Notsure USB port

I actually just got the Galaxy SII today through AT&T. It was refurbished. I've always had great luck with AT&T's refurbished phones, but not this one.

The phone will not even charge! It attempts to charge for half a second then the screen blinks and it goes blank. A few seconds later the battery charging screen pops back up for another half second then goes off again.

I do believe it is an issue with hardware. However, I don't believe it is design. My original Galaxy S has the exact same port, albeit on the top instead of the bottom. It works fine with the new charger. However, if anyone recalled, the original Galaxy S had a hardware issue on launch where it would randomly power down. Mine still has that issue. Perhaps Samsung just wants to torture us with more power issues in its younger brother?

I will be sending back the phone to AT&T tomorrow. At this point I'm really not sure whether to try another GSII or not. I'm just really disappointed in Samsung lately.

I have the same issue. I got the SII at its introduction and it was fine until a couple of weeks ago.

Brought it in to the store to get it repaired. The sent it in and as I feared they only did a factory set like I hadn't thought of trying that myself...

I'm going to try and get my carrier to replace the phone, and I'll never get a Samsung again.

Default How to get it fixed

It was thanks to the forum that I knew exactly what to go and say and ask for. There was a certain amount of denial mode initially until I pushed it a little and referred them to the Internet forums like this one, then the issue was acknowledged.

Fix for me was they replaced my actual USB Port and the internal connections that they said had coroded. The engineer admitted it was a common problem and any little bit of dirt, fluff, moisture could cause it. Good Luck.
I have the European version of the phone. Living in the US, I called samsung, and they said that they do not service non US phones. I badly need it repaired, don't care about warranty anymore...anyone know if there are any labs that would be ready to repair it?

OK guys, I just found out that you can buy the whole USB PCB for 7$ at ebay, I'll go ahead with that and update. there are some you tube videos that show how to replace it, nothing more than opening some screws - I''ll try and update.

I'm having all the problems mentioned in the original post on my SGS2 but when it is switching in and out of driving mode my phone is unable to make any sound apart from the annoying beep it usually makes when you connect it to a USB port. I started having these issues only a couple of days ago and now my S2 might beep as often as every 5 seconds for half an hour or so

Sawbones,

I have exactly the same problem as you do. Have you been able to discover solution or all we can do is claim the warranty?

I'm starting to have problems too. In the battery stats it's constantly being shown as charging, when it's not plugged in. This increases my battery drain also.

Have tried cleaning with a toothbrush, but no luck.

100% Reliable phone? From where? Didn't know Apple could make those.... Anyone using HTC? Works all the time?

The only reliable phone (that is a phone), is my old nokia 3310. Never spoils, never reboots, never complains when I drop it. Can't do much else except calls and message, but it does it well. Mr Reliability there.

But I still won't give up my SGS2.

So if you have constructive advice, you are welcome.....

Yes, please--let's try to keep things positive and constructive.

If you have a specific issue you'd like to discuss, that's cool, but a general, negative statement isn't productive or helpful.

Thanks for your understanding and cooperation.

I also had this mix of problems with my S2 (U.K version, unlocked from new). Sent it off to my contract provider who I got the phone and sim deal off, they sent it back saying it was an out of warranty repair issue which I would have to pay for. I wasn't happy but it's soon to be older than the standard warranty anyway so I looked into doing it myself.

Managed to buy the USB assy from a company in the U.S and fitted it this morning.. first thing I noticed is that the phone actually stayed off when I put the battery in, instead of the usual cell icon and temp warning coming on. It also powers off now rather than just reboot. All looking ok at the moment and I'm hoping the MTP init issue and all the other randomness will cease now.

I did notice the board version of the replacement PCB had ver 2.3 written on it whereas the original was ver 2.2.

It's a shame Samsung aren't acknowledging a possible batch issue with this.

1. with your phone going into car mode randomly
2. always having speaker phone activated
3. randomly connecting to kies when it's not plugged in
4. randomly saying it's charging when it's not plugged in
5. freezing, getting really hot, then loosing about 25% charge

then you have a problem with your mini usb port. It is NOT a software problem. I've seen this happen to 3 sg2's including my own. I have been able to fix all of them by cleaning the port with rubbing alcohol. 2 of them unfortunately relapsed. I have no idea why or how this problem is so prevalent but it appears to be affecting A LOT of people. What can be done about this? It seems like it is faulty hardware and not an issue with people just being careless with the port. I hope this clears up some confusion that people have.

I have had the same problems as listed above. I thought it was a software problem also but since I removed my USB memory card my phone has done none of the following. I will be returning my phone to my nearest Vodafone shop and getting them to have it repaired.
Thanks for the thread Bloodyfinger

Seems like an issue with your memory card and not the phone.

Remove the card, backup the contents on your PC and do an error checking of the card and have automatically fix errors selected.

See if that helps solve the problem.

Thanks for the thread Bloodyfinger
I had all the same problems and like you got rid of them by removing my memory card. I've also error checked it and it's come up fine. I've since put it back in and the problems haven't returned (that was about a month ago), I'm sure they might eventually but if all I have to do is take the memory card out and put it in again I'm not going to bother returning the phone. I wonder if maybe it's just certain brands or sizes of memory cards that cause this problem?

