Just don't get too excited based on emails or comments from some low level tech. or an over-excited fanboi.
Understand this: There is NO OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT FROM SAMSUNG. They have made official announcements about it for the Galaxy S, but NOT the Spica.
There are even doubts that the ARM processor in the Spica is sufficient for Flash, which is a key selling point in 2.2.
If they do decide to put out an upgrade to the Spica, good, but as I said, until they either SAY they are going to do it through an official channel, or actually do it, I am not holding my breath.
I suggest you don't get too excited yet.
Frankly, if they do upgrade it, I'll install it quick enough to sell this legacy phone and move onto something else.
I think Samsung's customer support is a pile of f***ing sh*t.
" They’ve [Samsung] advised us due to the limited internal storage of the device that Portal cannot be upgraded to the full Froyo version. In fact as it stands Samsung will not be relasing Foryo for Portal [Spica] for any operator."
Well if this is true.. a lot of angry customers for Samsung.
why will there be a lot of angry customers samsung have never said that the galaxy lite/spica/pootal was getting 2.2
im not angry at samsung for not updating to 2.2 i was at t mobile and still am thats why i gave my pootal to my girl friend..the bit that did it for me was when they said that the 2.1 update was not benaffical to our customers what a joke but now they have released 2.1 5 month behind every body else
i no its called the portal the reason i call it the pootal is because its the way t moblie has treated its customers not a the phone being poo as its a good phone

because every other company is updating theirs. Plus if Dream can get an update then Spica can too
Wrong. New PC Studio and Kies are 2 separate suites. Mine came shipped with NPC but it wouldn't detect my phone, and after digging around Samsung's site I found the explanation that I must use Kies. Both suites can be downloaded from their site. Kies does detect my phone but does not detect the modem, so still can't tether.

Follow my root guide, and by default it installs tethering software.

New here, obviously. There's just a few things I want to know...
I've been reading through the posts and I'm seeing 'Yay! 2.2!' and 'No. No 2.2 (haha)'
So what's the story with the Spica and Android 2.2? Is it coming or not or is noone certain yet?
Also I've noticed some people have been waiting quite a while for this firmware update. I'm new to the Android system so I'm asking: what's so special about this update (apart from Flash)? I know I could look up a website and get some opinionless stock answer but I want to know what you guys think. Should I be disappointed if the Spica never gets 2.2? What does the new update offer and why are Samsung and alike being so vague about it?
It's a lot of questions but I'm just as clueless now of what to think than I was before reading this thread.
What's apparent is that some low level nobody at an Irish carrier told someone they'd be upgrading it (and on another thread, a low level tech in Dubai).
But on the Three blog, talking about their "branded" Spica, the Portal, they stated:
"Thanks for your post. Samdroid is an unofficial version of Froyo, not released by Samsung. They’ve advised us due to the limited internal storage of the device that Portal cannot be upgraded to the full Froyo version. In fact as it stands Samsung will not be relasing Foryo for Portal for any operator."
Which is a lot more specific and says they've actually spoken to Samsung.
You can draw your own conclusions, but this sounds to me as if they want us all to buy Galaxy S's.
Initially Samsung Mobile Singapore stated in their fb page (Samsung Mobile Singapore | Facebook) that they will be updating spica to 2.2, but when I dropped them a message again 2 weeks ago, they said that it won't be coming out. Boo!
The whole page's on Samsung Galaxy S.
well, we won't die without 2.2. 2.1 is quite a good update from 1.5 (better battery life, bluetooth etc.) but if I am not wrong, 2.2 supports stuff like wi-fi hotspots & tethering (older versions do it with apps), apps2sd (= able to install more apps!) and faster performance.
Or at least, these are the three reasons I have for wanting to upgrade to 2.2.
there's adobe flash support too, but not too important for me :P
We sholud ask Samsung for an official statement on their website. They should say only:
Yes, Froyo for Spica will be available officially, OR
No, Spica won't get 2.2 upgrade.
This is it, there would be no more questions about it.
Is there a reason, why not to ask them? Seriously. I'm hunting every piece of infos about Spica&Froyo, and they could solve our problem with a single sentence, on their website

No ringtones, no voice. That's going to be one very useful telephone, isn't it.
