Default Email notification problem

Hi folks.

I have a Galaxy S3 on VZW. Recently installed the Jelly Bean update.

I use the stock email app with my hosted email server, which is a standard POP3. It shows the notification icon when new messages appear. I will go to the email app and look at them (though not open them - just see them in the email app). But then when the phone goes to the server to sync email (I have it set to every 15 min), the new message notification appears again - as if I hadn't looked at the messages.

I could swear this didn't happen when the phone was running ICS, i.e. before the Jelly Bean update. I keep seeing the new email icon and thinking I have new messages whereas I actually don't. It's aggravating.

Any ideas on how this can be fixed? Certainly my email server hasn't changed.

Many thanks!

- bill.