This has started happening to me too. My phone keeps turning the screen on by itself and turning on car mode. The screen turning itself on is affecting battery life badly..it's probably happening in my pocket too.

It seems to happen when I take it into the bathroom when I have a bath and the condensation gets to it, going to stop doing that and see if it helps.

Default Problem Solved!

After the problems indicated before and after ICS update and then complete failure to charge or dock via usb i was about to send away my phone for repair. Found this thread and used the tip of a pocket knife to scrape of the contacts and bend the nub away from the edge of the inside of the usb port a bit and problem solved fully. My theory is that ICS is not to blame for this hardware problem but may be more sensitive to voltage irregularity than Gingerbread.

I have had similar problems to those mentioned and the below

battery still charging when it's not (not even plugged in)
battery voltage too high. charging paused (not even plugged in)
but they start to happen from when it has been plugged in.
never used any other charger than the original.

also my battery magically drops about 25%+ the moment you turn phone off and back on

Same problems as original post on my 3 month old Samsung Galaxy S2 and I also have these issues

Phone will randomly switch itself on when I switch it off...

Phone goes randomly into car mode and will not come out without reboot...

When phone is idle it randomly lights up and when I swipe the screen away there is nothing to suggest why it lit up...

Phone sometimes gets really hot and beeps like a charger is plugged in and needs reboot...

Phone deactivates wi-fi by itself randomly...

I cleaned the usb port with a toothbrush this morning and the phone was fine for about 8 hours, now it is beginning to act odd again - car mode is coming on and the speak function randomly activates eating up a lot of battery power.
Baffling how Samsung would dare to release something as flawed as this (especially for the price they charge) - maybe the 's' in 's2' stands for sh*t!

Sorry to hear about your problem...

Have you updated the firmware recently? If there are clashes with the old firmware, all sort of problems can occur. The only fool proof method I know of is to wipe cache and factory reset the phone.

The USB port is also not the best. Try cleaning it with a toothbrush and make sure its not bent or anything.

And if its only 3 months, take the opportunity to send it back under warranty if the problems are not resolved.

Thanks for the reply mate

I did clean the usb port with 2 toothbrushes (a slightly damp one and then a dry one afterwards) and it did work for around 8 hours before the phone started acting up again.

Last night (after posting here) I removed the battery and then with a very thin blade I ever so slightly lifted the thin piece of metal (inside the usb port) away from the bottom of the port and then replaced the battery and it seems to be working up to now (it is 15:22 as I type this and the phone has been fince since 0600 this morning).

You know, I did not have any of these issues with gingerbread, they only started about a week after I upgraded (via kies) to ice cream sandwich - coincidence?

Thumbs up Many thanks

Just an update

I contacted my network provider (three) and asked them if I was likely to get the phone repaired under the warrantee if they think it is water damaged - they said hypothetically if they think it is water damaged in any way at all then no it wouldn't be repaired and I would have to pay a 19 admin fee. Furthermore I would be without my phone for a minimum of 5 days.

I ordered this spare usb part from ebay and fitted it myself. The part arrived within 2 days and it took me around 20 mins to fit it (I was being ultra careful)

I followed the following youtube video here

All of my issues are now gone. The phone works perfectly - and all for a fiver...

I want to thank everyone in this thread because after reading about your problems and solutions I became convinced to atempt to repair the phone by myself - many thanks, hopefully I won't be back with any more problems

AH TI*S!

So is this odd behaviour definitely the usb port? I left my phone on a table outdoors for a few hours at night, and when i went to fetch it it had condensation on the screen. Not too much mind.

Anyway, using the MHL cable to stream TV and it kept cutting off every few minutes (was very random) the next day. Never happened before. Wondering if i screwed up the usb now due to the moisture. It did behave oddly while charging just once before leaving it outside (was 'charging' even though disconnected) and one isolated 'voltage too high' months ago but that's it.

Will keep an eye and if it keeps happening will send for repair. If anyone knows a decent repair place in the UK please post!

Had this start from last night - everything other than going into speakerphone. Though been losing charge suddenly for the past week or so. Was beginning to panic til I found this thread and just done a cleaning of the port and ensured none of the parts inside the port were touching and - touch wood - it's started up ok, but now seems to be doing odd things like going onto a screen I've never seen before when I come out of the Gallery. Very odd. I shall be treating it carefully today and have a chat with my mobile provider tomorrow...!

Thanks for all your posts, a great help :-)

I too have the same problems. S2 bought in May. Problems started November 2012. Mine starts from powered down on its own while not on the charger or on the charger. Sometimes starts from powered down when charger is connected and if it is powered down again it restarts immediately. Sometimes I get the proper green-battery symbol. Flicks between offering speech input. Battery went pancake-flat for no discernible reason.

Also, I can't update it since the 'software update' option in my 'settings - about this phone' menu is disabled (not available), if I try via Kies, it hangs. I can't count how many times I have reset it, de-installed and installed Kies. It still has the very first firmware version.

And, in addition, 9 out of 10 times, people cannot hear me when I call them.

So yeah... I think I am done with this Monday Morning Monster and will go to the shop and see what they say.

Thanks bloodyfinger for bringing up the issue. There are multiple other forums where numerous people are complaining about the same issues. I do not want to clean the port my self because I may be damaging it more. I have doubts whether Samsung support center will repair it for free, the support centers in India are notorious for their non-cooperation.
