Default Why Long Sms are getting converted in to MMS !

Hi Guys,

Is there any such thing that when you are typing a text message which you are trying and wanting to send it as an SmS if it exceeds certain character limits, number it auotmatically gets converted in to an MMS (Multi-Media Message) which I dont want. If I am trying to send a text message a SmS, I want all my SmS to remain as SmS and not get converted in to MMS right now what is happening is beyond a ceratin limit my Long Text Messages are getting converted in to MMS which I dont want... How do I stop this from happening ??

Thanks.

dont think you can with the stock message app unless you root and install a mod for it.

you can if you use handcent though as your messaging app. theres an option in settings to not convert to mms if messages exceeds 3 sms

Message setting just says Text Message limit, which I think suggests how many messages you can set per onversation. I dont think there is anything in settings which can allow me to set maximum letters in a SMS.

So what is it that you are suggesting ? where do I change it ?

You can't change it in the stock app - that's what Skimminstones said.

Any message you compose that has 480 characters or more will be converted into an MMS. This is a restriction on SMS technology, I think?, due to the amount of data involved.

In fact the limit is 160 characters per text but latest technology allows you to string 3 x 160 blocks together as one message, then it's up to the receiving device to put the 3 blocks together as they were composed.

So either break up your messages into 480 character messages, carry on composing and send as MMS, or send an email instead.

Messages > Menu > Settings > Creation mode. And select Restricted.

Edit:

If this doesn't work then just look out for the little warning message when composing.

I previously had a Nokia N900 and it would never convert no matter how long is your text even if it is like a email. Too sad can't do this.

I think that's true. I remember doing something like 5 messages once. Of course it might have been changed to MMS without you noticing it. No warning ever came up like in SGS2. Regardless, why do you write such long sms?

Hi,
Also annoyed about the auto convert from "free" to "charged" messages and I'd like to switch it off. Either allow more messages to be concatenated or just stop allowing entry at the end of the third message. Simples.

In reply to anyone who thinks that more than three SMS cannot be done due to some limit in the protocol, my daughter just got a new (white) SGS2 on Orange (same as me) and she sent me a 4 x SMS message today...(screengrab)...but when I try it the "0/3" changes to "1KB" and the "converting" popup appears.

Her phone is evidence that it can be done. She's on 2.3.4, I just went from 2.3.3 to 2.3.5 and I still can't get to the 4th SMS.
Must be a "deep"/hidden config setting of some kind. I guess the carriers just want the money.

Download and install Handcent > settings > send message settings > uncheck auto convert
and away you go.
In the stock app settings uncheck notifications and that will allow only hancent notification in the task bar

Thumbs up GO SMS Pro

On stock application it is not possible. Use "GoSMSPro". I'm using it on my SGS2 and you can send more than 3 text messages as sms. It wont convert it to an mms. Plus it is free, with lot of customizations and without any ads.

Disable notifications in the standard messaging app (the "stock" one) if using third-party apps so as not to receive duplicate notifications.

Handecent will switch off the stock notification for you.

Start Handcent.
Menu - settings
Application Settings
Default Messaging Application
Select "All (SMS & MMS)"

Then, to stop it converting to sms make sure as others have said, go into :
menu - setting
send message settings
Untick "Auto converto to MMS"

Not what the OP asked. That multimedia message limit does not prevent changing of SMS into MMS.

All SMS on any phone has a limit. An N900 (great phone still) sends any size SMS, but check your bill you'll find a l ong text will use more than one standard text. It is the way some phones handle SMS that is different.

I have been sending huge sms's to my girl friend and never had a problem before,& i have not acctivated mms service and using it costs more and sms are nearly free. But i installed handcent and my cell bacame too laggy & slow so i removed it and since then i am seeing this new thing that my sms's are being converted into mms, though i can't send it as i dont have it activated.
That means stock messaging which comes with android can send huge msgs more than three,i just checked it and i have even sent 7 sms's.This problem i faced in handcent but there was an option to not to convert to mms after 3 sms but its a huge app and a pain in the neck as the cell becomes impossible,i used that for one week.
Now the issue is how to reset it,can not see in the settings anywhere.
And someone asked why we neeed to send big sms's,sorry you should not be saying that way.Sometimes you cant meet and want to speak your heart out or clear things etc,we love writing we are good at it and maybe we are emotional ppl.you too must be doing lot of things, playing games, too much work, love, obsessed with something....so try to understand bro others are not stupid....we cant afford too much and sms is nearly free.

