Default Anyone seen a car dock?

My life will cease to exist without one. I use my DX daily in the car dock for GPS and streaming radio. I sure hope they have one or one comes out soon. Anyone seen any details on a good car dock?

Thats the only thing Moto did right.their car docks have made my car experience flawless! no wires hanging everywhere, charges when i dock it, auto launches car home ultra.....i want a s3 bad i just don't know what to do about a car dock either. i guess a good generic dock with a NFC tag could get the same result minus the wired in charger....anyone know of a proprietary dock or a sleek aftermarket one? help us safe drivers over here out please.I wanna pre order this beast just need a car solution NOW!

ok i looked really hard to find a suitable replacement and came to the conclusion that us spoiled moto users are going to suffer bigtime! the only and best solution i can find is a brodit active car mount, coupled with a nfc tag. google brodit active car mount. The other problem is i use landscape in the car and it looks like the phone would fall out using it like this! Anybody else find anything?come on Moto users help each other out here! I know a bunch of people are jumping ship from moto to sammy

Samsung makes charging auto docks with auto detect mode switch for a few of their latest handsets. There's no reason there won't be one for the SIII. Unfortunately it's not on the site yet.

The car dock issue was ALMOST enough for me to go with the Razr MAXX instead of the GS3. In fact, I had the phone and dock in-hand for a few days but decided I'd gamble on docks for the GS3. The Motorola dock for the MAXX worked so smoothly, I can only hope Samsung's car dock works as well. The only thing that gives me pause so far is the official GS3 dock I've seen doesn't have a sliding connector, you'll have to manually plug it in.

Come on Samsung, don't let me down.

If anyone is looking for an active car dock for their S3 you can use the Infuse car dock.

Thanks Araxen for that info. I preordered my phone but I know I will miss my DX dock.

Something I read somewhere says it has a 3.5mm audio jack + charger. Can you confirm this? Does the single connection output audio as well?

Thanks!

That would be a deal killer for me. I pre-ordered two S3s. If there isn't an integrated car dock with a built in power connector and an auto sensing car UI mode, I'll be selling my S3s on ebay or craigslist, pocketing the cash, and they paying full price for the razr hd when it comes out.

I'll have to study the Samsung Infuse one posted above. It looks powered. If it works for only $14, that will hold me over till a dedicated one comes out. $14 is throw away, ebay type material.

Well they bumped the price up to $23. I should have bought one when I saw his post the other night. Oh well, $23 is still be better that what Samsung's official SIII dock will be (probably $50).

I called Samsung today and they told me the generic vehicle dock(the one without the integrated USB connector) is the only one that will be availble for the S3, so it looks like modified Infuse docks are going to be the only choice.

Not scaremongering but spotted this a few days ago
someone's SG3 go up in flames from the charging point possibly using an in car charger (possibly not Samsung) and could be the cause or what Samsung may say is the cause
Quote:
It could be said that Samsung are clearly misleading people when they claim that the new Galaxy S III is “Made for Humans”. As the pictures show, it may be designed to murder them viciously and without remorse.
Pictures posted by an angry unsuspecting member of the public calling themselves Dillo2k10 show that Samsung’s dastardly plan came close to fruition with obvious burn damage on and around the charging port.
Dillo2k10 said “‘I was driving along with my Galaxy S3 in my car mount when suddenly a white flame, sparks and a bang came out of the phone. The phone was destroyed and it slightly burned a piece of plastic on the inside of my car. ” whilst adding “‘I’m really annoyed. That could have burned the side of my face or through my pocket and my leg, or set fire to my bed. It’s very dangerous.”
Quite why anyone would have a car mount in their bed or in their pocket is beyond my comprehension!
Samsung have said that they will investigate the claim and check if the unit is liable to overheat and is now trying to get hold of the unit.
A spokesman said: ‘Samsung is aware of this issue and will begin investigating as soon as we receive the specific product in question. Once the investigation is complete, we will be able to provide further details on the situation.’
The phone which has been called the “iPhone killer” will now have to be redubbed the “Human Killer”.
This is not the first time that smartphones have mounted murderous missions against their human captors, with iPhones having been reported as exploding and overheating.
One does wonder how long it will be before the technology is perfected and all smartphone users simultaneously burst into flames!
We here at Coolsmartphone recommend that you only use genuine manufacturer recommended accessories with your smartphone in order to help prevent accidents whilst reminding readers that there are over 10 million Galaxy S3′s in circulation and this is the only report so far of an “exploding” handset.

What's weird about that story is if you've watched the tear down video on YouTube the only thing in that area is the primary microphone and 3G antenna. Hope Samsung releases their findings.

Arkon has a couple Galaxy S 3 mounts. I Prefer the mobile grip, but if you have a big case you might want to check out the slim-grip. They're priced very reasonably:

Anyone see a Samsung branded car charger for a little cheaper then what Samsung wants for off there site?

am I living in crazy town? First Google removes USB mass storage support from ICS, now the manufacturer of what could possibly be the most popular Android handset ever can't be bothered to support it with basic accessories. So many incomprehensible decisions.

Nothing personal, but I hope you're wrong... I think you're right, though. Only hope is that this phone will be so popular that there will be OEM quality solutions available.

Wouldn't it be sweeeeeet if they made a non contact (3 foot radius) induction charging dongle for the car! Probably be at least $100, but I'd have to buy that.

I use a Tetrax magnetic mount on my Droid X and will be using it for the SGS3 as well. I plan to plant a NFC tag in the car to set it up for car use.

UPDATE: Google Android Engineer Dan Morrill took to reddit to explain that yes, ICS does have USB Mass Storage Support, but the Galaxy Nexus does not, since it does not have a removable storage card. While this explanation is helpful, it still doesn’t solve the issue where users may want to retrieve/store non-media files off of their device (ie: saved log files from apps, downloaded files, etc..). Via reddit.

