I had the same problem but now I have install an app (LTE switch) where I go into my setting and I choose which Network to go on, LTE when in the City and I switch back to 4G when I am out, the switch just makes it easier.

I had the same problem but if you go into your Phone Network setting choose 4G Network instead of automatic, this way it will not bounce from two different towers. On 4G you still get amazing speed but when back in the city switch back to the other one. The service people didn't know how to help me but after playing around a bit, this trick fix everything for me. Use an LTE switcher to make the switch even faster. Good Luck!

Where are you located? I've talked to about 10 different people so far and none of them will admit that they have ever heard of our problem. I am from jersey. When I called today the message on the system said they are experiancing heavy call traffic in the northeast region. Geeeeze, I wonder why.

Att said i can return the phone and my contract will be voided and i will still be eligible to upgrade to another device when I find one I like. If its not fixed by saturday morning I an returning my vivid. Who knows, if the phone/network gets fixed in the future I may get the vivid again. But i feel the need to protect myself from being stuck with a bum device for the next 18 months. I've waited so long for a new phone. Over 2 years. This all hurts so bad.

I haven't experienced any issues, but my concern is when I travel. Am I gonna end up with a phone that doesn't work?

^^^ try to get further up the chain... get to the tech center .. and then theres a step higher where they open up with a whole case number and whatnot...

Ive got a direct number to this so called higher level that works with the engineering department ... 1-877-996-7017. The pin code i have is 88777. This should be enough to get you to a live person. they will then ask for your claim number which i guess you dont have now.... lol, i probably shouldnt be publicly throwing all this info out, but until i have a working phone its all out war with AT&T. my claim number is "cm20111111 underscore 30878189" if they give you any crap about not hearing of any of this before refrence that case number... theres a list of notations in it about my problems.

Ok this is the best answer I received from a Tier 2 tech before I asked to speak to a manager- "What you need to do is bring the device back, because you have a 30-day buyer remorse, and get a device that doesnt have LTE". WHAT thats the answer I get from a tier 2 tech on why my data isn't working??? I'm sure that their corporate office would love to hear about that. Oh we cant fix it so just get one that isn't LTE capable and that should allow you to have data again.

I then spoke to the manager who said he will note on my account to replace my phone with a NEW device- I told him straight up I don't want a refurb because I bought this new- He was even in shock that the Tech told me to get a different phone-

When I get back from AT&T tomorrow I will let you all know if I have data again!

Friends,
After I got the Skyrocket (that was NOT Rocketing on the AT&T Network) last Sunday, making me do 3 device returns, MANY useless calls to AT&T support, here is what I did (based on searching XDA developers forums)...
My main issues were:
1. Intermittent web site access
2. Browser hangs, connection to data server not found sort of errors and
3. NO tethering (I signed up the tethering plan)

Apparently the APN (Access Point Names) that comes with the phone is for LTE only. I am in NJ and no LTE at this time. So based on my Samsung Infuse settings (where web access and tethering works FINE) I created a new APN (can name anything you want)
Settings > wireless and network > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names
Name: ATT WAP
APN: wap.cingular
proxy: wireless.cingular.com
Port: 80
user name: Not set
password: Not set
server: Not set
MMSC:
http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMSS Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMS port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Authentication Type: None (didn't change it)
APNY type: mms,supl
Not sure if this is the best/most optimum APN setting but after creating this APN, rebooted the Skyrocket and IT IS WORKING reliably:
1. All web sites I went to that were hanging earlier now load fine and reasonable quick
2. Speed is not the top notch... getting approx. 4mb/2mb
3. Tetheting WORKS and all web sites load fine on my laptop

Net net, until LTE is switched on in my area, I am going to stick with this APN. I was so frustrated after changing phones, SIM cards, resets...Finally, I have a Skyrocket that is not rocketing as far as internet speed is concerned BUT it gets to all web sites I want to reliably, reasonable fast and most important to me, I can Tether.

Hope this helps! I'll be curious if folks in non-LTE areas like me will have same experience if you create a new APN like mine. Good luck...it is frustrating like hell when bulk of AT&T support (including MANY Tier 2 support) are clueless and we end up going in circles...
Regards

^^^ so is there a special way to turn on this apn setting though? It would seem that my original apn on the phone is locked on with the little green circle on it. Cant seem to switch to the other apn, or do I not have to, it just has to be there?

Unless i am doing something wrong or have missed a parameter or something (ive never messed with this setting before) this is not working for me.

You have to create a New APN. Go to
Settings > wireless and network > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names
Press Menu Key and Add/create a New APN with settings above if you want to try and see if it works for you.

I did all of this an created the new apn, but the original apn seems to have a little lock icon on it and it seems even with the new apn I can not switch off of the original and onto the new one. The little green circle stays on the original. Maybe I'm just dumb.

