Default Galaxy S2 O/S update - confused

Let me begin by saying I have searched and read the threads in this forum for the last couple of hours hoping to find an answer to my questions. It was not a waste of time as I've learned so much during that time that I didn't know I needed to know...and for that I thank you all!

I have owned the Samsung Galaxy S2 now for 4 days from T-Mobile. It did an update two days ago and I am currently on Android Version 2.3.6.

I have installed Kies on my PC and went through all of the instructions. It currently tells me I have an update available:

From: PDA:LDE / PHONE:LDE / CSC:LDE (TMB)
To: PDA:LH1 / PHONE:LH1 / CSC:LHI (TMB)

Can someone tell me where this will put me in the big scope of things? I hear version numbers and version names and now the info above.

My understanding of this is:

Ice Cream - 4.#.#
Honeycomb - 3.#.#
Gingerbread - 2.#.#

I guess the bottom line question is: Where will this update through Kies put me as far as versions go?

Which is the better approach...updating through Kies or waiting for T-mobile to push the updates?

Any insight would be most appreciated!

FYI - my daughter got her S2 two weeks ago and it came with Ice Cream.

Hi AlmostAGeek Welcome to the forums!

T989UVKID = version 2.3.5 Gingerbread
T989UVKL1 = version 2.3.6 Gingerbread
T989UVLDE = version 2.3.6 Gingerbread update
T989UVLE1 = version 4.0.3 ICS
T989UVLH1 = version 4.0.4 ICS

So you would be going from the last Gingerbread 2.3.6 update to the latest version of ICS.

The ICS updates are not available OTA (Over The Air - Pushed) and as far as I know, will only be available through Kies.

Glad to have you here. Enjoy your new phone!

Thank you Atmazz - that actually clears it up quite nicely

I have begun the upgrade through Kies and get the following message (as well as 7 others that are pretty benign):

The device has been modified with a customized software may cause upgrade failure, unstable mobile phone operation, and/or other problems.

Should this be a concern???????

Again, a big thank you for clearing up the versions confusion!!

I'm really not sure. I don't recall getting a message like that. I don't understand what customized software it could be talking about since its a new phone and said you could upgrade.

After upgrading, if you have any problems, it is usually a good idea to do a factory reset. That will normally clear everything up.
