If the rooting sorts my problem, job done. If it doesn't of course I'll return it to the original settings before I send back. That goes without saying.
However, on a wider note, if someone does post something on this forum that you consider to be morally wrong, it's none of your business and you should keep your thoughts to yourself. Who do you think you are?
Anyway, water under the bridge mate. Let's move on!

You do talk wet, I will openly say what I want as long as I don't offend
Who do I think I am? A human being with the right to voice my opinion
So what do we do about this? Do I need to try and get another from orange or is it fixable?
You can try and get orange to issue you with a new one
The only fix would be to flash generic s3 firmware which should bring back the update options in your menu, you could then look into debranding your s3 so you also get the latest generic firmware updates, flashing your phone will void your warranty so see what Orange say first before doing any flashing
My pebble blue arrived in store last Wednesday. I went into store on Thursday morning and cancelled the pre-order after reading about the software issues on here. Luckily I got my deposit back and rather oddly, when I informed the staff why I was not accepting the handset they didn't argue but instead informed me that this issue was one of the other reasons (besides the paint issue) for the further delay with the blue handsets. To be quite honest, they didn't seem surprised by me saying that I will now be buying an unbranded handset from CPW and changing my Orange SIM only contract to accommodate more data allowance and mins. However what really riled me is that when I asked if I could use Orange insurance with my personal phone which will be housing an Orange SIM Only 12 month contract and the fact I have been with Orange for years... their answer. No! I have to go onto a proper contract with their unfit for purpose phones to get that insurance, so I'll now be covering the phone using my home contents insurance instead.
I swear i've been with Orange for about 7yrs now and if it wasn't for the fact that the coverage with other providers is shocking in my local area I'd change provider in a heartbeat! They really are ****ing useless!!
Sorted mine I flashed official unbranded firmware, It has now got the update option and I am on the latest software. My binary count is still 0 and It says official software
I seem to have the same problem as everbody else but I have some questions (I am completely new to Android). I negotiated a good upgrade deal with Orange which included supply of a generic unbranded unlocked phone (all documented in emails).
My questions are:
1. How do I tell whether the Orange bloatware is installed - I get the Orange splash screen but browsing around the apps there does not seem to be any sign of any additional software. Can somebody give me a quick check that I can do to confirm that this is the case
2. I don't appear to have the Software Upgrade option - but just to check that I am looking in the right place, where does that option appear on the About device page - which ahas a grey title bar with About Device and then two sub-menus Status and Legal and then some information Model No, Android version, etc
3. Has anybody managed recently to get a truely unbranded, generic phone from Orange - looking through these threads, I couldn't see anybody who had succeeded in this
4. What is involved in rooting. How complex is it and what are the risks/downsides.
I have only just realised that were updates available but can't do it on my orange unbranded phone. Had it since release. Anyone help with my options. Can I still send it back ?
In reply to an earlier question I got my phone on launch day from an orange store and it's has no orange symbols on start up or shut down and thwarted update option is present if this helps anyone.
Late reply as I've been very busy
I upgraded to the s3 about 3 months ago through orange but picked it up in the orange store. I broke it earlier this week and rang orange n they replaced my phone but sent it to my house. The otger phone had issues and so does this one! Even worse i have the software update missin so i cant update my phone to see if that is the problem! Off i go to the orange shop yet again!!
Hey guys, ive got an S3 had it over a month or so. Just noticed after reading this thread that i dont have the option to update.
I went into the store but the guy was more than useless but i had no idea how to approach the issue with confidence.
So in what way have you guys argued your point? What did you say your reason was for wanting a replacement because i feel saying "i want to have that option" will heed the answer f**k off lol.
However. My purchase was an eBay special I'm on Orange though. Just say you're going to leave them for 3 or something and they pretty much suck your balls.
