Default Update fooked up everything

So, I got a new Samsung Galaxy S 3 before Christmas, we got along well, I started customising it like I wanted it to be, and everything was just sweet.

Then my phone prompted me to update what I believe was the firmware. Me thinking this would be a good thing, accepted, and the installation itself was flawless.

When I started to use it again, however, troubles started.

Firstly, all my dictionary words disappeared, and I am unable to enter new ones after the changes that have been made. The text input and auto correct has been changed - to the worse. I send dramatically fewer text messages these days, because it's all of a sudden a major pain in the ass to write on my phone. (I use the old 3x4 keyboard)

Secondly, whenever I open up my e-mail or the web browser, the light dims so much I can't see anything. This happens regardless of whether I have automatic brightness enabled or not.

Thirdly, my phone's camera now gives me eight (8) versions of the same photograph when I try to take a picture. And when I press the share-button, which I normally do when I want to send an MMS, there isn't any MMS alternative. It has been removed. Only e-mail, Dropbox, Facebook, etc. is left. Which is ridiculous.

There's also lots of other alterations made that I never asked for. Like annoying sounds, a stupid sidebar and other crap that I don't want.

Basically the update ****** up everything I liked about the new phone, and turned it into a useless mess. I hate phones (and computers) that alter themselves like that. If I want a ******* crap auto correct function, I'll install it myself.

I thought this update was for the system, to ensure that everything would run smoothly, to oil the machinery so to speak. Not a bloody new interior!

Please, please, anyone out there who has been kind enough to read through my rant - HOW DO I MAKE ALL THE NEW CRAP GO AWAY AND TURN MY PHONE INTO THE LOVING LITTLE MACHINE IT ONCE WAS??

Have you tried a factory reset? Often times that helps clean things up after a firmware update.

Before jellybean, browser had its own independent screen brightness option - i had same problems as you so i turned it off and it was fine. Just to mention in android each app is fot itself - so you can not setup everuthing on phone level.

It looks to me that youre camera is in Best foto mode - change to single shot.
MMS icon is like normal SMS (you probably know but just in case).

There's also lots of other alterations made that I never asked for. Like annoying sounds, a stupid sidebar and other crap that I don't want.

Sidebar? if it is for multiwindow than long press on bask button when on homescreen will activate/deactivate, or you can go to setting and turn multiwindow off.

No, haven't tried that...but I probably should! Is it easy to do?

To clear this go to camera settings and set Burst Mode to Off. It does seem daft that this defaults to On and that it overrides the Single Shot setting, but at least it's easily put right.

The sidebar is what allows you to run two apps simultaneously, sharing the screen between them. You can get the sidebar to disappear/reappear by doing a long press of the Back button.

Learn to change the settings that annoy you. Simple as that.

1. Multi Window side bar can be disabled.
2. Camera burst mode, see above.
3. Screen dimming - Settings>Display>Auto adjust screen tone
4. Dictionary >Settgings>Input and language.

Yep. Although this is an amazing feature, although its much better if rooted. But I use this a lot. I can have tapatalk on the top part of my screen, writing this message to you and I can have chrome on the bottom half of teh screen, checking how to spell tapatalk

Thanks for solutions to 1. and 2.

As for the others:

3. I've tried this. But the problem persists whether I set the brightness to max or use auto adjustment. Whenever I access the e-mail program, the light dims. When I exit, the brightness is back.

4. The only options for personalisation is to log on to Facebook, Gmail or Twitter for the dictionary to "learn" from there (I mean, WTF?) or to remove that data. Nowhere am I given the simple and intuitive option to edit the dictionary manually...

I think factory reset is my only hope.

It sounds like most of your issues if not all can be fixed in the settings. But yes I can understand your frustration as I am not a huge fan of Jelly Bean. I'd rather have ICS back. Although I'm on Verizon so I don't have the full update you've received, I may be able to help out with the dimming issue. Do you have Power Saver on? If so just turn it off (in the settings). This should take care of your screen issues you are having as power saver adjusts the screen for optimal battery saving. With the browser, previously in the settings with ICS the browser had it's own screen dimming settings which I really didn't understand but I'm the type that likes features, settings so I was ok with it. Now it's all incorporated into the brightness. I recommend turning auto brightness off, it's just a hassle. I set mine to around 1/4 of the slider.

And let me add, buy Swiftkey 3 and use it as your texting app. Just do it! It's like 3 bucks and well worth it!

How is factory reset going to restore your passwords and dictionary?

Well, they are lost already, so I just want my phone back to how it was when I bought it. Then I'll happily reconfigure everything all over again, and never ever install an update again.

How does that work? Does it replace the in built messaging thing? And do I lose my messages?

Edit: Seems like a nice little app, but apparently it doesn't support the traditional 3x4 layout that I use...

I'm not familiar with a 3x4 layout. You referring to a messaging widget? And yeah it replaces the phones messaging. As far as losing your messages, I regularly clear my messages, I have no need to keep them. I know there is a feature to save them.

How did you turn it off? Within the internet app, I see the brightness setting. I have auto turned off and brightness set to 100, yet my screen dims every time I open up the app. My other browsers do not do this.

How would I fix this?

You need to turn off the Power Saving mode setting. That'll fix your problem. It's under your Phone Settings > Power Saving Mode

If you have it enabled in Settings, then just long-press the back button.

I'm thinking about the numeric keypad-layout (don't know the name of it) which all older mobiles had (without touch screens). That's the what I'm familiar with, so that's what I'd like to continue to use... (old fashioned, I know!)
