB cable
• => Kies successfully connected to the phone!
• Synced memo only - success
• Synced todo only - success
• Synced contacts only - success
• Synced schedule only - success
• All working normally!
Had previously removed SIM card without success. So, not sure which step worked, but it did!
I had also tried installing Kies to Vista (x32). Kies installed ok, but still would not connect to the phone. It appears that Kies actually works, but the phone got into an unknown state.

normally when i search forums for solutions, 99% i would simply search awhile and get my answers from a few trial and errors. but for this solution i would like to express my gratitude as this WORKED LIKE MAGIC. i thought the dialer thing was pretty cool lol but the point is that i've already tried all options including the debug, switching on and off and all basic trials, but Kies still refused to work with my mac. until i dialed *#7284#, (pda was selected by default) selected modem first, pressed back, then dialed again, and selected back to pda, my galaxy w was connected in a heartbeat.
FOR ALL MAC USERS HAVING PROBLEMS WITH KIES AND THEIR GALAXY, THIS IS THE BOMB. thank you
I too like many of you have had the same problem with my S2 not connecting with kies and ive tried everything that everyone has suggested on this thread from enabling usb debugging mode, to enabling usb debugging mode and disenabling it right after, tried taking both sim and usb out, tried installing windows media player 11, tried the #7284# dial tone procedure (when i dial the number it simply says "connection problem or invalid MMI code"), tried simply turning phone on and off.
however i tried the one method of going into setting>wireless & network> usb utilities and putting it in usb mass storage mode and the drivers run (the little popup that hardware wizard has found your device) but then it prompts me with a message saying
"Reconnect device in Samsung kies (Pc Studio) mode. current connection mode not supported by kies. Check usb setting-> applications-> development-> usb debugging (x))"
i will follow exactly in these instructions and usually the drivers connect just as before but i get the exact same message prompt even though I just did it....it confuses the hell out of me and i dont know what to do! im about to throw my phone out the window! can some please help me with this ive practically tried all of the previous methods and nothing has worked!
I have tried everything and nothing has really worked. I contacted samsung and followed their advice. My phone can now occasionally connect to kies but it still will not back any data up, so i dont even dare try an upgrade. It seems to lose connection to the phone. Have contacted samsung again for further support. very frustrating!!
This is for the S2 under Gingerbread, so not sure if its the same. Try going into settings/wireless & network/USB utilities.
Tap on the icon, then connect the USB cable. What this does is to connect the phone to the PC like a thumbdrive (USB mass storage), and then you can browse and do what ever you need through the PC.
Ok, so samsung have got back in touch with me again, and to be fair they are trying to resolve the issue. However they have asked me to run KIES logger which is available on KIES version 2.3, but the latest version on the samsung website is 2.0. anyone know where 2.3 is available?
I have had problems for months to connect and after speaking to samsung who were no help at all i finally figured it out.
SIMPLY DOWNGRADE YOUR KIES (PC) TO 2.0 it will connect first.
Hi guys I have a samsung s2 and have been trying to connect it to my computer (windows xp) for a few weeks now and it keeps coming up with usb device not recognized.
I have installed kies
I have even updates Kies
I have tried switching the debugging on and off
I have tried dialing *#7284# and switching it from PDA to Modem back to PDA
I have tried taking my sim and sd card out
I have tried switching it off and then on again
I have tried installer a driver booster
I have tried going through wureless and network > usb utilities and connecting it that way
I have tried cleaining the usb connection on the phone and the cable
and i know it connects because I have managed to do it before but for some reason now nothing seems to work, is there any other ideas out there please for me to be able to connect my phone to the pc with a cable so i can keep up to date with the updates?
thanks
