Someone or something changed the name associated with my Google account. Now all of a sudden my phone cannot log into the Google apps store.

When I try it prompts me for a password for a specified username. It tells me the password for the given username is incorrect, but that is because the username no longer exists.

I see no place to change the username, so I am wondering how I do this, or work around this?

Have you tried going to Settings > Accounts and Sync, and removing your google account and trying again?

Also going to www.play.google.com and attempting to log in and resetting your password once it fails. There should be a link that says "Can't access your account?"

I did as you suggest (account and sync).

I tried to remove the account but it says: "The account is required by some applications. You can only remove it by reseting the phone to factory defaults (which deletes all your pesonal data). You do that in the Settings application, under privacy."

So changing the name would be optimal, as setting to default would be UBER annoying for obvious reasons...

As for your second suggestion... it seems that it does not prompt me to change the name...

You have to click the blue link under the log-in form that says "Can't access your account?" and then it will let you choose the option that says "I forgot my username"

Maybe I should clarify, I'm trying to change the name when I'm using the google play APP on my phone. The store on the web (using my PC) provides such a link; however, the app on my phone provides no such link.

Yes, but by resetting your username through the website you could fix your log-in issues on the app. It uses the same username/password to authenticate.

I figured it out (but the way that solves my original question)... what a pain in the ass...

Apparently, when google started forcing people to log into their google account to sync with YouTube the username got switched to the email address of some OTHER account. How that happened I don't know... So some STUPID reason it was very difficult to change it back... After clicking around and around I finally managed to do it.

Unfortunately, I can't even remember the steps I took to achieve this for other people to solve the problem (should they stumble upon this thread). Nonetheless I thank you all for your help.
