Default No notifications on wifi

Hey all. I recently got wifi in my room, and I love it! But, Im noticing Im not getting push notifications from many apps like Google plus messenger and others while on wifi. As soon as I turn wifi off, my phone goes crazy with all sorts of notifications! Why is this?? How can I get notifications to push while on wifi? Very frustrating because the networks are slow here in the UK for data...

Notifications come through okay for me when using wifi, which is much of the time at the moment. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Now emails are not pushing very well on wifi. This is really annoying as the mobile networks in Britain are crap so Id rather stay on wifi where possible

I take it from your OP that you're in a student residence (or similar)? It could be that the router firewall is rejecting the incoming packets due to security settings. A solution will require the help of whoever manages the network, though.

I agree with the above post. On my work wifi, often push notifications won't come through due to the firewall. If i go into the app, the notifcations come through. On my home wifi I have no such issue. This happens on my current phone and my past phone.

Also disagree with UK networks being "crap", though I live in London and it's likely a lot better here than outside.

I wouldn't say mobile network's are crap in Britain, i'm in Peterborough and i get brilliant reception.

It's all relevant. Generally speaking UK data throughput lags a long way behind that available on US networks, which is what the OP is comparing.

Yes, I do live in Durham, which is a poor data network. I can talk just fine, and it only drops calls occasionally. In the US we can use skype over the network without any issues, just to compare the quality of the data networks. Anyways, that isn't why I was posting. haha.

I do live on campus at Durham University, so maybe you are on to something about the firewall here at school. Im guessing you are right there, so I will see if I cant find a personal wifi connection of a friend just to try.

The issue you are describing I experience as well (exactely the same). Funny thing, I used to be able to receive push notifications until some time ago, but now I'm no longer able to, while at home everything works fine! I asked our network man at work if something had changed in the settings recently, but that's not the case... Does it have anything to do with android 4? Is there a solution yet for this issue?

Default Possible Solution

I was just battling this issue. I found that I was able to receive push notifications while on WiFi after I unblocked port 5228.

This is copied from a McAfee website:

NOTE: Apple and Google reserve the right to change the IP range of each address, which can result in these IP ranges changing frequently and/or without warning. Therefore McAfee does not specify the IP ranges of these addresses, and recommends that only the Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) is used for all outgoing ports. If you decide to use specific IP addresses instead of FQDNs for these addresses you are doing so at your own risk, and the functionality and stability of your EMM environment cannot be guaranteed.

Port Description
2195
Apple Push Notification: Outbound from the Server that hosts the EMM Push Notifier Component to: gateway.push.apple.com

2196
Apple Feedback Service: Outbound from the Server that hosts the EMM Push Notifier Component to: feedback.push.apple.com

443 Android C2DM - Outbound from the Server that hosts the EMM Push Notifier Component to: android.apis.google.com and google.com

LDAP service: from EMM Hub to LDAP server (internal network) for authentication

IMPORTANT: The following ports should be opened when devices are connected to the Internet through a corporate WiFi router that is behind a company firewall. For those devices to reach the Apple/Google Push Notification and C2DM servers, these ports must also be allowed outbound on the firewall.
