Have you turned on "notifications" in the panel that opens up when you the tap the clock?

The "notification" icon should be green and not grey

Eventually solved.....totally weird, but you have to change the notification sound setting within the applicable APP, i.e. go into EMAIL > SETTINGS.
This is bad in ANDROID in my opinion, as should be doable from SETTINGS > SOUNDS.
