Has anyone successfully upgraded their firmware to 2.3.6?
I have tried via Kies but it fails.
If I remove battery and reboot it comes back to normal but still 2.3.5
I have read some horror stories on the web where people have tried upgrade and were left with an unusable phone that wont boot.
I am nervous of carrying on but as most posts tend to be about problems and not successes, I wondered what the success rate of the firmware upgrade is?
Hi
Got my Galaxy W last week on O2 and it came with Gingerbread 2.3.5.
I downloaded and installed Kies ver 2.1.0.11112_41 on my laptop.
It took me three attempts to successfully upgrade to 2.3.6.
The first attempt failed due to the phone not being fully charged, the second failed due to the phone not reconnecting with the laptop and the third attempt worked perfectly and my phone is operating as it should.
I have used Keis to transfer contacts list, photos and videos without any problems so far.
i am new to android environment,
i have galaxy w, i would like to install 2.3.6 on it, cos i have a problem with GPS, it always tell "your current location is temporarily unavailable". and i tried to solve this problem, and all tries was worthless
do u advice to upgrade??
and how can i upgrade, cos i do not have any idea about how is upgrading
maalmasri,
Make sure your phone is charged and best connected via wifi or if not have a good 3G signal.
From main menu, press menu (bottom left next to the home button)
select "settings"
scroll to bottom and select "about phone"
select "software update"
select "update"
Then follow the instructions..
Make sure you do not switch off the phone and be patient because it does take a long time, even with a fast internet connection.
I can't help you any further as my phone is now up to date and so cannot replicate the procedure.
Just be patient and wait for it to re-boot itsself a couple of times.
Once it is showing the normal startup screen and stays on it for a while, then try to use the phone and see if it upgraded.
You can check by looking at "Android Version" on the "about phone" screen.
no need to do it with kies. Just go : applications/settings/about phone and click the first on the list which is "Software Update. In that menu check the "Wi-Fi only" and then click Update while you re connected a Wireless internet point. Mine updated it in just 1 minute and now i m using 2.3.6
Whats the difference between android ver 2.3.5 and 2.3.6 ? Any new things?
The main thing for me was the fix to the problem where you had to constantly resend text messages. When the phone connected to a new mast, the first text you sent failed and required resending. Since upgrading to 2.3.6 I have not suffered this problem.
I think most of the improvements are "behind the scenes" bug fixing some of the problems they have found such as the one above.

What are the advantages of version 2.3.6 compared to 2.3.5? I would like to asking about Anti Virus. What happen if I install 2 types of anti virus( Kaspersky and NQ Pro 6.0 ) for my android?

The advantages is new lock screen, phone logo, memo, and smoother scrolling.
I updated my software from 2.3.5 to 2.3.6 via the menu on my phone this morning, then I updated the firmware via Kies via USB this afternoon. I've noticed that Kies gives you different options when you connect via USB as opposed to WiFi.
The only difference I can see for doing a firmware update is that it puts a Books app into your applications folder and it has some new icon for unlocking your screen. Wow.
I did this by fully charging the phone and then doing the over the air update using wifi. Worked perfectly. I've had a small problem with the volume recently which I've only had since I upgraded.
Would recommend the over the air updates (Settings --> About phone --> Software update --> Update.)

There are custom ROM's, custom recoveries[RzRecovery and CWR], and loadsa other stuff and talk.
Flashing your official f/w with ODIN is preferable to Kies, which sucks, but using the Custom Recovery, now ClockworkMod Recovery version by dev arco, is so much better.
When XDA comes back on air, check it out......
In the meantime, peeps in the US should contact your local Representative and also Sign the Pledge as requested.
cudnt get it done thru Kies... so tried thru wifi and firmware updated without a hitch (battery needs to be sufficiently charged, say about 80% at least, jus to be safe)... and it worked beautifully...
since then, I havent faced any android pop-up errors which were irritating me earlier...

I have not noticed anything but the ugly text - on my previous so nice slide screen ;-) :-)
- but there can of course easily be something in the system itself, we do not notice
I updated mine via USB so battery charge not a problem. Rooted it and removed some bloatware to make it run good again (lots of apps installed). Used recovery mode to root. I'm interested to try ICS on it, but not sure it needs it. The phone runs quite well on 2.3.6
