Default No phone signal, but 2 bars are showing

For the past hour or so I have had no phone signal. My phone displays 2 bars in the graph, but there is no G/3/H next to it.

In the battery usage screen the phone signal section has been red for about a sixth of the time that it shows.

I sent a text & made a call ok around an hour ago, but have tried to text since, but with no luck (obviously).

I'm on o2 in the UK & yesterday flashed my rom using Odin to the 2.3.5 version. o2's network problems show that my area is working well. I've also switched to airplane mode, then back but no luck.

Any ideas as to what could be wrong/ how to resolve?

Would I still be able to get tech support from o2 if I have flashed the rom?

hmm.. well the G/3/H not being around could simply mean ur out of range for 3G services, but seeing that u cant even make a call, i'd say its a bigger problem, yeah.. which firmware did u flash, KI8? maybe u could try another modem, im not sure though..

u could try getting tech support over the phone i guess but u cant use warranty services after u've flashed firmware via Odin, u'll first have to flash back ur original firmware, then reset ur flash counter (with a usb jig, available on ebay)

I've got the KI3 firmware.

The G is for GPRS, which I thought wasn't a 3G service anyway? However, I know that I'm in a 3G area as I'm at work and get good 3G coverage.

Could the problem come from me having wifi turned on all the time?

I managed to fix the problem with the good old restart - but would prefer to have an answer to the problem than having to power cycle whenever it happens.

well, when ur phone loses 3G signal, it automatically goes down to EDGE or GPRS, depending on which signal is strongest

well, if ur wifi is on all the time, and ur connected to a wifi network, then ur 3G will definitely not connect.. it only connects when ur not connected to wifi

Thanks, but you're missing the point.

My phone receives no mobile phone signal, whether it's 3G or 2G. I understand that when using wifi that the data comes from my broadband & not the mobile phone network.

My problem is that for a period of over an hour (before a power cycle) my phone couldnt receive a call/ sms - even though there were at least 2 bars of coverage shown. I was at work, so I know I have a valid signal.

I questioned the wifi because I wondered if having this on for the past week, did it upset something in the phone & stop the mobile signal from being received?

Sorry if any of this sounds rude, but I just wanted to state a bit more clearly what/ where the problem is.

hmm, firstly i just clarified why u sometimes see G, even though ur on a 3G network not as a solution.

have u tried popping the sim into another phone? if its the same on that, then u can leave the phone alone and contact ur service provider. if its working fine on the other phone, its probably something that went wrong when u flashed the new firmware, probably with the modem. u could try another 2.3.5 version, i.e. if u flashed KI3, u can flash KI8, or vice versa.. or go back to 2.3.4 (KG5, KH3 were very stable)

and no, having ur wifi on is how this phone is expected to work, it shouldnt affect ur mobile network in any way

i don't have a fix for this but the same thing happens to me when ive been using the wifi all day at the office at work. i get the same symptoms with no signal + it showing 3 or 4 bars signal lit up.

Orange UK has a signal boost app to get the UMA service via wifi and when i leave at night it often cant get a real phone signal back until i power cycle.

this only seems to happen to the phone after using wifi then trying to resume a normal signal

The G comes up when it access's the GPRS signal. In the UK there isn't total 3G coverage, so sometimes it needs to switch between 2G & 3G.

I'll try the sim card in another phone.

Thanks

That sounds exactly the same as me. I prefer to have wifi on all the time, so not to use my data, but having to power cycle is a pain
