Default Galaxy S3 MicroSD file problems?

Hey there. I recently purchased a Samsung Galaxy S3 for AT&T. My most recent phone was the Atrix 4g.
My main reason for posting here is that I'm having troubles using my S3 as a USB mass storage device, like I did on my Atrix. I have a 16gb microSD installed, same that I used in my Atrix. I use my phone as a USB for my CIS classes, and have folders and various office documents. On my Atrix I could simply open whatever file I wanted, and had no problems saving it to the SD card. With this S3 however, anything I open opens in [Read-only] mode, and I cannot save any new files to the SD card.
USB Debugging is checked in developer options. I haven't been able to find any solutions thus far, and came here in hopes you could help. The whole point of me using an SD card is to allow me to use my phone as a storage device for schoolwork, and one that is less misplace-able than a regular USB.

TL;DR Files on the SD card open as Read-Only in Windows 7, and files cannot be saved to the Phone storage or SD storage.

Any and all help is appreciated!

Google dropped USB Mass Storage as an option for Android ICS and newer phones -- which includes the SGS3.

You should be able to connect your phone to a PC using a USB cord and have it show up as a "device" with two "drive" -- phone and external.

You should then be able to drag and drop files between your PC and the phone "drives".

sorry to say samsung in all their wisdom have removed this feature from the s3 although there are some nice developers over at xda who have enabled this again BUT you need ROOT for this to work. Otherwise WAwood8 gave the best solution.
