Default brightness widget - no longer working

I have the Brightness Level widget on Galaxy SIII, TouchWiz, Rooted and Unbranded. Up until today it was working very well!

Now for some inexplicable reason, setting the brightness through this widget, or in fact any brightness widget does not actually change the brightness. The only way I can change it is through the Settings or through the Notifications.

Has anyone experienced this? Have I enabled some option by accident that would disable this?

turns out that the problem is SwipePad. For some reason it disables any widget/app that changes the brightness.