Hi Guys! Maybe new versions don't allow for big sms's,i am saying this coz i hve older version LG P500, 2.2.1 and i can send 10 sms's before it is converted into mms.But then its ok coz my earlier featured cell would also not allow more than 10 msgs. Its a problem in newer models but thats not done, not right at all.Such a basic thing if a user can not do then what is the use.You have to write to the official people, but dont install big apps like handcent, chomp or Go sms coz they will make your phone very slow. But you can try if you want but they are risky in other ways also.I heard they pick wrong contacts but i faced one thing that my girl friend was receivng one extra line for the few msgs which i wasn't writing lol.I want peace..

Question Christmas!

Whow! All these messages posted on December 24 and 25, and not even ONE mention of Christmas (wishing each other a happy one at the beginning or end of your posting) from any of you? How did that happen?

And I'm even surprised that time is being spent in here on those days, instead of being reserved for exciting celebration with family ansd/or a friends! That is...unless you were preparing to give this phone to someone on Christmas and was just test-driving it to make sure it would work easily, or if you already had the phone and were planning on having a Christmas SMS-based chat with someone by it (although it seems like just a call would be better at least on those days). Hmm...!

I have the same sms conversion to mms problem..
I know there is a fix/tweak for rooted phones (i remember when i was on Darky's Rom it allowed longer text messages more than 3pages without conversion)

Can someone upload link or direct me to the tweak/fix

Default had the same problem with my Galaxy Note (unlocked)

I ran into the same problem and researched but couldn't find a single good solution, mostly workarounds. Here is what I did on my Galaxy Note SHV-E150s (unlocked international version):
1) Go to Message -> Settings
2) SMS Input Mode -> Choose Automatic instead of Unicode. (I had selected unicode before and it counted 1 character as 2, as well as a space)

After changing the SMS input mode, it count one character by 1. If i go over 80 characters, it's automatically changed to MMS. Although i am still having problem sending MMS over my phone using tmobile service (i am having unlimited sms and mms).

According to here, the dash in the phone number is the problem I managed to remove all the dashes from the contacts. But still having problem: http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-1979

Good Luck!

This Same thing Happens on My Samsung Galaxy S Aviator with US CELLULAR... Except after the first 160 Charactors... It gets CONVERTED TO MMS and then starts counting the KB's instead of the charactor count!!! Is this a US CELLULAR THING? Do They Not Support Multiple Pages anymore?

It is always a service provider design to convert to mms (always with stock app)..
Use custom roms (like me) my messaging app has hack in the software code which allows infinite characters (and yes no "auto conversion")
service providers charge many users for mms (money making policy) those who have unlimited have restriction amount of data being sent (meaning number of characters)..
If you don't want to root, then handcent messaging app.(look in market or google it)

Recently i got my wife the international unlocked version of SGS3 and she has been complaining that after the 3rd SMS it converts to MMS.

I am using the unlocked Intl version of HTC One X and the phone allows me to stack up to 5 SMS then on the 6th one it converts to MMS.

After reading all your comments above and with my personal experience between SGS3 and One X, i believe the service providers have no say in this, i think you should point your fingers at Samsung because this could be a restriction they applied on their customized Android OS "Touchwiz".

The SGS3 is using Android Version 4.0.4 and my One X 4.0.3, I don't think may cause any issue.

Just now i checked with two other friends, one has S3 the other One X, same scenario.

Hope this helps

just a suggestion..root the phone and then you can apply SMS MOD (it modified the SMS software (in any phone any model) allowing unlimited sms texting without conversion to mms, no restrictions..

Sorry for bumping..

But I have the same problem on my S2. Auto-converting sms to mms after 3 sms'. It's friggin' annoying.
My old n95 with (dont keel me for saying this but..) symbian, would auto-convert on the 11th sms.

So why is there such a restriction? And where can I get this socalled root sms mod? Bloody annoying sending a semi-long sms and the reciever never gets it, cuz this restriction causing the message to not being sent.

So can anyone pm me how to root the sms mod thingy? Would be highly appreciated!

Happy easter, christmas and newyear. Just for you, the one guys who complained about it

Just for you, the one guys who complained about it
Like I said in my previous posts if you're using stock sms app (service provider want to make some money, as some customers get charged for mms..I know I do)..
So in order to help you can you tell me if you are using stock sms or third party app.??
Is your phone rooted (you mentioned it like you don't even have a clue what root is).?
Google search learn to root phone (plenty of easy tutorials out there)
What do you mean root the sms (you root the phone) and having done that (install sms mod file from recovery)..
If you don't have the time enthusiasm to learn about root, then don't bother (chuck your android phone away..android totally customizable)

TRY using "go sms" or "handscent"..see if that helps & if it's an easier method..

What custom mod file do you have.? (should most likely be a zip file, which then is easily installed from recovery)
Can you give links to the where you got the file.?
