Default Activating WiFi disconnects the 'phone

Hello; I've just got a Galaxy S2 and think it's a great 'phone. But I have a puzzle. Whenever I activate the WiFi connection it de-activates the phone connection. It comes back fine if I de-activate the WiFi. This is kind-of-OK as I can toggle between them but isn't what I expected, and isn't how any other phone I've had has behaved.

Is this by design, or have I not spotted a setting I should change? Or might the 'phone be faulty?

Thanks.

With wifi on, no 3G usually. But phone line for calls and sms should work as usual. If it doesn't then there is a problem.
