Letters are associating with numbers in text

When I am in my messaging app , whether it is the stock messages app or handcent app , I proceed to start a new thread and when I choose the letters of the person i want to text it also associates those letters with their "T9 number". For example , when i got to text my friend who's name in my phone is "Zzack" , it registers the "Z"'s BUT also acts as if i hit the "9" key. So all all my contacts that have the number 9 in their phone number populate in the list when all i want to do is see the people who's name starts with z.

This happens with all my letters. I can put in "0aaa" and it brings up contacts who have a "0222" , or "0111" and etc in their number. This happens in handcent , stock messaging app and Google voice app. I have checked all those apps settings and the stock keyboard settings as well. I cannot seem to find this "feature" or possible setting. This drives me insane. Does anyone else experience this or have any suggestions.

im pretty sure its a google thing. sort of like the omnibar and instant search in chrome. im not sure you can turn it off.

Its by design and it can't be turned off.
