Default Moving apps to SD card

Okay Im coming from a S2, i have always been able to move my apps to the sd card easily. But some people online are saying that you should get the 32 gb internal or more due to the fact you cannot move your apps to the sd card.

Am I missing something? Have they disabled the ability to move apps? Or are these people the ones missing something.

Thanks

This has been discussed recently over in this thread: Can someone tell me why we can't get a 32 or 64 gig phone?.

The bottom line is no, you can't. This feature was removed a couple of android versions ago.

One question. I dont want to interupt the fight over in that other thread so I will ask it here. Can apps move some of their data to the SD card still.

Example: My favorite game is pinball arcade. I have all the tables which gets sizable. On my S2 you can store the tables on the SD card. Is this the case on the S4?

Apps install data to sdcard0, which is the internal storage used for both apps and media. Perhaps a dev could write their install script so could ask what path to install to, but that could be an issue as well. Only practical answer beyond some exotic root effort for a few brave souls would be more internal storage.

how much space do you currently use? don't include media (pics, vids, music, etc) since that can go on sd card.

it's possible 16gb internal might still be more than enough for you...

But it is not 16gb, it is 9.7gb and about 500mb needs to be left alone so some apps work correctly and you can update apps in the market.

Effectively, the 16gb S4 is 9gb. The S4 for storage is similar to the G1, when correlating size of storage to apps size when the G1 launched. Catch is at least with the G1 you could do apps2sd. Not happening for most with the S4. Back then the G1 storage was fine for most, until a few months later.

Let's hope for 32gb models

Apps2SD has somewhat spoiled users.

It WAS needed back in the day when phones shipped with just 180MB of storage or so, but since then manufacturers have obviously taken heed of how users use their phones and for a while, now ship with a minimum of 16GB which is in itself it a huge hike in storage capacity.

It seems that now you have to look a little closer at how much storage you are likely to 'need' over the length of time you'll have your phone.

Wether you like it or not, smartphones are still evolving, and as users, so should we. Media can still be stored on SD, leaving room for apps in the internal storage. Ultimately, if you get a smartphone that doesn't have the capacity you need, it's all on you. Simply wait until higher capacity phones are available or include this as a 'pro' when your comparing suitable solutions for what you need. RIP Apps2SD.

Btw, there was a way to transfer some app data to SD and have it link over. (might have been link2sd) but you may need root for this.

The added issue here though is longevity.
First we are seeing new heavy 3D titles and large serious Apps being born daily.
You can not plan when you do not know what wonderful new title is about to hit our screens.
Next up we have the Developers who are continually improving and adding data to their titles.
Even if you plan today for an S4 16GB (remaining space on first boot = 9.62GB SIM Free or 8.12GB O2) there is no way you can be certain you will be able to run these same Apps in say 6 to 9 months time.

As an example SkySafari Pro has grown with it's associated data files from 760 to 925MB in the past few months.
Real Racing 3 has recently seen an update that has required more files added for extra races and cars.

In other words you can not plan accurately, it's all guess work.

In this case though, Samsung did plan ahead and offer 32 and 64gb models. It is the carriers who choose to stock them or not. The larger sizes are offered per Samsung for the Octa and Qualcomm chipsets.

Verizon as example could easily set the large sizes up for online orders only and allow the CUSTOMERS that actually PAY them money to decide. Kind of like thinking ahead for themselves.

Default S4 storage question

i have been thinking about getting the s4 16gb version on verizon but keep hearing that half the storage is already used up once out of the box. I haven't seen this with other phones and am looking at an explanation. What is using up that 8gb, bloatware, OS, etc?

Don't need a lot of storage space on my phone but have enough content where 8gb may be too little for my liking. Any help would be appreciated.

Mods will likely move this thread to consolidate similar questions, but:

The actual rom image without install is apparently over 1gb larger than the S3 image. Installed, this results in less storage than previous devices. Since Verizon tends to load even more bloat luv, it could see even less than the current 9.6gb the other versions have.

Seems companies like EA, Gameloft and others that on average put out 1.5gb games now would be lobbying the carriers to offer the larger size models.

Here is the definitive answer for you with the relevant numbers to explain why 16GB is, in reality, only 8.8GB...

Why does my 16GB Galaxy S4 only have 8.8GB of space?

Thanks that was helpful. A little disheartening that so much space is being used up out of the box. May have to for 32gb model depending on availabilty. Anyone know how much of the bloatware can be safely uninstalled after purchase? Also why can apps, movies, music not be stored on the sd card anymore? That doesn't seem to make sense.

I wouldn't say Samsung thought ahead by offering the larger 32 & 64GB models, not when they will only release these larger storage models in bulk purchase.
That rules it out for most SIM Free sellers like Clove, Handtek and all.
With little mark up against high bulk purchase requirements even the carriers will not sell them SIM free.

It annoyed me when I heard Samsung were shifting the blame back to the sellers. A lot of the smaller Online and high street smaller shops don't have the buying power to purchase bulk orders.
At least with Apple if you require a larger storage model they make them readily available to all.

User content such as movies and music can be stored on external memory just fine. It's only apps that cannot be installed there.
