The voice camera "cheese" function will not work if its setup for google voice instead you need to change it to Samsung Voice recognizer Vlingo - i believe its under the settings, language and input where you would enable the voice app feature -

Other than that - this thin is awesome - it just literally picked up my Samsung LED TV and i was able to transfer over the song i was listening to to the TV and it even acts as a remote control - so far the battery is pretty good as well 82% since 630am and its 1130am - I am using it alot though!
Thank you for the advice about Vlingo. I have been trying to get that to work properly for ages.

You can lock the touch screen while watching a full screen video by pressing the power button one time. This is AMAZING for me because my toddler likes to watch youtube cartoons and hold the phone.

The google voice will not work with the voice app recognition built into the phone for some reason - you have to change it to Samsung Vlingo for those voice commands to work -

I thought there was something wrong with my brand new phone as i was screaming at it to take my picture and nothing was happening until i changed it (both by enabling voice apps and changing google voice to samsung vlingo) - than say cheese and wah-lah!

Also i will say it again i charged my phone last night for a good portion of the night and took it off this morning (this after letting it drain out from the store) and its at 50% from a 630am off charger and i have been using it non stop for music, calls, emails, txts, some flipboard and some web usage - alot better than my Evo!

The extra photo editor is a very nice addition too as well as the recommended Office Suite 2 version which is also free!

Text messages too. I thought there was an option for the voice to read the message to you, but I cant figure that out yet.

I tried it with sms and the sms tone went off like normal. Is there a setting in driving mode I'm missing? I could only get it to do the voice notification with calls and emails...

I am not sure to be honest. I was just driving and it told me I had a new text message from the person that texted me. I also understand its supposed to read the message to you as well but it didnt do it. I am at work right now and I will play with it on my way home.

Hey bud I just found this.

I think I have done everything I need to do:

1) Settings -> Language and Input -> Text-to-speech output -> Driving mode -> slide to on -> check all 7 items (including "Message Read out senders' information when new messages arrive").

2) Select S Voice -> Settings -> Message check "Show body of message".

Once I have done the above, I select "Diving mode" on from icon at the top of the pull down menu from the home screen (it goes green from grey/blue).

Lock the phone. If I then unlock, it reads out the time, missed message etc. Then I get someone to send me a text - doesn;t read out sender or body of text grrrrrgrgrgrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!

Any pointers? Anyone got this working or is it marketing BS? s

I'm on Verizon so don't have the Samsung Apps app. When I go to the web page, there is no link to download the apps either, it says to download via the device or Keis, which I don't have or want. Is there any other way to get these apps?

Thanks for this! A setting I didn't know existed on this phone (one of many....)!

I can't get it to read out the message body, but I'm cool with that I didn't know it had all these features anyways and am thrilled to have found out more about it. Appreciate it

Here you go...

Samsung Apps

Go to the webpage on your phone and download it. Or download it on your PC then transfer it to the phone.

Not true - it's working fine for me. I am using the Google voice recognition as I think it's better.

Oh, and here's my little list of super cool stuff not mentioned, not all GS3 specific:

1 )real-time voice recognition when texting. This is AWESOME and Google's implementation works really well. This is faster than Swyping for me.
2) The stock quotes and news live wallpapers. I don't know if you'd want to leave this on, but for showing off, this looks REALLY good. Try it out.
3) Voice-activated camera. This is great. I like being able to hold the camera steady, and if you want to take a picture of yourself and someone else, and use the higher res cam, this is terrific.
4) S-Voice can actually answer factual questions from Wolfram Alpha, and it's useful for setting alarms and timers. However, if you want to use Google's Voice Actions, that works great too.
5) Coming from a Droid X, it was embarrassing to me that when I had Google Music or many other music apps playing, pulling the headphone plug out didn't immediately stop the music, sometimes for a good 30 seconds. NO MORE! OMG THANK YOU FOR NOT EMBARRASSING ME IN FRONT OF MY iPHONE TOTING FRIENDS.
6) Notification sounds don't go off when you have the screen on. I bet you guys haven't even noticed this. Nice touch.
7) Sound quality is VERY, VERY good. I am a musician and have a mid-fi amp and $1500 speakers, so I know what "good" is supposed to sound like, and the included ear buds and sound is quite good, on par with the iPhone now. My Droid X's sound, in comparison, was dreadful. What I really need to do is A/B it with a good headphone DAC...

I do really like the Samsung calendar widgets too...Unfortunately, I like Apex's launcher better and they don't show up at all when in Apex.

I also really miss long pressing search for voice actions....This is how I navigated everywhere with Google Nav. Now I have to push two buttons, and I don't think there's a way to make a shortcut straight to voice actions like the old Froyo Voice Search button.

Press and hold the menu key while on a home screen and it goes right to google search.

I just noticed that the charging light is not on when the screen is on, but it does go on when I turn the screen off. Did I change some setting to make this happen or was it always this way and I just didn't notice? I'd like the charging light to be on when the screen is on, especially when it's in the car dock since it's hard to see the the tiny little white line on the battery icon.

