Default Notifications and Ringtones.

2 questions...I'm new to android...

1) Is there a way to set different text tones for different people or would I need to 'root' to do that?

2)How can I keep notifications and ringtones out of my music player?

From what I have seen that can only change the "ringtone" not the "text tone". I do not think there is a way to set a text tone for a specific person when using the stock messaging app. There may be a way to do it if you download a messaging app from the Play Store.

1 - I have not seen this option on 2 of the messaging apps I've tried(if you find one let us know cause I'm interested)

2 - Download Zedge from the app store, it's free and allows you to download ringtone/messaging tones and holds them in a sperate folder.

Handscent messaging app allows you to attach any type of ringtone or message tone to seperate individuals as well as ID pics and custom backgrounds...I have custom message tones for the contacts that I message frequently, so I always know who is texting me before I even look at my phone.

I will agree...Zedge is awesome for ringtones and message tones, thats where i get a majority of mine, or I just make them.

can't help you with the music player question, but i think i can with your ringtone question.i think i have figured this out...

i have the skyrocket

for those not being able to assign unique alerts to the sms and email messages- the gmail app that is outside of the social hub app does not give an option to assign a ringtone, so it will piggy backing on the tone you choose for sms. however the one in the social hub does have that option. i am using both the stock email app and the same gmail account. i assigned them both the same tone. you then just go into the sms setting and choose a different setting. i just tested and i now have different alerts for sms and emails.

it seems that if you want to change the settings on the gmail or the sms, you want to work with the settings in the social hub app. but to be on the safe side i set the ringtone for my handcent sms in the social hub and on the home screen.

i hope this helps.

As mentioned by others a replacement text app (Handcent) has settings for this or you can try Ringo Lite.
