Default "Fling" Compass makes it inaccurate

When in compass app, Google Maps, or any other application that uses the Galaxy S3 compass, it seems to start off correct. Holding the phone parallel to the floor or holding the phone straight up and down seems to read the correct direction. Turning the phone one way SLOWLY about 90 degrees, then "flinging" or spinning it fast to its original starting position turns the compass by about 45 degrees each time. Doing this 4 or so times, and your compass will read you're going 180 degrees the wrong way.

Anyone else's do this? Is there a way to calibrate the compass? Could it be defective? It's not the app since I've confirmed this in 3 apps
