Question S4 FM Radio

I notice in the review from GSM Arena that the S4 does not have a FM Radio. Would it be possible to install a backup radio from an HTC or any radio to the S4 like any app?

If it doesn't have the hardware in the phone to pick up FM signals then an app isn't going to do anything.

Otherwise any radio app (tune in) would suffice perfect enough

If you want to listen to MLB (or other sports perhaps?) you will need something that picks up the waves because of internet streaming exclusivity rights. If you aren't into sports though, the internet radio apps are fine.

Exactly. certain stations are not on the internet radio and places with bad coverage will be a problem.

Yeah, this is the one thing that disappoints me about the S4 (besides same design as last year). But after I see that 1080 Super Amoled screen I'll probably forget about it

No FM Radio? WHAT!? You cannot be serious. I'll assume the Exynos version does have one...

Maybe because the International S3, sporting the exynos quad core cpu had an FM radio, but North American variants with the Qualcomm chips didn't.

Sweet!! I'm probably in Exnyos territory, so hoping I can get one with an FM radio!

Edit:

But it's not showing up on the specs page:

FM radio requires a radio transceiver chip with that support. Unlike phone radios where modem support may be processor dependent, I'd be surprised to see this on one variant but not another.

Never say never, just saying.

This is me right here. Any phone I've had with built in FM radio may have been used twice; 3x's tops.

FM radio is so... old school ;-)

I get what you're saying though..

My guess is they just want you to stream everything now? As in Pandora etc

I have a few very good local stations, when played on FM, the battery lasts forever.

Oh well.

That's about 2 more times than I've opened it.

An fm broadcast radio would be cool though so I could easily play audio from my phone on any fm receiver.

Which is bad for me because of no longer having unlimited data, I would prefer to have a FM radio. But I will live without it.

Default No FM tuner means what?

Does this mean apps like TuneIn won't work, or is this a different type of service that doesn't rely on an FM signal? What exactly *won't* you be able to do on the S4 without an FM receiver/transmitter?

It just means that you won't be able to listen to FM radio, local broadcasts. You should be able to use any streaming apps just fine since they use the data connection.

It's an important feature for some people, though. Everyone has their own requirements.

The nice thing about an FM radio is less power drain and no data use (if on a cap).

Default Fm radio

I miss the fm radio on this handset! My question; is the radio hardware or software? I mean, can it be in a future update, or can it never be in the S4?

Notsure AT&T says the 4S has an FM radio, can someone confirm?

AT&T, on their product page, say that the S4 has a FM radio, "Requires use of headphones"..

can some one with an ATT version confirm that that is the case?

Thanks!

Default NO Radio Tuner - I'm bummed!!!

Anyone else really disappointed that there is NO RADIO TUNER on the S4???

I frequently used this option on my S3, now it's gone.

Is there any app or work around to get good old fashion radio on the S4?

Nope.

Btw - nothing personal - but I just realized that we had 5 short threads on this same subject, so I've merged them for easier access.

Bottom line to date - NO FM radio on either version of the SGS4.

Has anyone actually tried a radio app on the S4? I read in another forum that the LTE model had the hardware for FM radio, but nobody knew if the hardware had been wired in.

Could someone try downloading and installing the S2's stock radio app from here:
https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?hl=en_US&hl=en_US&key=0Ag43oj7rLQP4dENZcmhGN0Z Ua3pHSENVeXlqUm5vV0E&single=true&gid=0&output=html

Hope it works. I read somewhere a while back that someone found references to radio commands in the S4 files.

I tried it just to put an end to the subject....there is no hardware for an fm radio, so it will not work! Otherwise they would have given us the app to use it! Samsung ain't stupid enough to give hardware and not use it!

I decided to work around that issue and got a BT headset with the FM radio in it. Picked up the Sony-Ericsson Smart Wireless Headset (MW1). There is the MW-600 also.

I just wish Sony would release an app for Android to control the radio from the phone, much like they did with the Sony-Ericsson Aino and it's bundled MH-100 headset. Be even better if they used the same API as on the MH-100 so that my old MH-100 headset's radio can be used again since that headset as long outlasted the Aino.
