Navigate in messaging threads

I have a large number of messages in a certain thread...is there any way to navigate in a thread? Like jumping to a specific message? Also I thought there was a way to automatically return to the top of the thread but I can't figure it out. Please help!

Only way that I can think of is press the search button. That can help you find specific messages, possibly the first one, if you know what it said
