Default S-View Cover - faulty or really just sh** ?

Colleague got the S-View cover and is appalled how bad it is. I had a look and it really is rubbish. I wonder if this is a faulty cover or a design flaw.

Basically it switches the screen off / funny stat view on, but it doesn't seem to close properly. Compared to the iPad Smart Cover, where the magnet is used to hold the cover shot, this one seems to be loose and if you close it, it slightly is lifted up and even turns the screen on every now and then, unless you put it on its front - which makes the whole S-View thing pretty redundant.

On "Three" in the UK, the cover is free with an S4, but retail it really isn't cheap and I just wonder if my colleague should send it back or cut his losses ?

Any guys here having a better / worse experience with it ?

i have the SView Cover and while it IS nice and I do like it, i agree that the build is not great. The "hinge" of the cover stretches over time and the front of the cover moves quite a bit. I have not had any problems with ripping or tearing, yet.

I had the SView and didn't like the fit and the fact that it provides no protection, so returned it. I have a friend who has one, and she said that after laying it face down for a couple of weeks, that the cover actually closes better.

There is a Spigen cover that uses the View feature and holds the cover closed with a latch. I seriously considered getting one, but went with the Otterbox Reflex instead. So I can't report on the Spigen from personal experience, but Amazon reviews are good.

I was going to buy one but thought better of it. One of my friends did make that mistake and, after using it for a couple of weeks, said he thought it had been a waste of money and offered to give it to me. I declined.

I own an iPad and I bought a Smart Cover for that. I like it because it's well made and importantly, stays neatly shut due to the magnets. If the S-View cover snapped shut and stayed shut, it might have been good but it doesn't so it isn't.

I also thought they were grossly over-priced considering what they are. All in all, the S-View cover is a miss not a hit.

It's 15 dollars on Amazon (less than the bumper case) but it does seem pointless. I had the flip cover for the S3 and stopped using it over time. It seems kind of pointless to me, for such a small screen.

In that case the price has dropped like a stone. They were 35 when the S4 came out. I wonder whether they are having trouble shifting them.

The one on Amazon is a knock-off of the case. It's even worst than the real thing.

I bought the regular one without the s-view as a tryout because I got a 50% off coupon from Samsung for registering my phone and the material and hinge are the same.

This thing is flimsy at best and will not stay closed unless placed face down. I cannot see spending $60 on the one with the window. Gonna check out the Spigen!

But it's sold through Samsung's profile...

As pointed out by m3incorp, if you keep it face down for couple of days, the spine will soften up and the cover will fit well.
I had no problem with mine, I just needed slightly better protection in case of drop, so I bought after market, much thicker and heavier, leather case with the s-view feature.

Yes but if you fold it back to type (like I'm doing now), it doesn't sit flat again right away. Unless you put it back face down.

Not saying its "unusable", Its just not worth $60!

I used the stock flip covers with my Note, S3, Note 2 and S4. They took around a month or two to settle down and soften up the spine. After that, they would fit very neatly, and wouldn't stick up. In fact, they would lay perfectly flat on the screen.

Anyway, I never buy these covers, in here they give them free with the phone purchase. Usually two or 3 different type of cases and screen protectors, so I don't feel bad by putting it away and getting some other, after market product.

There are really nice, leather or PU cases, far more solid and better looking, and a little locking system, for around 20 to 30$. Perhaps it will be a better choice than the Samsung's one.

Default *Fix* for S-View Not Laying Flat

OK - so this probably isn't the best 'fix', but it worked for me -- and this is after taking one back and trying on a few in the store with ALL OF THEM not completely closing.

Put the cover on...open it and flip the phone over...then take a finger along the spine and pull the cover out about 1mm. From the back, wedge your finger right beside the phone and then pull it out. You'll need to work your way down the spine, but should be able to see how far you pull it out with each tug.

** Be sure not to rip it! Use as much leverage as you can, and get as close to the spine as you can. **

Don't bitch to me if you rip it, I just figured this out (day 2) and hopefully I'll be happy with this cover.

You probably won't be.

Even when the cover closes, it is still useless. Unlike an iPad cover it does not stay shut and just flops about. It also gets in the way when you want to take photographs. At first, it seems like a neat idea but in practice it just isn't properly thought through.

Not sure what the OP meant about "it switches the screen off / funny stat view on" as that's a FEATURE of the S4. When you cover the screen it goes off (as a PC goes to "sleep"), presumably to save battery power. As for the S-screen, the stat window shows for a little while through the S-window. If you tap the power switch without opening the case, the stats show again. If you open the case, the screen wakes up.

I just got my second case for my S4. The first one did not ever stay closed and I had to keep a rubber band around the case. Not very elegant. Now, however, this one stays closed and is not too bad looking. I'd prefer it would be leather instead of the plastic but hey-ho, until I find a leather one that is similarly designed, it'll do. I've attached a photo.

Agreed that the S-View cover is a rip-off! I purchased this one off of Ebay for only $7.99 (with free shipping!) and I totally love it! I especially like the fact that it has a magnetic closing tab, and it is shipped from within the U.S. :-)

The S-View case WILL begin to close nicely after a few days. Until then, you will notice the front cover raised slightly when in the closed position.

However, bear in mind the S-View cover will interfere dramatically with any compass app you may use.
Also, the notification LED is not visible when shut. In fact, when shut, the LED is only enabled when charging and not at all for notifications.

Because of these 2 fundamental design flaws, I decided to ditch mine and put on a screen protector instead.

I bought one of the $15 knock offs on Amazon and I'm loving it. Just being able to wake/sleep with the flip of the cover is awesome. And then I can answer a call with a swipe without even having to flip the cover open, which keeps ear funk off the glass.
I'm not looking for the cover to snap closed or anything. But it does provide some measure of protection for the glass.

You make a very good point about the LED but I have found that the compass is already so wildly inaccurate that it couldn't get much worse.

First of all, it only works at all if the phone is absolutely level. Even a small variation makes the needle move a lot. In addition, if I rotate my phone slowly, the needle doesn't stay pointing to N.

I would say mine points closer to N than to S but is so hopelessly inaccurate (often more than 90 degrees out) that it would actually be dangerous to use it for navigation.

Actually, just meant the s-cover. I haven't any need for a compass, but installed one out of curiosity - yes... it's bollixed up.

Why would you care if the compass is enabled or not if you have the cover closed? As soon as you open the cover, it should kick in. Also, any activity for the LED goes out, with or without a cover, when the screen goes into sleep mode. Until it does, however, my S-view case shows notifications and more, regardless of whether it's charging. I've attached a rough photo (sorry couldn't get my scanner to work so I fudged with an advert of the case that I use).
