I've received one update for 4.2.2. A close friend within AT&T hinted without violating his NDA that 4.3 is not far off. In past years his info has been quite reliable.

My 2013 Nexus 7.2 came with 4.3, the differences are rather minor from a users standpoint in my experience. Had I not studied the two versions, frankly I wouldn't have noticed anything.

Take this for what it's worth, but most of the "info" sites are saying October for most carriers. I am with Verizon, so I expect to receive it sometime around October 2015. Unless they find some sort of bug or issue, then it will be later than that.

I'm probably not going to install the update, because it will then force me to use the new version of Google Maps, which will then force me to buy a decent GPS software product.

I probably should start a new thread, but I can only assume you don't like to be able to see your route as well, to check alternative routes, to know if there is traffic on your route when zoomed in, crashes (the only app I've ever had crash on the S4) and the loss of other features. About the only thing better about the new app is that you can see traffic on surrounding routes better.

I've been following this thread (381 posts by 221 authors) for about three weeks or so, and only one person has had anything positive to say about the new version.

I've been trying out Waze for the last week. I find that I like it a lot. I run it alongside my Garmin 1690 GPS (latest map updates) and find that Waze can sometimes route better than my Garmin.

I'm still getting used to Waze, but so far, I like it. It seems to know road changes quicker than the latest mapset from Garmin... by a wide margin. Garmin is often months behind in road changes... just the nature of the beast.

Waze is really terrific. I've been using it for some time, the more familiar I become with it, the better it gets.

I'm also on Verizon. Rooted stock. Worried a little about losing root.

Ive heard /read that depending on timing, some companies may skip the 4.3 update altogether for 4.4 bc that is being released. I think i read this on drippler.
Anyone else hear of this?
Also have read that the changes in 4.3 arent really that noticeable and in some cases worse for the ware.
@ Petrah, what do you think of the update so far?

You can get that JB 4.3 will have a locked bootloader and we'll have to wait weeks if not months for the hackers at XDA to unlock it. Basically, if you are a rooter, don't get your hopes up until 2014 for an unlocked 4.3 Just my gut feeling given how long it's taking the XDA folks to unlock the bootloader for VZW's ME7 firmware.

Only the I9505G has gotten the update to 4.3 thus far. Which is how Petrah got her update. Every other version is still on 4.2.2

Yep, we should get it this month mainly due to the need for GS4 to be fully compatible with the Galaxy Gear Watch like the Note 3, so I'm pretty sure Samsung are working around the clock to get the update out as I'm sure they want to sell as many Galaxy Gears as possible.

That's Samsung - how long it takes for the carrier to release their bloated versions is a whole different story

And whether we'll want to update (e.g. possibly be stuck with the new version of Google Maps) is another whole different story.

This has to be the least anticipated update of anything for me, ever.

Leaked version of it...seems pretty stable too. If you do flash it though, beware you possibly won't be able to downgrade if you don't like it!

I've moved to Waze and really like it. I don't bother with Google Maps any more. For now.

A few questions about Waze:

1. Is there a way to make it recognized as a navigation app so that when you open a Chrome to Phone address it will open Waze. Only about half the GPS programs seem to do that, and Waze isn't doing that for me.

2. Is there a way to toggle between a close up view and a view of your entire route with traffic information. I'm not seeing it can do that. In fact, I'm not seeing that it shows traffic at all, although it claims to take traffic into account.

We should probably start a new thread about Waze.

Honestly, I don't know about that. But I do get traffic condition reports. Sorry I am not knowledgeable enough about the app to help with your questions. Yet.

I have installed the leaked firmware and it has been running for 24 hrs and seems very fast and stable.
Very easy to install with Odin.

No... but your phone will need to be the GT-i9505, quad core, version.

See #1.2 of 18 Galaxy S4 models - know yours? to ascertain your version.

The firmware is Open Europe.

I thought so too - but Google re-downloads all apps automatically, Samsung restores wallpaper and texts and all that and when using different Launcher like Nova - you can restore the layout from backup ... so unless you have tons of games which don't save their save games in the cloud - you are back up in no time

So if I flash this firmware I lose, root and all applications that require it and access to custom roms and kernels.

That's if I want to keep my warranty which I do, so ill pass.

If you got root you are out of warranty already anyway ... You can only hope that if you ever need warranty, you still run a ROM which is supported by Triangle Away and your phone isn't dead and you can actually revert to stock to begin with

No your not, on previous bootloader without efuse you you could pretty much do as you please, so long as you used Triangle Away before shipping it back and flashed the stock rom.

Triangle away has worked on every rom I've tried, plus it's very easy to revert to stock.

Is there a way to avoid this update altogether?

Don't upgrade. These upgrades aren't forced. Either Kies or the update manager will prompt you asking to install the upgrade. Simply don't hit 'go' ... And / Or disable the update service altogether to avoid having to decline the updates constantly

This update and all future updates! Get used to the fact that Knox will be on all future firmware updates for the S4, S3 Note 2 and Note 3.

Therefore if your present firmware doesn't already contain Knox, and a lot do already, you should disable automatic OTA updates and refuse updates via Kies as you are now on the latest firmware there will ever be without Knox. No going to Android 4.3 or KitKat I'm afraid.

Knox does not present a problem or concern to anyone running stock firmware unless they wish to root their phone and flash custom firmwares and mods. In fact, it provides an added layer of security against malware.

Starting to roll out now

Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE (GT-I9505) receives official Android 4.3 update | SamMobile

Don't even attempt to ask when you got it for your provider / carrier / country - I don't know, no one does

Yes, Android 4.3 is being rolled out now. First to get it is Product code DBT, CSC code OXA, Germany, for the quad core, International version. Minority variants and carrier branded firmwares are anybodies guess as Gomjaba states. If you are carrier branded, then you should contact your carrier as it is they who have to add their bloatware and return it to Samsung for release.