Hmmm...
When I created the new APN and went back to the APN list, its displayed both APNs and I was able to select the new APN (selected the Radio button, turned green) and then rebootd the phone. It stays green for the new APN when I check it. May be check with Tier II AT&T Tech support?

I was having this problem too. When I picked up the phone at launch they had to swap sims and rescan the phone multiple times for it to get a data connection. I'm not in a LTE area. The issue I get is mostly with the "speed test" app. It will either not find a server or take forever to ping. If I switch to wifi it works perfectly. My webpages load pretty well for the most part. Netflix is super slow. Seems like anything that requires alot of data is slow. I tried the other APN settings in this thread and they work, but are slow.

I found the APN settings for HSPA+ which yields faster speeds.

Create a new APN by going to the menu and selecting the option of new APN.
Now you have an empty APN, that doesn’t even have a name. Name it as AT&T HSPA+
All the remaining fields in the newly created APN are as yet empty, except for name. It will remain so, except one change. Tap the APN and enter “phone” (without the quotes).
With that done, you don’t have to type anything else. Leave ALL the fields empty.
Choose “Internet only” as your APN type, and then save.
To apply the fix to MMS settings, create a new APN as done in step 2 and name it MMS.
Again enter “phone” repeating step 4.
In the case of MMS, the fields aren’t going to be left blank. Following settings should be applied. Go to MMSC and fill:
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMS Port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Switch off your phone, turn it back on and you are ready to experience lightening fast data speeds.

Anyone know if there is a fix for the APN for LTE? (I live in an LTE area, and I keep getting spotty connections....It'll work for a brief period after cycling on/off or Airplane Mode cycled on/off).

Either the vivid is different or I really am stupid. It let's me create the new apn but it doesn't let me select it. Whatever. I give up. I'm back on my iPhone 3G now cause at least it works.

Maybe it's a sign from god that I should wait for the GNex to come to att

I followed sharmhw instructions and all is working fine with the new APN. The speed is much slower though. Only getting 3mbps down with newly created APN. The stock APN (pta) yields 5-12 mbps.

Garyp609, Glad to hear that it is working.
I agree that my Skyrocket is not exactly 'SkyRocketing' on the internet! it is just consistent in web sites I go to and Tethering works.
IMHO, we collectively should keep pressure on AT&T tech support to provide correct settings/resolution for LTE and non-LTE users. The supposedly LTE APN (pta) is blank when I looked at the settings and web access is intermittent. So either AT&T should provides details on how to fix it or send an OTA update. I was tired of 'Do a hard reset' advice from pretty much all tech support folks.

So, i got A TEXT MESSAGE! from ATT today saying that my investigation was finished. When i called in they told me that there were no issues on AT&T's side and that i should choose a different device if I am unhappy. HAHAHA..... trying now to figure out how I can afford a Verizon phone and bill.

GUYS, AT&T IS STILL TELLING ME THAT I AM THE ONLY ONE IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD WITH THIS PROBLEM. THEY HAVE NO OTHER REPORTS OF IT!!!!!

I urge you all to get on the phones now and attack them with the information I have given you earlier. Call 1-877-996-7017 , enter pin# 88777 .... DEMAND TO HAVE A CASE OPENED, REFEREANCE MY CASE NUMBER, AND HAVE IT ATTACHED TO YOURS! .... If you all dont do this you will suffer with this problem forever. Again my case number is "cm20111111 underscore 30878189"

Good luck!

Default Survey WHat are your g4 (not LTE) upload and download speeds/location

I am in Jupiter Florida (WEST PALM BEACH AREA) My 4g (not lte) upload is about .22 to .26 AND MY DOWNLOAD IS ABOUT 2.2 ......... my ping is 177ms to 213

MY WIFI IS (comcast) download 17.0- 17.3 upload 4.102-4.119 download......... ping 44ms to 46 ms

ATT level 2 says... within expected ranges in my area, no network problems......... BUT why not bring phone back and exchange for another phone and or for another make and model..

USING SPEEDTEST...

what are others experiencing????

YMMV

This is plain Garbage/ignorant AT&T tech support who mostly tell you to:
1. remove battery/re-boot device
2. do a reset/hard reset
3. change device
4. change tethering plan to regular data plan
5. change SIM cards
In plain (hidden words) their message is: hope you don't come back or we don't know what we are doing...I went to one store in NJ and the mgr told me (after saying they have 4 Skyrockets in stock and I was there in less than 10 min) that they sold them all. I went to next corp store 5 miles and they said why did you come here, the 1st one could have done it, they still have 4 devices in stock, I asked them to call 1st store and the sweet lady said 'yep they got 4 in hand'... net net, I personally having gone thru the experience, do not buy 99% of the crap they tell you in store/on the phone. Occasionally we get lucky running into someone who knows enough to help out.
...'don't we feel like doing a Digital 'Occupy Wireless Carrier' via Twitter/facebook/emails... to collectively demonstrate the 'Consumer Power'...lol... Just see the agony Samsung Galaxy Nexus fans are going thru with verizon...they are same crooks! no one if afraid of spoending money for the right device/service but they treat customers like 'doing us a favor'...sorry, I know this does not solve your problem. Will call the number you gave. Even though I solved my issue for now, I am NOT happy with the speed!

