Default S5 Battery Gripe

Hi All,

Just throwing this one out there but has anybody noticed the battery on their new S5 is not as great as the reviews all believe?

I got mine on Thursday morning in Switzerland. It's the European model - and I brought it home to the UK.

Charged it up fully, then let it discharge which took about 15 hours (though eight of those were in bed). Then yesterday, I charged it from 2% up to 100% at about 1pm. It was down to 20% by 10pm. Obviously, I'm using it a fair bit but no more than the other reviewers seem to imply.

I have it linked to my Gear 2 Neo and wonder if that's the cause. But I can't see how it would be as GSAM reckons Bluetooth is low usage and also my friend is using his connected to the Gear 2 and tells me yesterday, he had 90 mins of Netflix, Facebook and general playing before he got down to 90%. GSAM tells me that the kernel is the biggest user.

I vaguely seem to remember the S3 having a similar battery drain at first and not being sure what it was and it settled down eventually - but I'd be interested to hear your thoughts and experiences. By the way, I have Power Saving ON here too!

As a guide, it is now down to 93% after about an hour off charge with the screen having barely been on.

Default Yikes :-(

It definitely appears to be my kernel that's doing it - but what? And how can I stop? See attached screenshots I just took.. Hope someone can help

Thumbs down Battery Issues

I have had my phone since Thursday 4/10 and I have kept it plugged in and charging while I setup and familiarize myself with it.

I can not keep the battery charged while in use - this morning from 100% and a sync with contacts dropped it by 15% even while plugged into the wall outlet.

Yesterday I made 2 calls average time 11 minutes each with battery power save mode on. I left home with 98% at 6 am and by noon i was down to 40%.

Seems we need an update to the OS for battery management?

sync drains a lot of juice. also it take about 5 cycles to remind the lithium battery to kick into gear.

I noticed last night that mine was set to Global. I changed it to LTE/CDMA. That will definitely help to drain the battery a bit more than usual.

We'll see how today goes.

For the kernel usage, try looking at wakelocks (e.g. total time held awake). That might give more clues as to which of those many kernel processes is responsible.

I did a full factory reset yesterday and it seems to be the same. Nor dreadful but just not add great as all the reviewers seem to say. Maybe it will settle down after a few days

I have been using mine all morning and then when it got down to about 18% I put it on the charger. I pulled it off the charger about 8pm tonight and used it for about 6-7 hours and it was still around 75%. Now the last 2 hours I was watching the TV and not using the phone as much (although I did use it as the remote for my entertainment system...love that feature)...but the first 5 hours I was on it constantly. So far I think it's working as advertised.

did you find that it took a few charge cycles to get it that way? Or was it always working perfectly out of the box?

When I first got the phone it only had about 30-40% charge and it quickly went down to about 20% in just about 2 hours. After I charged it back to full...it seemed to do great. I will keep an eye on it and see if anything changes after a few days of use.

Would you mind installing GSAM and seeing if you have the big kernel usage I do please? Only if you don't mind. It is a free app. Thanks a lot

I'm on day 3 of my GS5 and it's doing better. The first day it was at 56% when I got it and it sucked down quick. I charged it to 90 something and it sucked down quick but not all the way. Yesterday I used it about my normal amount and it did fine - I think it only went down to 70-something. Today I plan to use it my normal amount PLUS link it up to my gopro and possibly a map tracking app so it'll be put to the test. We'll see

I think the battery on the S5 is weak!

Drains fast...however, it does charge very fast.

I'm hopping this battery improves over time. I got the phone yesterday from BB. So only had it for a day. Carrier is Sprint.

Good phone overall. I'm coming from the S2.

Okay today I used it my "normal" amount - texting, music, phone, etc. I am not a big phone talker but I am a big texter and web browser and photo taker. I also used my GoPro and I connect it to my phone so I can see the screen. Had the phone disconnected since 8am and it's now 6:30pm. It's down to 79%. I'd say that's pretty good..........

I got mine Friday afternoon and ran the battery completely dead.

I plugged it in at night and unplugged it Saturday morning once I was up and around. I have been using it - setting it up, looking around, browsing the internet, texting, calling, Flipboard, downloading new apps, etc - and as of right now I am at 56%.

For me that is great. WAY better than my S4. I do not think I will have to plug it in until sometime Monday.

I'm actually having the opposite "problem" - I need the battery to die down so it could "condition" - I think I will not charge it tonight and go tomorrow and see how it does. I can't remember the last time a single charge lasted me 2 days....

Default Worst android phone on battery ever.

Between the wife and I we have had about 10 android phones, the early ones were bad but this new S5 is about the worst. I set up this S5 the exact same apps and widgets that I had on my S4. With the S4 I could run 21 hours and be sitting on about 50-60%. This S5 is down to 8% in under 16 hours, I did no web browsing, only 5 two minute phone calls. I sure hope this gets better or they find a fix because this is not going to work with this much power drain.

I didn't charge mine overnight...as I was down to just 70% yesterday after my normal usage - connecting via BT in car, texting, phone call, connecting to my GOPRO, pictures, etc. Today I used it the same - car BT, texting, photos, etc. (no gopro). It went down to 16% so I will be charging tonight.

Well it sounds like some are getting good batteries and some are getting bad ones or some phones have a bad draw. Mine just seems to burn through the battery twice as fast as my S4. Other than bad battery drain no other complaints on the S5.

Over the weekend, I had charged the phone up to about 90%. I used it a bit and then fell asleep without charging it. I went all day Sunday without charging. Other than the 7 hours of sleep...I used the phone a good portion of the day...granted a lot of that was on Wifi and not over the 4G LTE. The phone lasted 23 hours and dropped down to about 16% when I finally put it back on the charger before going to bed. Again...I used the phone all day long. I am very happy with my battery life.

