I've had my gs3 for 3 days now. I'm am being very open minded while I try to learn this new OS and so far I really like it but have a few questions. I'm hoping that you may be able to help me.
This first thing is group messaging. It allows me to send a group message but the replies come back as separate messages. Is there a fix to this yet? I did read that there are apps like gosms but they aren't really a good fix.
The next complaint I have is regarding sending video. It keeps saying "file too large" for a 29 second video. Is that just how it is? I did figure out that I can upload the video to you tube and send it that wayway but is that the best option?
When I'm connected to Wi-Fi it seems to lose connection to the google play store when the phone goes to sleep. But I already have "always" selected for the appropriate setting.
I feel like there's one more question but the super bowl has me distracted ATM. Go niners! Thanks for your time. I hope you guys have some solutions for me.
i use gosms chat for texting. group messages come in individually for a second and then it sends it to the group text. sort of a pain when there are a lot coming in in a short period of time.
as for sending videos, i think you are out of luck. it won't let me text even a short video so i am forced to send it as an email instead. i read that the iphone messaging automatically compresses the video files, whereas android does not, so therefore the file is too large to send.
not sure about your wifi issue, i've never had problems.
As previously mentioned you need do a 3rd party service or app for group messaging.
Personally I like GroupME from Skype. They have an app but it also works over SMS. Basically you set up a group which is assigned a free phone number (for those not using the app) and you just send or reply a SMS message to that number and it goes out to the group. Long as a person is able to send/receive SMS they are able to participate in the group. Best part is no one but the person setting up the group needs to actually set up an account with GroupME.
Thanks for the help guys! I'm not really in to using a 3rd party app for group messaging but I appreciate the advice. I guess I'll just wait for the update.
I was trying to send the video via text message and it wasn't working. I have since been able to upload the videos to youtube successfully and I think that is acceptable for the quality and length of the videos I am trying to send.
The wifi issue still seems to be there. I did clear data from Google play and the problem still exists. Next step would be a factory reset.
I tried taking a few pictures today and noticed what I think is terrible picture quality. Resolution is set to the best and same with other settings. I think tomorrow I need to take a trip back to the cell store to swap out for another gs3. My buddy has the same phone and he never had any of the problems that I'm having. I'm just wondering if I should do a factory reset before I return to the store? I was using touch pal keyboard and none of the changes I was making were actually taking place. I just uninstalled that and tried smart keyboard and I am very happy now with typing. Its just strange that nothing seems to be working properly. Maybe a corrupt file somewhere? I'm also getting about 10 he's of battery life. I need to put it on the charger about 5 pm to get through the night. Thanks again for your help.
Never did a group SMS, there are a hundred better ways to comm with groups these days.
I haven't sent a vid in ages, I can remember a year or two ago on another phone I had to attach the video from inside the messaging app, if I tried to attach it from the gallery it'd error out on file size. I think it was an HTC device. Worth a shot.
I've had good luck with Handscent when I had to use something other than stock. It's a little bloated though.
FWIW, my wife drools over the pics I pull out of mine compared to her iphone4S.
They both look ok to me, and my shutter speed is as fast or better than hers now.

My Theory is that if your group of friends is that serious about group chatting, then getting a third party app to do the job should not be an issue. For example, downloading an application called "WhatsApp". I only get group messages for people announcing things to a group of people. We don't message back and worth so I don't feel the same pain as you.
iphone users have it nice cause Apple has their own message client imessage. Having this app is similar. And if your group of friends really likes doing this, they shouldn't mind taking a minute to get this app.
If settings aren't going through I'd say something is definitely corrupted. Factory reset and see if that fixes your problems. If not then take the phone back.
As for the video messaging, there's no way around that if you're sending the video through MMS. The limits on MMS messaging are very restrictive and it's not really a technology that's been updated since the first ever cameraphones came out years ago. My advice would be to send videos though another platform or maybe upload them to Dropbox or YouTube and send the link. You can make YouTube videos private for sending to friends.
thanks again. i went to the phone store today and the guy that sold me the phone had his gs3 there also on the same network. we compared internet speeds and picture quality. my phone "won" in both categories. Maybe i'm just being a little too critical. The camera def. takes some blurry shots, but after playing with it non stop i think i figured it out a little better and realize that certain lighting situations just aren't good enough for taking a quality photo. I feel so much better about the phone today and i am starting to like it a lot more. The more i personalize it for my needs the more i like it. I really liked when i found out about the 'my files' app and was able to organize photos and videos from my old phone. now that i have separated everything i have one question.
Is there a way to choose a file specifically for videos so that when you are done taking the video it will auto save so the selected file? Right now all my newly taken pictures and videos go to the same folder. what i would like to do is seperate the pics and vids as they save to the phone. Know what i mean? I know how to move videos from the DCIM folder to the movie folder in the folder app. i'm just wondering if there is a way to get the phone to do it?
after I did the factory reset today i loaded up my contacts from gmail account and then installed the facebook app. In settings in the facebook app i chose sync with exhisting contacts (sync data only about friends already in Contacts). which sounds like the right option for me, but after i did that and chose sync, it brought all my contacts from facebook and made contacts for them on my phone. so i had to go and manually delete all the "facebook only" contacts so that i could have my original contacts linked with their facebook account. i'm thinking this has something to do with loading the contacts from my gmail account and then doing the sync. when i got the phone new i used easy sync to get the contacts off of my itunes account and put them on my new phone. Then i synced with facebook using the same options and everything worked fine. i'm just afraid that everytime i add more contacts and go to sync with facebook it will automatically sync the contacts that i've already deleted from my contact list that i don't want there. any suggestions? Thanks again for your patience. great help!
