Applications running

I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 and when i go to settings then applications manager swipe across to the running apps, there are loads that are open.
1. Do they all need to be open?
2. Should i stop them?
3. Do they run my battery down faster?

In general, I've found that Android tends to handle its own memory management rather well. I've never closed any apps that were running other than games (after I was done playing them) and my device has never had any RAM issues.

Just 'disable' those that annoy you. You won't see them again and they won't be operating until you 'able' them again.

Seconded. I didn't think about the possibility of them being ones that you didn't want to see, OP. If they are ones you don't ever use you can disable them.

It's hard to do, but really try to ignore the tendency to close apps.

Android is designed from the ground-up to do the battery and RAM management for you. You just don't have to worry about it. However, from time to time, you there may a situation where an app may crash and inadvertently use up CPU cycles. When that happens though, you'll know right away as your battery life will be much worse. You can close those apps when that occurs.... but it's pretty rare.

Also I'd recommend investing in an extended battery if you hate watching the battery meter drop. They increased my average battery life from 1.5 days to about 4 days... very much worth it if you ask me!