Today at work, I used the phone a little bit...but not a ton. The phone was at 100% when I pulled it off the charger. It's been about 9 hours since I pulled the phone off the charger and my phone sits at 83% charge. Today was a mix of Wifi and 4G LTE...probably about 50-50. Again though...I pretty much just used the phone to check the occasional e-mail and a couple social networks and text a couple friends. I didn't use it nearly as much as Sunday.

my experience has been that I am getting great battery time, for example, it's been around 16 hours of moderate use, even some GPS navigation and I still have 68%

I wonder why there is so much disparity between great reports and terrible ones. Hmm.

I would need 4 batteries to last that long. Mine burns through the battery twice as fast as my S4.

Burning twice faster than S4 doesn't sound normal at all. Can you post your battery stats screen to see what's going on?

You can try factory reset without installing any apps and see how it goes. If it's still the same, you probably got a lemon and needs to exchange it.

Well battery life will easily last a full day but I would like to have a spare instead of hooking up a charger.

One more update. I used my phone a lot today. Was on it with WiFi...and on 4G LTE data. Only made a couple calls, but data wise...I used it a lot throughout the day. After 9 hours...I am at 66% battery left.

The photos below are from my 2nd day of use of the Galaxy S5. I played 2-3 games throughout the day. I used a good amount of wifi/4g and whatever I wanted.

I know that battery life is a hard thing to be objective about because nowadays it is all about customization and what gadgets are working.

This is exactly my normal daily consumption. With the Galaxy S3 I would have to charge it every 8-9hs.

The 2 big gaps on the battery screen are at night while sleeping.

Small improvement yesterday I was able to make it 21 hours but only one short phone call and four pictures taken & uploaded to google+. Still twice the power consumption and twice the needed recharge time as my S4.

If your screen isn't your biggest consumer of battery, there is something wrong.

Mine has a battery comparable to my iPhone 4. Used plex and did some internet browsing for 4.5 hours last night, started at 75%, went down to 23% by the end of it. Fell asleep for 10 hours (the flu is fun), woke up with it at 10%. I'm going to try letting it run down to 0% from 100% five times to see if that helps. Here are my battery stats.

I have no gripes with the battery so far. I'm at just over 13 hours off the charger and still at 54% under normal (for me) useage. I did notice today that the Verizon Cloud settings were defaulted to backup hourly, so I turned that off. I'll be interested to see if that boosts my battery life even more.

I think we should all give the battery a half dozen cycles before we decide.

I know when I was shopping for an extended battery for my S4, just about every site had the same disclaimer, to let the battery run several cycles before the phone syncs accurately with the usage.

The first two days the battery ran down pretty quickly but I charged it Sunday night and 48 hours later I had 30% left. Not all that bad. It seems to be getting better. Not a heavy user.

Yesterday I made 2 calls average time 11 minutes each with battery power save mode on. I left home with 98% at 6 am and by noon i was down to 40%.

Seems we need an update to the OS for battery management?
This battery will not make a full day!

Specmanship and bull $#\€ marketing lied again.

I expect or need 8 hours plus and this so far Is a 4 to 6 hour phone. Bottom line you need the high watt brick/plug and cable for a wall charge with you. It barely charges on the USB cable to my late as a back up.

I am disappointed.

I think for whats expected on a smartphone, its not bad. I can make it my whole day,16 hours about 10 hours no wifi and still have 20 some % left. Old Galaxy Nexus was always on the charger.

Thats with random social networking, calls and texts, about an hour streaming music, and multiple 2-5 min sessions of Clash of Clans (damn clan wars!)

I unplugged my phone from the charger Tuesday morning. Used it all Tuesday and Wednesday. Many phone calls, texting, took pics, internet, flipboard etc, downloaded updates, and played around with the settings.

Now on Thursday morning I am at 10%. With my S4 and the amount of usage I do not think I would have had 10% left Wednesday morning.

YMMV

Seeing some posts here and thinking "PUSH" for exchange has It running constantly on this device as top memory and consumer. May try to set down lower or kill it for a while.

Good idea. I'm going to give that a try. I think you get a lot of screen on time if you keep the screen on. But if you don't and keep waking it, that seems to have an impact

My first day of usage gave me horrible battery results. After 10 hours of phone usage (maybe less), on the first day, it was under 30% when I plugged it into the charger when I went to bed.

At the end of each day (I got the phone on April 11), the battery remaining % keeps improving. Last night, I had around 50 or 60% battery left.

I think this is an Android thing. Doesn't the OS effectively "learn" as it goes on and shuts down some tasks that aren't being used, etc, etc...? I'm wondering if that's helping to give us (or at least some of us) better battery performance?

In theory, That sounds like a good one. But that wouldn't explain why some people have amazing life out of the box.
Is definitely to do with the phones rather than the batteries. I got a new battery yesterday and it is no better. Not worse. Just the same as the one is been using for a week

Mine went down to 59% after 5 hours of light usage today (no more than 30 minutes of music, played a 1 minute facebook video over wifi twice, checked the time a couple times). Currently in the process of doing the third battery cycle.

I suspect there is disparity between battery usage mileage because there are different takes on light vs heavy usage. Battery usage stats will tell the story better. 3 days of not using a phone defeats the purpose of having it.

Take me for instance. I'm currently sitting at 50'ish % after 15 1/2 hours.

However, 1hr 35min with the screen on (full brightness.... Accident), android OS awake for 1hr 19min, android system for 1hr 30 mins.

The phone did stay in a metal lock box for 10 hrs today, so it spent a lot,of time searching for a signal.

So by my estimate, I only really had about 1 1/2 hours of continuous use.
