Default How Do I Fix my Camera (S4) Response Time ?

I 've read the other threads on the camera and its slow response when you press the shutter. What I haven't read is the solution.

I gave my mother my S3 yesterday and picked up the s4. The camera is horrible. Was there ever a solution to the slow response time?

If there wasn't, I'm returning the camera and going back to the S3.

Thanks in advance for the help.

My S4 takes pictures at least as fast as my wife's S3. Maybe you got a bad phone?

Its not the phone. There's a lot of threads going on about the same thing. My wife also has an S4 and has been complaining to me for a while about it. I never realized how bad it is until I just got my own. My S3 was much more responsive.

There is a gap in time from when you press the shutter and it actually snaps the picture. This takes place after the camera is focused.

Full disclosure, I'm a photographer so please don't ruin the thread with information that you think you might know about shutter/iso/aperture.

This has nothing to do with that. I'm just looking for a solution. I might return the phone and go back to the S3 or an I-phone if there is no remedy.

Here's a thread that talks about the same thing.
Galaxy S4 camera issues (shutter lag, etc) - xda-developers

That thread sort of turned into a flame war. I'm not looking to do that, I just want a quicker responding camera.

I agree with the camera lag as well. My iPad Mini takes faster auto-focus and repetitive shots. Don't even mention the iPhone 5s I returned, that now had a really good cellphone camera.

I try to make sure all the 'auto' stuff is turned off, and save to the internal memory. I have a class 10 as external, but I am thinking the internal should be faster.

Since you are a professional photographer I won't bore you about: shutter speed/iso/aperture and so on. But, you are talking about a phone that takes pictures as well as a multitude of other things. With that being said if it's pictures you want just use your camera.

No one posts on a forum looking for an answer like that. It does nothing to solve a malfunctioning device.

the issue (or I guess biggest surprise) is that the camera on the S3 is superior to the camera on the S4. if I knew that, id probably not have gone with the S4. i just assumed it was a superior product since it is an upgrade and chose it for the better camera.

yes..i know the camera on the S4 has more "features". but that's about it. megapixels mean nothing to me.

the problem is not the end of the world . if there is no fix i'm going to go with the i-phone or maybe go back to another S3. I was just hoping to find a solution since I like everything about the S4 better....esp the screen size.

the link I provided explains the issue far more in depth than I did here, but its the same issue. my issue has nothing to do with shutter speed it has more to do with response time.

when you press the camera button on the S3 it takes the picture. when you press the camera button on the S4 it waits a second and then takes the picture. if you did not go from the S3 to the S4 you probably don't even notice. if you had an S3 you want to cry.

Just wondering if you would get the same delay on, say, A Better Camera, free from the Play Store. If not, it could be down to your particular firmware on your model of phone. See, 23 Galaxy S4 models - know yours?

I tried it (a better camera) on burst mode and I guess it "might "be a little faster. most 3rd party solutions still lag on the shutter. even camera awesome which was developed by smug mug.....the hosting company for my photo site.

Just to clarify, which model of Galaxy S4 do you have and what firmware is it on?

Thanks! You have a Verizon handset. The *#1234# feature is just one of the many things that is disabled by the carrier on their firmware I'm afraid. AFAIK, Verizon have not updated to KitKat, Android 4.4.2, yet. I therefore cannot say if this has been fixed in their update. What may interest you though, is the free app from the Play Store... CamSpeed.

"Description
CamSpeed is a camera performance benchmark for mobile devices.
CamSpeed tests the performance of your mobile camera and publishes the results to the Sofica benchmarking database. You can compare the performance of your device to other users' devices and share the results on social networking sites.
"

I'm sorry, I do not know what else to suggest as I am a, "Happy Snappy", and my camera on my firmware seems very quick.

EDIT

I don't know if these screenshots are of any use to you...

This is the top 10 ranking phones according to CamSpeed. The Galaxy S3 does indeed come out well

Ganginwood, I also have a VZW S4 so I tried the CamSpeed app to see how yours compares to mine. Please post your numbers.

I propped mine up so I would have no shake.

Rank 357
Score 410
Score with Flash 303

Normal Light

The comparison screen shows me at Rank 338 and Score 410. I don't know why there are different numbers there than on the text.

I was told a couple weeks ago when I got my VZW GS4 that I have 30 days to return the phone with a $45 restocking fee and my mail in rebate would be voided (ie, they would cancel it before it got mailed out to me).

We have one of each, both on Sprint. No crying here. Maybe it's because we mostly use them outside in daylight for taking pictures, but the S4 performs great for me. And the picture quality from the S4 is far superior.

what exactly is this testing? i have the results but they mean nothing to me. i would argue that it is by no means a superior camera if it can't capture what you want it to.

here's a test I need someone to do.....

go outside or in good light and have someone stand in front of the camera and make facial expressions. tell me if what you captured is EXACTLY the expression the person was making when you pressed the shutter.

i've done this on four S4's yesterday and not one of them captured what i wanted it to. it was 1/2 to 3/4 of a second off.

my S3 would nail this every time. exactly what the 21 page discussion was about in the link I provided above.

