Question When might the S3 drop in price?

Hi,

I'll be upgrading my phone with the next couple of months. With the release of the Galaxy S4 on the 26th April, how long do you think it will take for the Galaxy S3 to drop in price?

The S3 is a phone that i'm interested in but it's just that little bit too expensive for me right now. So i'm wondering on whether i should hold out just that little bit longer. But if that little bit longer is too far down the road, i'm not sure whether it's worth the wait.

The price for S3s on contract already dropped for AT&T. They're $99 on contract now. ($30 for refurbished ones but those are sold out).
Sprint is offering $100 off the S3 if you port your number and start a new contract.
T-Mobile's is $70 when you first sign up with a plan.

It might take a few months (maybe towards the last quarter of this year) for it to go to $50 on contract.

Edit:
On Amazonwireless, the S3 is $20 for a new contract on verizon or $50 for a renewal.
$10 if youre a new customer for Sprint or $50 if you renew your contract.
And $10 on AT&T if you're an existing or new customer

Its constantly dropping but id imagine it will drop heavily on the day the s4 starts being sold in the same shop.
I think youre making a good choice gettin the s3 even though its nearly a year old. It has a LOT of life left in it

I'm not looking for the most top of the range phone out there, as i can't justify the money. I just want to get the best phone i can for the money that i'm willing to part with. Which if i upgraded now, would be the Galaxy S2, which is now just over 2 years old. As that is currently my ~upper limit to how much i want to spend.

For only $10, you can get a Galaxy S3 on AT&T from Amazonwireless.

Are you buying it "subsidised" or outright?

Either, which ever ends up working out to be the cheapest.

I live in the UK. We don't have Amazon wireless or AT&T.

S2 is still a great phone mate tbh, thats the phone i wanted when my wife surprised me with an s3 lol. Just dont want u kicking yourself in a couple of months. The s3 is a fair upgrade on the s2 whereas the s4 isnt such a jump from the s3 (imo).
If youre gona root and custom rom your phone then im sure the s2 will be supported in the developer community for a couple of years. Depends what youre gona use the phone for i suppose. The hardware on the s3 is beautiful for watching media, playin games etc

What's the best deal you've found for the S2 that you can afford? If you let us know that we might be able to find a good deal for you on the S3

A carrier subsidized GS3 can be had for as little as $20.00 on Amazon. $99.00 at Best Buy, which of course Best Buuy will price match.

Huh, guess you're right. Although it does say they will price match other items, they will not price match on contract phones.

Best Buy to make online price-matching policy permanent

I haven't seen this asked by others or even mentioned by the OP but have you checked with your provider/carrier to see what kind of price they'd be willing to offer you for the S3; especially given the fact you're in the UK and most of the great answers provided so far in this thread is US based?

Good point man ^^
Tip: tell them (if youre already on a contract and its due to finish) that youve shopped around and want the code to take your number to another network, theyl transfer you to the sales department and be SO nice to you
EDIT: good point woman lol

Local Walmart store has them for $38.77 or so for several of their carriers. They do not show prices online, but I called to verify and still available 2 days ago.

As he said, it'll be dropping a lot on the day S4 is released. As there's mainly software upgrade from S3 to S4 expect S3 to get most of them. Most of them, yes because they also want people to buy S4 otherwise they'd just buy cheap S3 and get all the features S4 has lol

Just a question for people living here in UK on contract.

I am on contract with 3 UK and I bought a white Galaxy S3 in September. Now that 4G LTE is available in my area, I wanted to trade my S3 for a 4G capable S3. I asked T-Mobile and Orange (together = EE) and EE (I didn't tell them I was on contract just that I have S3) and they said if I give my S3 back and pay an additional 100 they'll give me a 4G capable S3. I found it legit but as I was on contract and would probably not get 4G internet so I refused.

When 3 got "Ultrafast" internet, I asked them if I could do the same thing. They said no, when you sign a contract, it's a contract! And that if I do want to change, I can start a new contract or just cancel my current and start a new one. And that = Stupid!

So then I had to say bye to my 4G imaginations and excitement. I also asked if I could trade my White S3 (3G) for a Blue one (3G). They still said no.

I heard O2 let their customers upgrade from 3G to 4G. Which is what I call kind customer service more user friendly.

THIS WILL BE MY LAST EVER CONTRACT WITH 3 I'LL BE MOVING TO EE!

Does this happen with every carrier or just 3? lol

Like ScandaLeX mentioned, i had planned to ring the network/carrier provider to find out what deals they're prepared to offer me. I'm just doing my research, looking at specs, attempting to find design faults and see what peoples opinions are before ringing them up.

My one and only contract i've had with a phone was an impulse buy which i regret because i got ripped off for the phone i got. But i was really miffed off with Orange/T-mobile/EE that day. lol.

@Ghost10bxl - I'm confused with your reply. As i read it, it looks like you're saying the S3 will get the upgrades in one sentence and then the next, it appears like you're saying the S4 will get them. So just to clarify, in your opinion, will the S3 or the S4 have most of the software upgrades?
Also, i'm not sure how i feel at your post attempting to hijack the topic. Maybe copy and paste it in to a new topic?
Three is probably the network/carrier i hear the worst reviews about, so you're doing good getting away from them. Although i have no input to what you're actually asking about.

Im on 3 and its excelent but im on pre-pay, 15p/m for 300mins, 3000txt, unlimited data (n i use over 50Gb a month lol)
Id never get into another contract. If 3 clamp down on data use il look elsewhere.
The s3 will get most of the software "features" of the s4 but some of them are hardware dependant
S4 is only an upgrade if you need a bigger higher definition display and (maybe) better camera imo. The extra power isnt needed

What are the features you need? Is expandable memory necessary for you? If not, the best you can get in terms of value/quality is the Nexus 4, which costs 279 through the Play Store. I'd go with that route actually.

Another vote here for the Nexus 4, it's the phone I'd have if I didn't own an S3. Great price, great phone. Plus the Nexus Media importer app solves the expandable memory issue to a degree, great app.

I would have sold S3 to get Nexus 4 if it had expandable storage and removable battery.

I wouldn't care much about battery as you can get a portable charger so...

Another vote for Nexus 4

Sorry for that OP, It was only a quick question so I thought I might ask it? Sorry if you didn't like it.
Basically what I was trying to say is, that an upgrade from S3 to S4 is mainly software so expect most software features (from S4) to come to S3.

Some wouldn't come like someone said it requires hardware, I'd guess S Translator would be one, Hover feature, pictures with sounds etc.

Hopefully that explains that?

Think it's happening now...just got a new FREE S3 from Carphone Warehouse (300 mins, unlimited texts, 500Mb of data) on an O2 monthly-contract for 22-00 pcm. OK, it's a 2-year contract but it's still a free S3 for less money that I was paying for my old HTC Desire
