*Edit* Febuary 2013, There is a newer ICS stock rom released Janury 2013. Read this guide
Method 2 (my preferred method) Use Odin to install the update. You do not need to be rooted to do this. If you are rooted, you will have to reroot. This is also the easiest method if you are still running Gingerbread or a custom rom.
This is for the T-Mobile Galaxy S2 SGH-T989 phone ONLY.
Make sure on your phone USB Debugging is checked in Settings > Developer Options
Make a folder on your PC to put these files. You will need a program like Winrar to extract files.
Odin 1.85 - Make a sub folder and extract Odin in it.
download this file. It is the updated stock ICS 4.0.4 rom. The same as you get through Kies. Extract it in your folder. (Thanks to KRZ-2pa at XDA)
You should already have Samsung USB drivers on your PC. If you don't, download and install Kies. It comes with the latest drivers. Close Kies before you start Odin.
1 - Launch Odin by double clicking the Odin3 v1.85 file. Plug your USB cable to your computer but not your phone.
2 - Power off your phone. Then hold down both volume buttons and plug the USB cable into your phone. Press the volume up button when you see this menu.
You will then go to the download screen.
3 - Wait for the Com port in Odin to turn yellow as in the pic. You do not need to check anything that isn't already. Just be sure that Re-Partition is NOT checked. It shouldn't be.
4 - Select PDA in Odin and browse to the stock 4.0.4 file you downloaded and extracted. Select it. Now press Start and Odin will flash the stock rom. When it is finished you will see a green PASS in the top section.
5 - Odin should reboot your phone. You should now have the latest ICS on your phone.
Immediately after rebooting, you should do a factory reset in settings > backup and reset, or using the method below.
If you have any problems booting up, or after booting, go to recovery. Power off your phone. Hold both volume buttons and the power button at the same time. When the phone vibrates, let go of the power button but keep holding both volume buttons. In a few seconds you should be in the recovery menu. Use volume buttons to move up/down and power button to select. *if power button doesn't work, use your home key*. Go to wipe data/factory reset and select it. Next, select format cache partition. Now select reboot and you should boot normally.
Hey Atmazzz have you put the update on your phone and is it performing well?
Yes, and I'm not sure yet.
This morning I updated with the painfully slow Kies. Then I wiped my phone and installed with Odin to be sure it worked ok. I rerooted and had to leave for work right after that. I haven't had a lot of time to play with it but I haven't had any problems so far.
I upgraded through Kies. Really not much difference that I noticed. Maybe i just don't know what to expect. If anyone knows of anything different that I could look for, let me know please.

Hi Caker. I haven't seen a lot of difference either. I know the update removes universal search. I assume that's due to the Apple lawsuit.
It also adds the ISIS capability but I haven't read up on it very much.

Well I have seen much difference for one ICS actually works for a change. I had so much misery with 4.0.3. Things force closing stuff lagging like no one's business and having to reboot my phone like crazy. Battery life use to be flat out horrible in 4.0.3 but now the interface is smooth some of the more demanding games do not lagg. Lunching of apps does not take 15 minutes. Yep and battery life is much much better I am at 1 day and it is at 50 percent down.
I personally really like it and will wait for the custom jelly bean becoming nice and stable before I update.

I agree with this sentiment wholeheartedly but I think I will be waiting until the SOD's and random restarts are ironed out so that everything is stable to enjoy that buttery goodness!!!
So am I reading you right?
I can go straight from 2.3.6 to 4.0.4 using this method?
Yes. Didn't you go from 2.3.6 to 4.0.3? Its the same way.
I just went straight from a Jelly Bean rom to 2.3.6. I had a boot loop but just had to go to recovery and do a factory reset. Then I went straight to 4.0.4.
Now I'm going back to Jelly Bean.
The Following User Says Thank You to Atma For This Useful Post:
Yeah but I went back to Gingerbread shortly thereafter. Wasn't too impressed with ICS.
But more people are saying the bugs seem to be being worked out so I'll try it now.
Thank you
I DID IT!!!!!!!!!!! haha im going to get some ice cream now to celebrate!
Tell me if you don't agree this 4.0.4 runs so much smoother and better than 4.0.3. Only one fc in about 12 hours of steady use.
And speaking of 12 hr's, my battery has lasted that long for the first time ever.
Just a quick question, is it ok if i flash this using odin straight over a telus 4.0.3 stock ROM on the telus T989D? I know they are the same phone but I just want to make sure before i do as I do not want to softbrick my device.
Thanks!

Hi Ibuprofan and welcome to the forums.
It would probably work, but, I think you're phone would show as a T-Mobile Galaxy S2 instead of a Telus. If there was an update for the Telus in the future via Kies, you probably wouldn't be able to get it unless you went back to the stock Telus rom. I don't really know what other effect it would have, so flash at your own risk.

