Default my android gmail is possessed!!!! help

Some thing has gone very wrong. My Gmail being pushed to my phone is possessed. Sometimes its all good I get the 20 or 30 emails in my inbox plus new mail then i can put them wherever and whenever. But then I will get a new mail notification and 500 + emails load some were archieved months ago, all to present day! HELP!
