Are you talking data reception, or phone call reception? Not the same thing, since I can have no data, but phone calls and text works fine. As far as data though, I agree that the S3 is weak for 3G. Down right awful, IMO.

Great 4G device, but awful 3G/1.5G device. At least everywhere I have been.

You'll need some patience. Since the Verizon version does not release until May 30th, no one currently with the phone will be testing the specific CDMA based radios the Verizon unit will use.

On Sprint, so far so good as far as voice calls. This here in San Diego on a VERY old network. Way better the the HTC One was.

Whatever Sprint users are getting with reception is as close as we can get to knowing, but it still doesn't necessarily mean that the Verizon one will be the exact same. We'll have to wait until the end of May or beginning of June to know for sure.

I'm finding it excellent, although mine is different, its the Exynos Octa variant, so it comes with a Broadcom antenna, same with my GS3, so Rf was never an issue with it.

In terms of calls, its great, loud and clear, it also supports HD Voice so long as your network supports it.

Initial feedback as far as data radios is no better at best than the S3. Frustrating to have to both wait for VZW and also hope a 32gb is released to test myself.

In VZW defense on launch date, if supply is tight, makes no sense launching more and ticking folks off more. That said, no quarter if no 32.

I'm not worried about the data to be honest. I use Wi-Fi most of the time any way. But dropping calls all the time is getting on my last nerve! I love every thing about my GS3 except the phone part. I don't wanna upgrade to the S4 if its just as bad.

I've found reception to be less stable than my S2. It tends to drop out randomly where the S2 was always constant. I imagine it's because my S2 modem had been through a load of incremental updates to improve stability, whereas this one is just starting out. I'm sure devs will find kernel/modem tweaks to improve stability in a similar way.

That would be great if I wasn't afraid to root! Jail breaking a iPhone is easy but this, not so much.

I have the AT&T version of the phone with LTE in it. Everywhere I go there's LTE and it's a strong signal, very few places where there's no LTE. Voice quality is great and data performance is excellent.

Verizon huh? I should probably highlight the fact that my guide is for the i9505 version only, so make sure you have the i9505. I'm not sure what Verizon is.

This is why it's good to have a general International S4 discussion section rather than grouping all countries together, mods

Where do you live and reside. I'm in NYC and have the ONE and haven't really see LTE on my phone 24/7....Its like a toss up when I look at the phone with the ONE. My previous at&t device (iPhone 5) had LTE service pretty much where ever I went out here. Which is almaring to me in thinking that maybe the antenna is not as strong in the ONE because of the metal body?

That's possibly better discussed over in the One forum. The antennae in the One are parts of the metal body, not inside it.

Not really? I'm trying to get a gauge on which phone gets better antenna reception for LTE?

Ex- if I get a NYC person who says yea I was downtown yesterday with my S4 and have yet to switch back to 4G and have only been seeing the LTE indicator well then that's an alarm for me as I've been all over NYC as I usually am and have not seen as much LTE coverage as I usually do.

Sorry, I wasn't being clear .

I meant that in the One forum you'd get a better idea of whether your One's LTE reception is typical for that model. You're right of course that here is where you'll find out what is typical for the S4.

Exactly...I have a few people with the ONE that have all said they're LTE is not as strong as they're previous phone. All of them are coming of an iPhone so they really have nothing to gauge it against Android wise.

Myself included...My last long standing Android phone on at&t was the GS3 and honestly that was a few phones ago and don't really remember how the data reception was last year so I figured I'd reach out to S4 people seeing how they're reception is with they're new toy. I really love my ONE but honestly I'm seeing a lot of dead data pockets in and around NYC that I deff didn't see with the i5.

I briefly owned the One on AT&T. At my work which typically has problems with reception, I was able to get full bars of HSPA+ on the One. It never picked up LTE. Decided to switch to the S4 for several reasons. I get full bars of LTE coverage with speeds 30 download and 15 upload. Definitely improved. Calls sound great too.

But isn't your guide for how to root yor phone? In that case the forum is split for their carriers.

Rooting should take place in the rooting section.

Everything else is generally going to be about the same about the phone with everyday stuff.

Really huh! See this is what I'm thinking, maybe the metal body on the ONE is hurting the signal reception?

This is a big thing for me since I travel pretty much all over NYC and need to have a fairly strong signal.

Now I'm really at a crossroads because there's a lot of things I really really like on the ONE, even compared to S4 I would honestly rather have the ONE because of the sound alone...but what good is that if you just can't get a strong signal?

Here we go again.. lol

My wife's Verizon sg3 sucked for reception. Dropped calls all the time so she went back to her iPhone... My note 2 did not have the same problem.... Samsung radios have always been low on the pole (until the note 2 anyways... Hope that's sign of things to come)

Please take a look in the All Things Root sub-forum, where you'll find subs created for each of the existing variants. Your point?

For phone calls, I'm finding the GS4 to be excellent. Much better than anticipated, coming from the GN2.

From a data perspective, I did this speedtest at my BIL's house yesterday. They have VZW service (I'm newly on AT&T myself, coming from VZW) and where they have always had weak signals causing dropped and sketchy calls in their home, my calls were strong and clear. And I had 4/5 bars of strength too.

I've never seen data speeds that fast before. It blew away their wifi network speed, just below the LTE results.

Naturally, at my house, I only have HSPA speeds. But the phone calls are good. Just goes to show that every carrier has strong and weak spots in their coverage.

Sean it was good in most places besides the place we are currently living at now, but weaker than my iphone 5. We just sold our house and moved into an apartment until we find another house to buy. The signal here on AT&T was bad so I returned them and went back to Verizon until I find my new house and try AT&T again.

I'm thinking of just staying with Verizon now and picking up the GS4.

Back on topic, since everyone seems to agree that the GS4 is about the same as the GS3 I will be happy. My wife's GS3 generally has good signal so I should be happy with that.

Oh sorry, my point is that I linked mills23 to my guide in the All Things Root section, hence bypassing the forum navigation. So it's easy for someone to follow links to a guide for the wrong type of phone (i9500 vs i9505) if there's a general section here helping everyone.

I can see where this is going, i.e. "keep root discussion to the root forums and avoid confusion" but like in the SGS2 forum, these will overlap at times .
