Default SMS restore onto a new phone causing problems.

Hello I just purchased a Samsung Galaxy s2 skyrocket and tried using multiple apps to backup sms from my Captivate and restore them onto my Skyrocket. Every time I restore the messages, it makes my phone very unstable and it goes unresponsive often and does not even allow me to open the messaging app. I have even tried using alternative apps such as handcent. Sms are important to me and I would hate to lose them but would this problem be caused by having a large amount of messages? (I have about 22000)

Also, I can't find anything online about someone with a similar problem, is it just the skyrocket in general who can't restore that many messages? Or would any android phone have the same results? Thanks a lot.