92hatchattack, just to keep you posted... I just called AT&T number you posted and yelled at them! (professionally of course). Opening a new case and will chase their tail on this even if it goes nowhere. I also told the AT&T rep that your case should NOT be closed as MANY of us are having similar issues and AT&T MUST listen and FIX this crap! will keep you posted here.

Further... I have now gotten my phone to be able to select these new made APN... and low and behold, every webpage i try loads correctly!

But speeds are still slow and now what i should be getting. In the small instances that my phone did work on PTA i was getting 4000-5000 down here where i live, and almost 10k down at my job... now i am getting between 1000-1500.... but its working at least. I am going to call and see if they can do anything with this info.

Update....

So i just talked to the most helpful person of the experiance who actually wanted to help me. Aprently there is a seperate "data" department that for some reason i have not heard about for the past 5 days. We went though all the normal BS.... I am a little confused as at one point she treid putting me back onto the hspa+ only data plan. She told me that the AT&T HSPA+ APN that amill has listed a few posts above should have been on the phone from the factory and she cant understand why its not. She tried a whole bunch of stuff to see if the phone would factory reset and pull up that proper APN automoticly when switched to the non LTE plan, but all results were the same as if i was on the LTE plan. In all cases we had to manually enter the hspa+ APN.

My sppeds are fluctuating at the moment. Im getting between 1500 and 3000 down and 1500 up on the AT&T HSPA+ APN that i entered manualy......

But, the question that couldnt be answered... what happens when LTE goes live here? Will this APN pull that signal? Do I have to go back to the PTA to get LTE signal, and if so what happens when i exit the LTE area? Will it auto switch to hspa, or will I have to manually change the APN back to the HSPA+ setting......

This all now is sounding like a case of this new fancy automatic switching radio and APN's that are not written properly and setup for this automatic switching..... I hope this info can help someone out.

SOOOOO,,,, right now the AT&T HSPA+ apn setting listed by amill seem to work best. It nails every web page, just not at the 5000-9000kbps that I was expecting to see from hspa+

There is a 2 party fault on this right now. ATT and the manufactures have to fix this up together I am thinking.

Still not sure if i will keep the device. I may return it to protect myself in case there is no propper fix. If one comes in the future i couls always purchase it again.... but i must protect myself from being stuck with a bum device.

^^^ do it , it works.... but the problem is, I think its only a patch for us. I dont think this is the final answer we need.

Guys, since my case was closed the lady I talked to could not re open it up to add our findings. Try out this apn stuff and go open your cases with them. Tell them your findings. Make them look for a solution.

Being that My data is at the moment working, I cant do much more with them. I wont know the true nature of things until LTE goes live in my area. Only them will I know how this patch reacts, and honestly, to protect me from benig screwed i probably wont have the phone that long.

Ok so I punched in amills apn and boom like most others have experienced web pages work fantastic only question I have is I did the seperate mms apn but I can't send mms texts just curious how to do it do I have to switch to that apn then shut the phone down and restart to send it, oh also I did speed tests with amills apn and I'm pulling between 5-8 mbs so mine seems to be fast

IM so tired of this Saga already. If any of you have any juice left I guess contacting the manufacturer and getting them involved with ATT would be the best thing to do at this point.... as for me.. I give up .. i need a rest or my head will explode.

Folks, based on my read of the XDA-developers forum, I created 'One' APN that has everything in it (post #61) that allows me (not the fastest speed but works) web access and everything else including tethering. may be try adding one (combined) APN instead of two. This is NOT a long term solution. I have no idea how well auto switching will work when AT&T lights up NY area on LTE. For now it does what I need. My 2 cents! In the meanwhile we also go yell at Samsung and AT&T.

Also got this in email from AT&T Tech support:
Troubleshooting Steps

SUBJECT:
PDP and APN Types

SYMPTOM:Unable to Connect to the Internet

ADVISORY:IMPORTANT: As of 09/19/2010, all newly activated LaptopConnect rate plans will be provisioned with the "Broadband" APN. Please use the "Broadband" APN in the Access Point Name when creating a new connection profile.

