Are you running gingerbread (2.3.6), ICS (4.0.4)or Jellybean(4.1)? In ICS it's under menu>settings in the networking area select more. There should be a checkbox to enable NFC

I thought the update from AT&T came as an over the air (OTA) installation. I never did it as I was rooted running ICS long before the official version was released.

If I remember correctly, If you are not rooted and running stock, the option to enable NFC was removed, even though the chip is in the phone. You will have to install a custom rom to enable NFC, but it doesn't work in many cases, which is probably why Samsung/AT&T decided to disable the setting.

The update for the GSII was never OTA. You have to connect your phone to your PC and run the Samsung Kies software. The update comes to your PC and then you update your phone via your PC.

You're not going to get it through Straight Talk.
Straight Talk and TracFone have never issued software updates to any phone they've offered on their service and they've intentionally prevented this phone from connecting to Kies by not inluding the Kies service in this phone's firmware.
Your only option is to return it and get a different phone or root the phone (possible) and then install a custom ROM (not possible).
At the moment, it's not possible to install a custom recovery image on this phone, nor is there a copy of the stock firmware floating around, nor is there any custom firmware that actually supports the device. And the chances of any of those happening in the future is slim.

Thanks but why do you say anything root related probably won't happen on this device?

Because it's a TracFone/Straight Talk/Net10 device and it's a relatively expensive one. What's the point in the modding scene supporting this device when the number of people using it compared to other phones is so miniscule?
I don't think any other of their other Android devices can install custom firmware yet either, and at least a couple of them have been in the wild for over a year.

Yea I see you're point in this. Do you think there is a way to add the kies software to this device and get it to update? When I activated this phone it stated an ota firmware update but wouldn't connect to the servers that way either. Just looking for options other than returning it cause I'm paid up till Jan.
When did you get the phone? I got mine maybe three weeks ago, if that, and when I activated it there were no updates available and there haven't been any since. I'm wondering if maybe it's showing an update that's not really there - a bug of some sort.
For me personally, I've made Gingerbread more tolerable by rooting (it's possible using the AT&T SGH-I777 method, Google it, you just can't install CWM recovery afterward and therefore can't install Cyanomod) and using Holo Launcher (implements the ICS launcher in Gingerbread). All of that is like giving morphine to a somebody who just got their legs blown off though. It helps a bit, but it doesn't solve the core problem.
I don't really think you have any other option than returning and getting a different phone (not from ST or TF) if ICS or JB is a must. =/

About two weeks ago, and it may have been reading the ota through at&t somehow idk, its no biggie maybe this phone will get some Dev love being it is an s2 after all. At any rate I'm over it I'll just keep using it till I decide to buy another.
Are they ads in the notification pulldown? Apps are supposed to have toggles for these, but in my experience they don't always work or devs just don't let you turn them off at all. Or are you talking about getting ads elsewhere?
If the app doesn't have a toggle for it in its options, the only thing you can do is contact the developer and hope they listen or uninstall it. Might have to do both.

I am trying to get my AT&T Samsung Galaxy s2 to be a hotspot. When I go to settings, Tethering and portable hotspots, when I try to turn on portable wi-fi hotspot. it says mobile hotspot is unavailable. Is there an app I can download? Or someway to turn on the mobile hotspot?
