Default Homescreen Won't Turn Off At Bottom Button

Hi Guys,

Iíve upset the settings on my Samsung Galaxy s4 and would like some assistance.

Hereís what happened. I was moving some apps and widgets about on the Home screen and when I was finished went to turn it off as normal at the button at the bottom of the phone. It wouldnít turn off. I tried one or two short presses Ė still no success.

I then tried a continues press and what happened was a black screen popped up and it seemed to show the last number of apps I was using, tap on it and it took you back to Home Screen. I can delete the apps here either by swipping them away or by putting them in the bin but that does no good.

It appears that the only way I can turn the phone off is by using the on/off button at the side of the phone. If I let the phone sit until The phone will turn on as normal with the bottom button.

Can anyone tell me how I can overcome this nag? Can I nominate one of the other screens to be the home screen to see what might happen.

If I deleted the Home Screen would another one take over automatically as the Home screen.

As always thanks for your help

Kevin

The bottom home button won't turn off the phone/screen. It will, however, wake the phone.

The screen that popped up by pressing and holding it is showing you what apps are sitting in your memory so that you can quickly access them (think open tabs on a browser or open applications on a computer). Swipping them away just closes them.

To delete an app you have to physically uninstall it through the play store or through the settings menu. Removing them from the home screen will keep them on the phone.

Hope that helps to answer your questions.

Kelmar thanks for your quick reply, but Iím confused.

First off Iíve only had the phone four days and Iím still trying to get to know it and into the bargain it is my first smartphone. I had a HTC Wildfire S and you donít want to know the trouble it gave me.

That said forgive me if Iím using the wrong terms.

OK letís say Iím setting an alarm, Iím finished. I press the button at the bottom and I get back to the home screen. Now if I press the bottom button I thought the screen went blank immediately but that is not happening now. As you say I can turn it off at the side button.

Maybe I was overexcited with my new phone that I thought it was going off at once with she short timeout. But still I never had that screen with the apps pop up before.

Again pardon if I sound stupid, but could you give me the A101 in what Iím doing?

No worries, we're all here to help. Unfortunately there are just sooooo many options and ways to do things with android that there really isn't an "A101" description to it (other than the owners manual).

Feel free to ask questions, we'll answer them as best we can.

This may be of some help. From what I can tell kah22, you are expecting the bottom button to turn off your screen. I hope I am right. The bottom button is known as the home button and will only take you back to your home screen. The button on the side is known as the power/wake/sleep button and will turn your screen off and on (make it go black), and if you hold it, it will turn the phone off and on competely.

If you want to change your home screen, you can do this by pressing the bottom (home) button, and then with two fingers, pinch the screen by swiping the two fingers towards each other against the screen in a pinching motion. You will see all your home screens together, and the one you want to see first when you press the bottom button can be set by tapping the little house icon above it.

I hope this helps.