Yep agree with you soon much better after all the update to ICS was supposed to fix the ball that was dropped with 4.0.3. Anyway my battery life goes past 24 hours on a stock rom so I am excited!
I dont care about it saying tmobile as it is unlocked and running in the US on AT&T. I am just having some issues with stock 4.0.3 and the stock ics radio that came with the telus update. I figured i would flash this via odin and try out the stock tmobile rom and radio and see if it works better.
I’ve been using this for the past 24hrs. It’s much smoother then 4.0.3 and the battery life is noticeably better. Looks like a winner. Of course I’ll still be looking into other roms as I love to play with this phone lol.
Did they remove Adobe Flash Player in this update? I'm asking, because after updating I can no longer find it in the Play Store and Flash related content doesn't work.
Update: Never mind, I see why that's the case now. Adobe no longer offers Flash since August 15 for Android, unless you had it installed prior to that.

I'm having issues with the Jedi Mind Trick ROM. After my phone has booted, it sometimes get stuck looking at the SD card and there's no cell phone signal. When I try to reboot, it freezes. Then I remove the battery, boot up and everything is fine again. Kinda odd that this ROM was running fine for several days and then starts doing this - twice within the past two days. Thinking about trying the stock 4.0.4. Can I go directly to it from my current ROM? Jedi Mind Trick is 4.0.3 with T989UVLE1. But the new stock ROM gets rid of flash and the universal search, so I'm thinking about going back to Darkside until there's a stable Jelly Bean. Decisions, decisions.
I am rooted using a method from YouTube I was told about. I'm still on 4.0.3. I am at 7 h 3 mins with 70 percent battery life left. My phone sometimes locks up requiring a restart. Is it worth my while to kies the update? Will my phone lock again? I paid telus to unlock.

Hi Steve. This update isn't specifically for the Telus. Its for the SGH-T989. So I doubt you can get it from Kies.
If you are having to restart your phone, it may pay to do a factory reset first. That can fix a lot of problems.
I'm not really familiar with unlocked phones, but I think that has more to do with the sim than the OS you are using. However, if you used this update for the T-Mobile phone on your Telus, I just don't know how it might affect the unlocking.
Much appreciated. I used TWRP and cleared the caches. Booted up just fine this morning. Hopefully no more issues. If I end up having to clear the cache about every week, I'll try the new stock ROM.

does any one know if in this update did they change the radio or so? I thought i had 3 to 4 bars all the time before this 4.0.4 update .. now its 2 bars or so
I haven't flashed it yet but I assume the radio has been updated. Most of the time when the Rom base changes as it did in this case, a new radio will be included to match. Did you check in About Phone for your Baseband version?
i keep getting fail at the end...not it stuck in screen with exclamation point...pulled battery and change usb cable...keep failing? any answer? thanks

Try rebooting you computer and see if that helps. Or even another computer if you have one.
I am new to the samsung galaxy s ii and i was excited when i saw that i could upgrade to the ics in some way. I attempted to last night on the t mobile t989 on kies. However, nothing ever popped up and kies told me no updates were availabe. Now im wondering how i can just go straight to the 4.0.4 someway from gb 2.3.6. Also is this update worth it? or would it be safer to stick with the gb?

Hi xcoletrain Welcome to the forums!
You can use this Odin guide to install ICS 4.0.4. I, personally, think it is worth it. Were you using Kies on your computer?
I would also like to add that i just bought the phone about 2 days ago from walmart. I noticed in another thread that other people who also bought the phone earlier than me had it preloaded with 4.0.4. Why was mine left behind?
Version 2.3.6 gb
Baseband T989UVKL1
I already checked this stuff. Just wondering if ill be able to download 4.0.4 from odin i guess since kies did not work

Yes, you can use Odin.
I was wondering why Kies wasn't working is the reason I was asking about your version. The version you have is not even the latest version of Gingerbread. The latest was T989UVLDE. It was also sent as an OTA update. Have you tried going to about phone and select software update?
Its hard to believe it wasn't already updated when Walmart got it. I would be tempted to return it and get another one.
So what do you think i should do my friend? Go back to walmart or just do the update myself?
Its really your decision, but if it was me and I just bought it 2 days ago, I think I would try to return it and get another. With firmware on it that old it makes me wary where its been. You should just be able to put your sim in a new one and off you go.
If Walmart asks, just tell them the Operating System is 3 updates behind while everyone else is getting the latest one on their phone.
I have a warranty replacement phone from Samsung directly. It came preloaded with ICS 4.0.4
Although there is plenty of free ram, it is still super laggy as compared to Gingerbread. I will be downgrading. I lost hope for Samsung.

You could try a factory reset first. Or try a different launcher like Apex.
Just wanted to say I took the phone back got it replaced. I believe the one they sold me may have been defective or even returned. The new one i exchanged for was brand new. Running on 4.0.4 now with no problems. Thanks for the help

That's great!
Yeah, I'm like you. I think the other one you had must have been refurbished or something. Enjoy your new one.

Super laggy? Impossible unless your underclocking. Jk. But really. Do you use your task manager and control your open/running apps?
