Default message notification question

Is it possible to have a notification in the bar when you receive a message but not have the message scroll across the top of the screen? I can turn that off but then get no audio alert. I want sound, some kind of alert in notification bar but not the actual message scrolling.

It's possible on the 4.1.2 jb leak but not on previous versions. You would need to use a 3rd party app (eg. Handcent) for this on gb/ics