I got the Samsung car dock in today, and the one for the infuse, and can confirm it fits perfectly. Haven't had a chance to put it in my car yet but it does fit and it is powered. Only cost me $15 too.

Huh? Are you saying that if I have android with ICS and I plug it into my pc it won't see the sd card as a drive?

If true, that would be a deal killer for me to. I use my android to move music to and from my pc through the usb cable.

I'm pretty sure you can't be right about that or I've simply misunderstood your statement.

I have to admit I haven't really been paying much attention to the Android scene for the last year or so and didn't know about it until I started reading this forum again. It's not so much that it doesn't work that way, it's just that they've gimped it. Check out these few good posts from the Verizon preorder thread:

One of my big beefs with ICS is its meddling with USB Mass Storage, and essentially blocking the USB transfer to your PC of any files "it deems" not to be media or photo related. I just wondered which direction that went in Jellybean, since you have one in hand? Any chance of a reversal on that (stupid) development idea?

Quote:
Originally Posted by Zoandroid View Post
The short story is that when Google started developing Android 4, they decided to abandon one of those 4 USB connection options you mention (I have only ever seen 3), namely USB Mass Storage (USM). From what I have read, they switched to only allowing two (Windows) protocols - PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol) and MTP (Media Transfer Protocol), either of which essentially look at the type of files on your Android 4 device and then refuse to allow transfer (by USB, understand) files not deemed belonging to the realms of pictures and media. Very Apple of them, IMO. Why? Well, one Galaxy Nexus forum thread supposedly coming from a Samsung tech claimed their ultimate goal is to eliminate all "outside hardware connections" and external memory devices (SD cards) from Android devices. Ostensibly to get away from the diversification of where programs and files are/can be/ stored, to make it easier on program developers to code for "a single uniform platform design". I'm not buying it.

Now, there ARE alternatives, as this issue is currently only affecting USB in Android 4 devices. What I have found is that I can use a free app called Cheetah Sync to wifi sync "any" files from my rooted Iconia A500 tablet's Internal Storage (SD Card) and External SD Card (this is the confusing mess I referred to as diversification ) over to my Win7 PC since I can't do it with a simple USB connection after flashing ICS. Bluetooth might also work but I haven't tried it.

If you research the issue, you'll encounter a supposedly renowned tech journalist who insists that any ICS device which has an external SD slot and USB socket are not affected by this and still support USM. He is dead wrong. It doesn't work on my tablet, and it also doesn't work on my son's stock Transformer TF201 which came with ICS. Both have the hardware mentioned, and neither can transfer files which are not pictures or media. For me, not being into either of those categories, my tablet displays blank Windows Explorer windows when connected, where when it ran Honeycomb my PC was able to see and access every file in those locations and copy any I wanted back and forth to the same PC. I do so weekly as precautionary backups, having endured total SD card failure a few times (lost everything).

Under the PTP/MTP USB connection, there is no popup in the Android Notifications, no popup in Windows to show a device has been connected, and no "Safely Remove" icon available in Windows task tray when you plug in the device. It just shows up as a drive in Windows Explorer (however blank, for me).

I had to mount my Incredible in the A/C vent and blow cold air at it to keep it from overheating while charging and using the GPS. None of these SG3 mounts see to be vent mounts - anyone know if this phone has the heat/charging while using GPS problem that the Incredible does?

Just ordered one of these from amazon. I was a little skeptical that it would work on most surfaces, but watch the vid on their site. Looks like a similar suction system to the one on my ag gps that stayed put on a curved window holding a lot more weight than a phone.

Very apple of them? Not even apple has crippled USB mass storage mode. I can transfer files to and from my ipad and touch over usb and it works just fine.

I've done enough research after reading this thread to know that it still works fine but you have to enable it differently than before otherwise it will only recognize certain media files.

Can anybody tell me how the swivel part on the Infuse mount is made? Is it a ball and nut like the Motorola mounts? Can you take it apart and use another ball mount? I already have a Panavise custom mount in my car with a 17 mm ball mounted to it.

For those of you going the Infuse car dock route, someone at XDA said they found one half price at an AT&T store. They are half price ($17.99) on the website too: AT&T Infuse 4G car dock

Awesome to hear the Infuse mount will work. I have the Epic 4G Touch for Sprint and picked up the Infuse car dock and deck dock for something like $17.50 from the AT&T store. So for kicks you might want to see what they price out as a bundle as opposed to individual. I did this a while ago but it's worth a shot if your picking one of them up anyway.

Thanks, ordered for $19 and change shipped. If I don't like it, it can go back to an ATT store.

I checked out some vids on YouTube. I'm leaning towards one of the Arkons. Can't decide between the low profile and the flexible one, though. Having it mounted on the dash would be great for putting a windshield sunshade up without having to take the mount off all the time.

Anyone know what the Infuse was called in Europe? I'd like the dock but the US sites won't allow non-US customers to order it. :-(

According to Wikipedia it was only a US/Canada release. You might try Amazon and eBay if you have access to them.

You can find it on ebay here.

The seller ships internationally and to the UK it works out at about £13.50 ish.

If true, that would be a deal killer for me to. I use my android to move music to and from my pc through the usb cable.

I'm pretty sure you can't be right about that or I've simply misunderstood your statement.
you can use it as a mass storage, you just have to use the USB cable that came in the S3 box.

I found out that you can't use any other USB cable, it won't do the transfer.

Any idea what the difference in the cable is? Be nice to get a few with our being overcharged by Samsung.

I have an Arkon mount for my Droid X. Im pretty sure this phone will fit it(i put my co-workers Galaxy Nexus in it and it fit and the S3 is comparable in size to the Nexus)
