So what is everyone's take on Jellybean not supporting Flash? Seems like a step backwards towards the iPhone arena. I know HTML5 is the new thing, but I don't see sites rushing to convert from flash.

I can't believe I didn't see this posted here yet! Very good news for SG3 owners, and the wait apparently won't be long

The insiders of SamMobile reported that Samsung is testing Android 4.1 for the Galaxy S III and Galaxy S II.
Samsung is almost ready to update their Galaxy S III devices to Android 4.1.
There is no date planned yet but it could be around August / September.

The only way this seems possible is if they planned an ICS release...and have been working on JB for a couple months already. Even when the phone was not out. I can't see them releasing the phone, and starting on JB and getting it out by August. You wonder if the new iphone coming out pushed them to get the phone out without JB. Its really hard for me to believe they couldn't wait a month or so and get the phone with JB. Since this phone was so highly anticipated.

I agree it was highly anticipated but most new phones are tested and R/D is with a older stable working OS. Also this device was a very big secret to make it work with JB would have let the cat out of the bag IMHO.

Very few people worked on the S3 to keep the details a secret it was moved in a top secret case so no would see the device before it was complete to have more people working on the device with knowladge of Jelly Bean would allow for more people to see it thus bigger chance of the top secret project not being so top secret.

You really think that the "secret" of the phone is more important then releasing a phone with Jelly Bean? I think the argument that they wanted to get the phone out with a stable OS before Apple does their big launch has a lot more leverage behind it. I agree they wanted to keep this phone secret, but that being the sole reason they didn't launch with JB does not seem very likely to me. I do think launching the phone with a really good stable OS (like you said) is a good point. If they launched the phone with JB and it had a huge problem, it would destroy their opening sales. Think the launch of Windows Vista. Never recovered.
Also letting us have JB just a few months after the release is a sneaky way of making it seem like they are updating phones faster. Haha.

If you download apex launcher that pretty much looks exactly like jelly bean

I'll believe jelly bean is ready when Samsung officially announces something. So far they've been silent on the matter. "sources extremely close to Samsung" isn't Samsung!

But the thing is, the phone was so highly anticipated that people couldn't stand waiting any more. And I don't think that the iPhone was the factor that made them release it. I think it was the One X. They didn't want people to get fed up with waiting and get a One X instead, it being the only big thing of the moment with quad core, 720p, and ICS.
And why would a company forfeit a month of sales of a flagship device if they don't have to? I for one was quite ignorant of the impending release of Jelly Bean and was looking forward to having a new phone with ICS which was receiving all the praise it deserves. I hadn't heard anyone bemoaning having to have an ICS device. It was what everyone was waiting for.
If you have an unbranded phone you'll get the update as soon as Samsung release it.
If your phone is branded you'll have to wait for your carrier to release the firmware, which will likely be some time after Samsung release it.
You can't come on here and tell me the iphone launch would not hurt release sales. If those phones came out at the same time we would not be seeing the numbers the S3 has today, and the same with the iphone. Also Samsung got their phone out in time to be heavily advertised in the Olympics. The most watched event in the world. Overall I think its great timing and to maybe have JB only a month or two from launch is great.
Samsung gets it from Google. And Verizon needs to get it after that (for me). Anyone have any predictions for the the VZW S3 JB launch?

I have the international version and it's open-line. So I guess mine is classified as unbranded.
With all the rumors flying around, it's hard to speculate when it will be released. It really depends on the carriers.
Some carriers are notorious for releasing updates later than others, so some will probably see it sooner than others which is a shame. But that's the way it always seems to work with Android. One of my buddies has a Nexus on Verizon and he's still waiting for JB.
Personally I think we'll see probably see the updates start rolling out in mid September through early October. Being a Sprint customer the smart thing to do IMO is to get JB rolled out ASAP to help alleviate some of the negative press they've been getting due to the NV/LTE rollout and the issues a lot of people have been having as far as call quality and abismal 3G speeds.
But again I'm just spitballing here.

It is fine to be skeptical of rumors and speculation of other posters. It is not OK to insult people on their speculations. It does not help grow the community experience we all work to build. Thanks!

"Some time" on Verizon being defined as about 1/2 year.
So does anyone know if Flash can be added to the JB OS? I seem to recall that Flash was not initially installed on the GNex, but we were able to add it afterwards.
Personally I think it's a problem not having it. I visit many sites that support it and see the frustration on my wife's face when her IPhone can't play a video. I don't want to be in that camp.
I was just reading that JB won't have Flash. Adobe isn't going to make a Flash plugin for anything after ICS. Is anyone concerned about that?
I'm not worried. Partially because I don't use flash anymore. The second part being that they also said the same about ICS when it first rolled it out. They said they were not going to develop it for ICS, yet they did anyways.
Adobe are ending support for flash on mobile devices, next week someone the app will disappear from the play store, luckily there are plenty of copies around.

if youve rooted but havent done anything else, you should still get the OTA update, but you will lose root access. you can try voodoo's OTA rootkeeper from the play store, but i think ive read that doesnt work 100% of the time...
I may be wrong but JB doesn't look like a vast improvement over ICS. I know it's only a point change and not major but I would have thought that the amount of press that JB is getting it would be more of a leap forward than just a step.

While I'm not certain for every variant, I'm fairly certain this is not the case. The root processes I've seen involve flashing a custom recovery to replace the stock recovery, then flashing SU or rooted ROMs to root the phone. If this is the case, then the OTA will give a notification that one is available, it will download, then it'll fail to flash as it's configured to work with stock recovery, not a custom one.
So, there are two solutions to update to 4.1 when it comes out. 1) Return to full stock via Odin, update via OTA, then re-root or 2) flash the official firmware/software that has been rooted already via custom recovery.

It's getting rave reviews because it finally got rid of that small ui lag that other versions had. I don't know if non nexus devices will see the difference though because we've yet to see what an oem skin will do to it.

I kinda hope being that I bought my S3 outright, completely devoid of any carrier that it'll arrive fairly soon, vs carrier branded ones. Interestingly enough, my S3 is quite a margin quicker than my friends 3UK branded S3.
As for the flash, just backup the APK using Titanium Backup, and then install it on JB later.
It's not supported, that doesn't mean it wont work. Also, it's already mentioned that flash is turd, slow, buggy and a miserable battery hog, Apple actually got something right!
This has been known about for a while . Adobe is not supporting android 4.1+
It's not really an issue though. Flash player is mostly dead. Everyone's moving on to html5
Html 5 isn't all that easy to implement. Browsers on desktops are very inconsistent with their support and the browsers that do support html 5 video don't all support the same formats. Therefore, to use html 5, you have to use 2 or 3 different file formats with a fallback to Flash. It's hard for me to believe that Flash is not going to used for awhile yet.
Where can you get the apk file? Do you just do a search?
