Default Battery drains in 6 hours

Hi,

Another battery thread but here goes...

I've never had decent battery life since I've had the phone but it's even worse since installing 4.0.3

I'd take a screen capture but since installing the update I can't. Yes, I've tried pressing the Home button + Power button, yes I've tried pressing Volume Down + Power... both do not work.

Main apps installed:
1. Airpush detector
2. Bloomberg
3. Chrome
4. Compass
5. CPU Spy
6. Dropbox; not signed in.
7. Gmail; signed in.
+ Sync is ONLY set to sync email, not calendar/contacts/chrome/photos/internet/picasa
8. Google Play Store
9. Google+; not signed in.
10. IM
11. Instagram; signed in.
12. Lightbox
13. Maps
14. Tetris
* I also have an ActiveSync account added that syncs mail/contacts/calendars and is set to Push mail.

The battery was left charging overnight, taken off charge at around (100% battery) 6.30 AM, it's now 2.00 PM and.. as I write this the battery status is:

24% - Discharging
5h 16m 45s on battery

Android OS: 37%
Screen: 31%
Android core apps: 9%
Voice calls: 7%
Exchange Services: 5%
Android system: 4%
Cell standby: 4%
Phone idle: 2%

Other stuff:
WiFi is off, Bluetooth is off, GPS is off, Auto rotation is off. Display Brightness is set to 'Automatic brightness'

CPU Spy:
Time in state:
1200 MHz | 0:01:48 | 12%
1000 MHz | 0:00:16 | 1%
800 MHz | 0:01:58 | 13%
500 MHz | 0:01:43 | 11%
200 MHz | 0:08:09 | 54%
Deep Sleep | 00:01:08 | 7%

Total State Time: 0:15:06

Kernel info:
Linux version 3.0.15-19100XWLP7-CL340913 (dpi@DELL134) (gcc version 4.4.3 (GCC) ) #3 SMP PREEMPT Tue Apr 3 20:01:08 KST 2012

Now I'm finished writing this it's at 22% with nothing really running.

Either the battery is no good or I'm missing something.. any help would be great.

Thanks

Also, I have calibrated the battery by draining the battery completely, removing the battery, charging to 100% while the phone is off, etc..

Hello and welcome to Android Forums craig187!

I'm guessing that you have recently upgraded to ICS from the helpful information that you have given.

The reason I mention this is that sometimes a rogue application or badly updated or unsuitable setting can cause the symptoms you describe. For more details on this and what you can do, see, "ICS problems... what you can do!".

Looking at what you are running, nothing leaps ot as being too wasteful, (Facebook and Latitude are prime culprits), although you are obviously using it constantly, judging by the lack of Deep Sleep. On an un-Rooted phone with very heavy usage, I would expect the sort of drain you are getting. With medium usage I would expect around 12 hours. These figures almost double for rooted handsets as you have more control over what built-in app's are running, such as Wi-Fi Manager and Sharing.

There are a number of things you can do to improve battery life after you have tried the above. This thread lists both Rooted and un-Rooted battery saving tips for the SGSII, "Battery Saving Tips... rooted SGSII", and could prove useful.

Hi ironass,

I'm actually not using it a lot, a few days ago I had the phone charged to 83% and left it off charge overnight. No apps running.
When I woke up the next day (7hrs or so later...) the phone was off, battery dead.
I feel there must be a memory leak or CPU leak or something going on because it's very very unusual.

I'm going to try all the tips you suggest and see how it goes.

Thanks

Dunno if this will help, but here goes.
Firstly check you have a signal - if the phone is constantly searching for a network it will kill your battery.
Secondly, try a battery monitor widget. These will let you see the actual drain in ma your phone is drawing. I had an HTC Desire that was constantly pulling 150ma with the screen off and killing the battery in around 7 hours. After just over a week it fixed itself - I suspect it had got damp in my pocket. BTW - my Desire also drained the battery when it was turned OFF, which pointed to a hardware issue rather than a software problem.

Please see my post yesterday:

Kernel battery issues

I think the problem is the version of Kernel you have.

Install gsam battery monitor app and after a few hours take a look at what is using your battery, on mine Kernel is over 82%

I have not idea how to change the version of kernel im using.

Any ideas?

An update:
I wiped the phone as suggested here: http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s2-international/556408-ics-problems-what-you-can-do.html

I haven't installed any apps as yet, the only thing I've done is re-added my ActiveSync account (required for work)

Charged battery to full last night, this morning it was 91%, so I'm pretty happy with that.

My guess is there was an app that was consuming all the battery as the phone would not idle - even when it should have been idle.

I'll install apps one by one and see how it goes.

Thanks.

Congratulations craig187! At least you now know that it was not a corrupt ICS firmware update. You did the right thing by running it for awhile with virtually no app's.

That's the way forward. Installing the app's, one-by-one and re-doing the settings as you go.

Good luck mate!

No problems old boy!

Just glad that I could be of help and that you are now on the road to being sorted out.

Now all I have to do is convince all the others who are facing problems after the ICS upgrade that it isn't the ICS firmware at fault but bad downloads, non compliant app's or bad settings!
