I know this won't matter to the average punter but to the geeks, techs and nerds the UK will not be getting the S4 which has Exynos' Octa eight-core processor. We'll be getting the 1.9GHz quad-core version instead.

Disappointing news.

Depends how much it costs to import one.

If it's too much then I'll be considering other phones allot more than I normally would.

Remember that the Exynos is 2 quad cores of different architectures. It's interesting, but at the moment we don't know its real world performance - might not be so different, or might differ in one parameter more than another (e.g. power use rather than processing speed). All still speculative at the moment.

Wonder which market will first actually see a Exynos sample - my impression is that all of the units people have handled so far are Qualcomm, though "impression" is the key word there.

Still no slouch though, I think it's most likely power use/battery life that would be affected.

I'd consider a different phone if my main use of the phone would be CAD or DVD ripping or rendering all sorts of nifty graphics Since I intend to use the phone as phone with mail and texting (occasionally films and games) I think I'll be fine on 1.9Ghz quad core.

My Fileserver is less powerful than that.

Reading the comments there I'm wondering whether cores are the new megapixels? The phrase "octa core" certainly seems to be doing its job in marketing terms, which has a risk of producing disaffected fans (assuming the general buying public will never know or care).

One person in the comments on that article wrote that "the screen and prcessor were the only things setting this above the S3, and now it's just the screen". Right, because a 1.4 GHz Exynos 4 and a 1.9 GHz Snapdragon 600 are basically the same, I mean they're both quad core...

So people want basically larger screens, more pixel, more ram, more cores, basicallty more cowbell without jeopardizing battery life

Just shows that you cannot please everyone (with technology anyway )

Edit: hang on, isn't the Galaxy just 4+4 cores and not 8 ? So technically it isn't even octacore as they say

Edit2: Wonder if the UK launch will be similar to the S3 LTE one .. LTE with QuadCore and 1.9Ghz for LTE provider (currently EE only) and "Octa" with 1.6Ghz international.

Yup.

It's the old problem that many people don't read past the headline. "Octa" is correct as that's the name of the device, but "octacore" is misleading. It's not a secret, but it's easy to pick up the wrong impression, and if you have a blog (or more formal media outlet) easy to pass it on.

If I've read it right, the "superior" exynos version isn't actually octacore, it's 4+4. Probably performance wise no better than snap Dragon, but should be better for battery.

Snap Dragon is rather heavily clocked so performance doesn't suffer. It's also 4g compatible, but the exynos isn't, and that's why all the uk carriers want the snap Dragon version. Presumably lots of devs will be able to tweak things so we can under clock a bit and improve the battery life anyway.

So all the discussion today on the techy sites is a lot of hot air, it's no biggy if we don't get exynos in the uk, and these "inferior" snap Dragon versions will still be mightily impressive AND 4g ready.

That's my take, for what it's worth

Dont forget, all this is about the S4 at LAUNCH. A couple of months later there will likely be an LTE version of the 4+4 Exynos 5 so it's not worth getting all worked up about it.

And yes, they did EXACTLY this for the S3 in the UK i9305 S3 LTE

As mentioned in the other thread, yes, it's not an octacore at all, it's a dual quadcore.

Also, the Snapdragon 600, unlike last year's S4 processor, doesn't contain an LTE modem, and does require a separate package for that.

Other Exynos processors have supported LTE. Why wouldn't their newest one?

Speaking as someone who's just moved to an S4 Pro-powered device (quad-core @1.5GHz), I can assure you that Qualcomms are not power-hungry. These big luscious 1080p screens otoh are.

This phone is turning out to be a disappointment. After all the song and dance (literally) about it having an 8 core processor it looks as if the UK is getting a 4 core version. What's the point of releasing a product, glorifying its specs and then go on to provide a watered down version of the final product to key markets? Terrible from Samsung.

Edit - OK just read that it seems the UK is getting both versions, although that doesn't seem to be definitive. Good for the UK I guess, what about the country where the product was launched? Bad luck for the US market I guess.