I agree with you. The S3 has a much superior camera compared to the S4.
Most of my photos are blurry unless in excellent lighting conditions.

You may find small improvements trying different camera software, but not great. As well as the stock camera I also have A Better Camera installed. May be worth trying.

Personally, I think we are stuck with it. The only real hope is a camera firmware update, but I wouldn't be too optimistic about that neither.

I was hoping I just have a bad phone and could return it for a new one. I really do like the phone. But after using my wife's S4 and friends.... I've realized that their phones are plagued with the same issue.

I can easily see where if you did not own an S3 why you might think the S4 is a better product. But for those that have.....

I thinkthe fact that the S3 ranks number 8 overall and my S4 is coming in at 312 down the list, says it all. We can only but hope that the camera firmware for the S5 is better and that it is either used in the future S4 firmware updates or, for rooted users, can be ported across.

It doesn't matter to me what the units of the numbers are. The idea is that if the app is consistent, that it would let you know if you have defective hardware. We've concluded, thanks to that app, that you do not.

So I just took some pictures of my daughter making goofy faces and moving around and I had no lag and the pictures were pretty sharp in low to medium light. (I used sports mode) The one thing that I have noticed with the camera is the auto mode isn't the best choice for all pictures and depending on the lighting and scenery, sometimes takes longer to focus. So I have found in low lighting situations, I have to change shoting mode and adjust some of the other settings too.

so it takes the picture the split second your hand is on the shutter? I have yet to use an S4 that does this.

i guess I can go back to the Verizon store and demo 5-10 phones until they bring out the one that works and I'll exchange it for that one. That would be the ideal solution

you should try a third party camera app. i used the paid version of camera zoom fx and it works great on my end. fast response time also.

it doesn't matter what app you have. i believe they all use the same camera sensor and auto-focus system.

i have too many camera apps to even bother listing.

I am sorry i have to disagree. Some apps work better with the system. I have not issue with the camera using the camera zoom fx.

The way I see it is like this. Lets say you decide to make a camera app to use on android. You will take your time with it, and make sure its perfect. Its your creation. Whereas these big companies just push more apps out aka facebook not matter the problems are. They just want to get them out there.

Like I stated before some apps work alot better than the system apps because they are made and tested for that phone. I dont have very little delay using the camera zoom fx. I supported them since the start.

I have used camera fx. The app I have used most is Camera Awesome. It was developed by a the same photography company I use to host my photo website (Smugmug). While in the past this seemed to be my favorite option for the S3, it has the same issue on my S4.

I think I'm going back to Verizon and just asking them to bring out 10 S4's. I'll take the one that I feel works best or .....just switch over to the iphone.

Try this. If you are in developement options go down to where it shows windows animation scales and change to 1.5x, transistion scales to 1.5x, and animation duration scale to 1.5x. i had a few friends say they noticed a delay in the camera app. they changed it and they said there is no issues. they are also using camera zoom fx

Wouldn't you want to set those three to OFF? I think 1.5 is the default. Setting them all to OFF makes a big difference in overall app speeds.

There is a lag on my UK S4. I would estimate it is just less than a second between pressing the button and taking the photograph. Sometimes that delay doesn't really matter but there have been numerous occasions when I have tried to take photographs of children or animals and I've missed the shot because of the delay.

It is a little frustrating but if I want proper photographs, I use my DSLR.

i would say the reason its out of focus is because you selected the focus area and pressed the shutter. however, the computer has the original focus area locked and in the 1/2 second delay the subject moved out of the focus area. i still haven't gotten to my store to replace the phone but it is on my agenda.

Idk maybe its just me, but mine was at 1X and I raised them up both to 1.5 and I see a greater and better difference.

I would have thought that if anything, decreasing the animation scale, not increasing it, would have a more beneficial affect on the shutter speed.

the issue is not the shutter speed. shutter speed is measured by the amount of time in between when the shutter opens and closes, but the measurement does not start until the shutter is actually open and ends when it is finally closed.

the S4's issue is the the amount of time it takes the shutter to open once you actually press the "button"

sort of pre-shutter speed.

Here's the final verdict.....

I went back to Verizon to try out other S4's. Every single one had the gap in time with the camera button. They told me this is just how the camera was made.

Very disappointed.

I believe the term you are looking for is Reaction Time, not shutter speed. Reaction Time is the amount of time it takes for the shutter to open once instructed to do so.

I know what you meant and that's what I was referring to!