Also, my phone has started to lag when I press the power button to turn off the screen - sometimes it's instant and sometimes it takes 3-4 seconds. Anyone else having this issue?

I have seen a few videos where in the video when they get a message it shows in the notification bar who the message is from. Is this a stock option or some third party app. I am new to android and trying to learn this as I go. Thanks.

It's stock. You shouldn't have to do anything for this to show.

change windows animation scale and transition scale to off.

Home button and lock screen are now at ludacris speed.

This may not be that big of a deal to some, but anytime you have the keyboard showing, there is a little keyboard icon in the notification area. If you touch that, it will give you all your input options. So you can go from typing to voice with just a touch.

Also, I installed the Swype Beta keyboard, and it has the voice to text feature as well - only now it looks like an S besides the space bar instead of a microphone. I found that easier to use than the stock keyboard after all.

I've found the easiest way to get it to read out texts in driving mode, (and allow you to respond easily) is to simply open S-Voice when leaving your house. It's not like you need to interact with the phone while driving anyway. That way when a text comes in, it reads it to you and gives you the option to respond with voice.

So you saying just have Svoice open while your driving? I use my phone to play music. I am not sure if this is going to work for me. I thought when it was in driving mode it would read them automatically.

I already had them set to .5 but turned them off to try this. Wow, it then took about 20-30 seconds for the screen to turn off. Tried several times. Put them back to .5 and turning off went back to taking 3 seconds.

Edit: uninstalled my true blood live wallpaper and that stopped the turn-off lag. Too bad, I really loved the dark reds and black.

So, if .5 is better than off, 1.0 must be even better, right? Nope, back to 30 seconds. Maybe this is just coincidental, but I'm leaving them at .5.

Yeah that link for Samsung apps is quite nice. One free app people might want to try is video maker. it is free from the Samsung Apps Store. There are a number of apps there (some are normally paid apps) that are free. Although the link given above does not have our device specified it actually works on the S3. You will have to create an account but I was NOT asked to enter credit info.

Poste a thread with pics of this as well but I'll mention it here just because there are loads of tips in here as well:

A lot of people have said that they didn't have text reflow when zooming in the browser. Apart from the fit text in the advanced settings in the browser which makes the text reflow nicely there is also another option. When the page has loaded a green R appears at the end of the URL on top of the page. If you press that the webpage is reformatted in a reading pane and it is nice and easy to read with options to increase or decrease font. Once you are done reading you can press back or Done on the top of the page and it takes you back to the original website.
Pretty neat

That's all

PS This is for the stock browser.

Also, I installed the Swype Beta keyboard, and it has the voice to text feature as well - only now it looks like an S besides the space bar instead of a microphone. I found that easier to use than the stock keyboard after all.
Thank you so much! Now I know how to change the input method. I couldn't figure out how to do it without going into the settings.

Not true at all. It works with Google Voice recognition. Someone else above confirmed that as well.

Default opening camera from lock screen

I had troubles with this too. Make sure you don't take your finger or thumb off the screen while you rotate the phone. I was lifting my finger off as I turned in horizontal and it wasn't starting the camera app up. Once you get it down once it's easy.

Its a great shortcut as it frees up an additional spot on your lock screen for another app!

To anyone not using S Voice, open up the S Voice app, hit menu, settings, and turn S Voice activation off. This will make your home button respond much quicker. With S Voice turned on, the phone waits nearly half a second before it goes home, as it's waiting for a second click to initiate S Voice.

Load 'Clock' then 'Alarm' tab.
Next tap the + symbol to create a new Alarm.
Now look down where it says 'Alarm Type' and tap to select the bottom item 'Briefing'.

Job done.....

Hey guys, I've been trying to use the camera shortcut from the lock screen and can not figure out what I am doing wrong, but my camera does not start.
Here is how I understand shortcut works:
On the lock screen put the finger on the screen and slowly turn phone into landscape screen. I done this multiple times and camera never came up :-(. What am I doing wrong?

Hold the home key and then hold the power button - you'll hear it make the camera shutter sound when it takes the screen shot

There is also the option of just palm swiping the screen and it will take one.

I had a hard time figuring it out at first. Use your actual palm either facing the screen or on its side (area between pinky and wrist.) If you use fingers that aren't flat you'll end up clicking/swiping/scrolling.

Also:
Menu>Settings>Motions to get to some of the stuff people have mentioned. If you aren't familiar with them they have tutorials for it all.

Another fun little option but certainly not exclusive to this phone/app: I use an app called Tiny Flashlight + LED. Has mostly the normal lights but one setting I found fun is the "shake on lockscreen" to enable/disable the led light. Does what it says: Just give the phone a quick shake while on the lockscreen to turn the led on and off.

I typed this so fast I forgot to mention you do need an allshare cast dongle though (the most important part, haha).....sorry i had a brain freeze. I lucked out with a buddy who had one, but they will be more widely available in the upcoming weeks here. This site has them

Is this allshare dongle a USB dongle or what? Does it add storage to a tv or rely on the TVs storage?
