Default What is car mode?

Hi guys. I picked up some Tec Tiles and one of the options is Car Mode. What is this and what does it do exactly? Thanks.

I believe it reads incoming messages to you.

Aha! Strange that reading messages is the only thing that it does. Would have made more sense for it to be called "text message dictation" or something.

So, my truck's sync system used to access texts on my Droid X. But when I try it now, it tells me that feature isn't enabled on this phone. Sad face. But, maybe all I need to do is enable driving mode, and the texts will be accessible then? Something to check out, as I haven't found any other setting yet to enable that feature. Any other suggestions for this?

Driving mode doesn't work.

-It stops reading and voice prompting randomly
-The REPLY command doesn't work after it reads an incoming text message
-Doesn't appear to support commands or voice recognition via bluetooth
-Will just disappear and need to be restarted.

If you learn the commands of S voice it can be usable. Set alarms. Send texts. Call someone. Weather etc. Its not as user friendly as Siri in the sense you can ask things more openly. But if you know the exact commands it likes you can use it. Its not a total waste. People just need to give it a shot and understand it.

Dervari.. I have to tell my truck to go into "Voice" mode under the Bluetooth menu. I can then send voice commands over Bluetooth and the factory installed mic. This works well with S-Voice.

Agreed. Car mode causes S Voice to start listening for commands, so I figured I'd give her a shot at sending a text. Too bad she never understands what I'm saying unless I'm holding the phone to my mouth. Kind of defeats the purpose of car mode. Keeping my fingers crossed that messaging over Bluetooth is added in an update in the near future? If that's possible?

Car mode and Driving mode aren't the same thing...

I can put the phone in Driving mode using the notification bar toggle and it does the following - reads out who is calling, reads out who has sent a text or email (but doesn't read out the content).

I can put it in Car mode using an NFC tag, this does - turns off screen timeout, makes buttons bigger so you can press stuff on the screen easier. No voice control as far as I can tell, apart from launching Svoice.

This is without bluetooth on, not sure if that would make a difference.

Yeah, that was a feature I really liked on my DX, just being notified of an incoming text was nice, plus the autoreply I set up ("Can't text now I'm driving"). Seems silly that they would make that function inaccessible, since it's a whole lot safer than picking up the phone itself.

And getting my contacts synched to Sync (a Ford/Microsoft feature) was a bit of an adventure that took some doing but I finally figured out! Now my voice dialing from bt works again.

There's a "Car Mode" built into the phone, or is this your own setup you implemented using the NFC tags?

when im in my car connected to Ford Sync and i get a text. it dings there is a message. then i let the screen black out. once it does i push the physical home button and it reads the text to me through the car speakers. this is with drive mode turned on through the notification toggle.

Default Sync & the S3

I was really disappointed that Sync in my 2010 Fusion wouldn't read my text messages. I had the Droid Bionic on ICS and it did read them.. My mom just got a 2013 Edge with the My Ford Touch and even though I haven't tested it I believe that it will read the incoming texts. Wish I could upgrade my Sync... oh well when I get my 2014 Fusion Energi I'll have it...

Doesn't appear from your device list that this is with an S3?

LOL!! I have a 2011 F250 - not buying anything else for a looooong time. Here's hoping a software update on the phone opens that text feature back up.

But that's your phone speaking and not your car, right? Maybe it's by design, and they're trying to push the SVoice thing. Rats.

I'll try driving mode today and see if it reads the texts through bt - I guess I could live with that. It's just easier with the truck, my phone can stay in my purse and I can choose through my nav interface whether I want them read to me or not.

If I may link to another forum, I was looking at this post which made me curious. Has anybody else received an "allow message access profile" message when connecting to Sync?

Message Access Profile???

It's built into the phone but I can only find a way to access it using the 'car dock' action in NFC Task Launcher. It comes up in the notification bar as 'Car mode on, tap to disable' with an icon the same as the Driving Mode one. But they seem to do different things. I think Car Mode is an android thing, Driving mode is a Samsung thing.

What's Ford Sync? If I have driving mode on it won't read my messages out loud or give me an option to reply.

ford sync is ford's bluetooth system that connects your phone or ipod to the sound system throughout the car. you can touch the phone button and say "call (?)" or touch the music button and do the same. different phones have different ways and not all work the same. for my S3 this is what i do. i have a phone holder next to my steering wheel. my phone is connected (bluetooth) and driving mode is on. when i get a text while listening to FM radio the phone dings. i then tap the home button and the phone speaker reads the text to me. person from and message body. when im listening to my music from my phone and i get a text i the music pauses, the phone dings and music resumes. i push the home button and the music pauses and the phone reads the same as mentioned before but through my car speakers. when its done the music resumes. im not doing anything with S voice but also i have tested it enough yet. my car is an 08 Mercury Milan and its compatible with Ford Sync. please let me know if this is at all helpful and if needed i can check out all my settings and see if there is any more info i can provide. good luck and enjoy that S3.....its freaking awesome!!!
