ajh94 used to be indecisive... now he's not so sure!
The SGSII will come with Gingerbread and, if things follow their normal course, the custom ROM's will be out first (within weeks) for ICS followed, some time later (months), for the regional, unbranded handsets and finally for the operator branded handsets (3-6 months (if at all)).

For something of the magnitude of Gingerbread to ICS, I would expect it to be done via Kies (Samsung PC Suite) for official releases. For the custom ROM's it will be done either via Odin or CWM.

I upgraded from a desire and I haven't regretted my decision for a second even with the announcement of the galaxy nexus...seriously you won't regret buying it, but why not go and have a play with it just to be sure?
I dithered over it just like you, but if I'd played with it it would've made my decision very easy!

Only you can answer any of these questions mate... there's no guarantee there will even be an S3 and, if there is, that you will actually want it (might be much better phones out by then).
Plus nobody can tell you which price plan to get
Play with an S2 and a Nexus, decide which you prefer, pick a price plan that suits... BOOM. done.