FIX:

Overview

AT&T uses APNs to provide customers with specific data services based on the definition of the APN as defined within the provisioned data rate plan. Each APN enables access to the Internet; however, that access and associated billing may be different from APN to APN. Review the table below to understand what each APN is designed for and when it should be used. When troubleshooting a connection to the Internet, be it on a handset, Smartphone or PC card, the APN plays a key role. APN definitions and appropriate usage scenarios:
Access Point Name (APN) Details and usage Username/Password
"wap.cingular" or "Phone"
  • Provisioned for use with 2G, 3G and 4G handsets and Smartphones.
  • Does not allow tethering (using phone as a modem) of a handset or Smartphone for Internet access on a computer.
  • Provides a dynamic IP address.
  • Exclusively used by handsets and Smartphones for Good Mobile Messaging, Exchange ActiveSync, Device Based E-mail, and Device Based Internet Browsing of both WAP (MEdia Net) and HTML.
  • Username and password are no longer required for the these APNs.
"isp.cingular" or "Broadband"
IMPORTANT: As of 09/19/2010 all newly activated LaptopConnect rate plans will be provisioned with the "Broadband" APN. Please use the "Broadband" APN in the Access Point Name when creating a new connection profile.
  • Allows Internet access on a laptop using a PC card.
  • Allows tethering (using phone as a modem) of a handset for Internet access on a computer.
  • Provides a dynamic IP address.
  • When used by handsets, this APN would be configured by the Communication Manager desktop application, the APN should not be configured in the handset device settings.
  • The "broadband" APN provides access to 2G, 3G and 4G speeds on compatible devices.
  • The "isp.cingular" APN provides access to 2G and 3G speeds on compatible devices.
  • Exclusively used by PC Cards and handsets to access the Internet on a computer. This APN must NOT be used for Good Mobile Messaging, Exchange ActiveSync, Device Based E-mail, and Device Based Internet Browsing of both WAP (MEdia Net) and HTML -- errors will result and the service(s) will not work correctly.
  • Username and password are no longer required for these APNs.
blackberry.net
  • Provisioned for use with a RIM BlackBerry device and service.
  • The username/password combination for this APN is automatically set by a service book during activation.

Commercial Connectivity Services (CCS)
and Telemetry
APN Varies
  • Used for specific mobile setups such as enterprise customers who use remote applications like Telemetry or CCS. For instance, vehicle tracking in which a driver doesn't have to initiate a location update.
  • Offers a high level of security and availability for enterprise users.
  • Provides a dynamic OR static, public IP address dependant on the setup.
  • The username/password combination for this APN is customized based on the enterprise needs.
  • The actual APN name as well as its associated username and password are all case-sensitive.

In addition to calling tech support, we all need to post directly to Atts forums and you can hit up samsung's galaxy support twitter account. If they start seeing volume then maybe it will get them to act quicker. Btw, when I call Att they say I am the only one with this issue, but the Samsung tech support rep said they are aware of the issue. Either these companies are incompetent or they are keeping this quiet until they finish up their testing to validate the problem exists.

Angry

Having the same issue in Denver. Got my fiance and I both Skyrockets, and both phones lose data connectivity constantly. Service returns if you power the phone off then back on, or turning the connectivity off and on. Typically it only lasts for about 10 minutes or so.

Wifi works fine. AT&T had no clue. Suggested I return it for a different phone. Tried explaining, this is the phone i want, and have been waiting on. Pretty frustrating. Not sure what to do at this point. No other android device I want at the moment, and I really don't wanna go with an iPhone.

Hopefully Samsung is aware, and provides a fix very soon.

Oh how I wish that were true...
I'm in the DC area of LTE coverage, and my Skyrocket definitely still hangs loading certain websites. Changing the APN does seem to help at the moment, but I haven't tried it in an area of full LTE coverage yet.

This issue is getting really old though....

Anyone think we could get our local newspapers to turn up the heat on AT&T?

Has anyone that is in a LTE marker played around with their APN yet? Right now i dont have LTE in my area, so to get any sort of connection I had to change my APN to the AT&T HSPA+/phone, which is working flawlessly and im getting betweeb 3000 and 8500 down.

What am wondering though, is with this APN will i be able to pick up and LTE signal on it, or will I have to manually switch to the other APN if I want to use LTE???

If anyone could test this out I would greatly apreciate it!

I've only gotten 7 mbps on my device. I've noticed on the speednet app that if I slide the slider (under tools) all the way to better performance I get a better speed download.

Default Fastest LTE speed?

I live around the DFW area in Texas.

I have always had good coverage with 3G and HSPA+

I just got my skyrocket last week and im enjoying it

Anyways I was out this morning and noticed my phone was INCREDIBLY fast online. So I ran a speed test.

Keep in mind this was at 7am so little to no traffic on the network
