Might want to warn people that if they are patched with LOKI for recovery that they might want to hold off updating until deemed safe. Sprint got a similar update yesterday and it was clean, but since Verizon was locked up initially, this might destroy your exploit around the locked bootloader.

Default Verizon makes VRUAME7 available

Verizon has made the anticipated update (VRUAME7) available but not as an OTA update.

There is an explanation of how to do it at
http://support.verizonwireless.com/pdf/system_update/galaxys4-sua.pdf

BUT you will probably lose root if you do according to DROID life.
New Software Update VRUAME7 Available for Verizon’s Galaxy S4 Through Desktop Installer, Apps to SD Card Included – Droid Life

We have two SGS4s (one rooted and one not) so I updated the vanilla one.

I noticed there is a new entry in the About Phone section that says "Secure boot status" with "Type: Samsung" as the entry. That is not there in my rooted one.

With this update some apps can be moved to the SD card but I have not yet seen a complete list of all changes.

I am waiting until the "keeping root" issues get resolved before I update my second phone. Having root is more important to me than moving some apps.

Thanks for the update, I've already put up a PSA sticky in the Verizon Root Forum.

Does anyone know if this will be made into an OTA update or will this be the only way to update?

If you care about root or a bootloader patch, you may not want it to install.

It should give you an option to install now or later once the download completes

According to some folks on Twitter ( via Droid Life ) folks are starting to get OTA's on their Verizon S4's.

I got nothing so far.

Settings - More - About phone - Software update - Check - Download

That should do it, mine is downloading now. More convenient to get it going now since I'm on my speedy wifi.

After download is complete, "Software update available - Tap to install new software" will appear if you drag down the notification bar.

Nope. Still nothing. Not sure that would make a difference anyway, I think it is just a random thing. When you get it, you get it. Connection ( 4G , 3G , Wi-Fi ) doesn't really matter.

Default Beware of update!

I'm reading on other forums that this update has gone OTA. However, as of now, it appears that the update will:

1) Irreversibly kill root; and
2) Apparently also kills app-based hotspotting (i.e., FoxFi) - NOT TRUE, SEE BELOW

You've been warned - apply update at your own risk!

[UPDATE]:

I just installed the patch, and I am happy to let you all know that wifi tethering still works (at least using FoxFi). Many people on the FoxFi app page are complaining that the update killed it, but I can confirm it still works. However, when you activate hotspot, you will get an error page warning you that a hostspot subscription is required. When you get that page, simply hit the Home button and you will be good to go!

Of course any OTA will kill root

Until root is exploited within a day or 2

Verizon says one added feature is a WiFi on off toggle in notification panel, I can't find it.

The following capabilities have been added:
• <+| icon added to the icon glossary (indicates "more" items in the Notification Panel)
• Clear instruction in popup regarding Smart Scroll feature support
• Wi-Fi quick on/off toggle in Notification Panel
• Secure Boot status in About Phone in the Setting Menu
• Background will now dim when help tips display
• A new version of the SHealth application

Default S4 rooted and won't update

I have an S4 that is rooted but no custom ROM. When I downloaded the Verizon update it wouldn't install. The installation process stopped and it didn't make any changes. I won't bother with it after reading some posts about laggy phones and other issues.

If you have a custom recovery installed, you cannot take an OTA

That is certainly your choice, but remember that there are ALWAYS bad reviews for any and every phone/update. There are several bad reviews about the original OS that came with the S4 at launch, and there are several bad reviews about the previous OS update, and yes, there are several bad reviews about the current OS update.

There are of course good reviews about each of these as well.
Personally, I've found the current OS pretty stable (and found the previous version just as stable too) - haven't noticed any lag in either.

Everybody has different expectations, and so, their reviews vary. If things aren't working right, people will come to the forums and complain. If things are going great, a lot of people won't ever bother to come to the forums and say that it is working great!

Also, note that some of the people are using custom ROMs, and don't know how to flash the new updates correctly, thus causing problems for their updates. For example, you got lucky that the OTA update didn't apply over your rooted phone. If it had, it could have caused you problems, and you would probably add to the list of people stating that the new update sucks.

Default 207 apps?

I received and downloaded the update. As the phone is restarting from the Verizon screen it says "Android is upgrading... 207 apps! Is a good percentage of those apps bloatware or necessary files?

A good chunk of that is a combination of bloat and behind the scenes stuff that it is repopulating in the dalvik cache.
