Default Off to Florida with my GT-i9300, a few questions.

Hi, off on holiday to Orlando on Wednesday for a fortnight (YAY !) I have a couple of questions.

Roaming and data charges are not a huge issue, I'll pay and use both. My question is has any one any idea what network my Vodafone UK contract SIM will connect to in Florida ? And will I be able to get HSPDA (3G/3.5G) or am I stuck with GSM (2G/EDGE) ?

Looks like you should have good coverage of 3G just about everywhere in the Orlando area,as both T-Mobile & AT&T have the area blanketed in 3G/4G/4G LTE.

Just a quick update. Here on holiday connected to AT&T, full 3G.

That's the upside, Vodafone UK are charging me 1.35 a minute to make calls and 1.00 a minute to recieve them. Data costs a whacking amount :Mobile internet is 3/MB up to 5MB then 15 for each 5MB. So it's switched off! Texts cost 35p plus my standard network rate (12p). What a total ripoff! Thank heavens for decent free WIFI every where.

Hope you're enjoying your holiday, less the aggravation of the excessive phone charges. If most of your calls are coming from overseas, the only practical solution that comes to mind is some sort of WI-FI calling,or,other VOIP options.
Republic Wireless uses such for their phone service, but it's limited to their handsets & I'm not sure if it will connect for overseas calling.

republic wireless - No Contract Cell Phone Plans $19 per month

Perhaps a call to their customer service department is in order to see if this might fit the bill for you next trip stateside.

Just an FYI w/their phone:It'll be useless as a phone back in the UK,as it uses CDMA technology,& I don't believe there is any service in that neck of the woods that utilizes this.

Enjoy your stay in the States!

Everyone that needs me can Skype me. If they can't get me via Skype and they call, I'll not answer, divert is off so it'll ring out or more likely I'll cut them dead.

Or, for your next trip, if your phone is locked get it unlocked for around 10 and get a Pay-as-you-go SIM when you're there. I did this in Germany and got a data only deal for 1GB for EUR 10.00 -

Unfortunately, pay as you go SIM cards are much less common here in the US. As each carrier uses different frequencies (and only two use SIM cards at all), phone unlocking is pretty unknown, which leads to low demand.
