Hi dimonakid,

There are solutions out there that let you track in realtime, but few work with the galaxy Y, I am looking specifically at one called instamapper...

Why do you want to track your son? are you looking at realtime tracking?

If he has your consent, and you wanted to, you could use something like "Prey" or "lookout" - both of which allow you to track your location on the software. I use both, as one will respond to a text, and mark itself missing and the other can be marked remotely, and remotely switch GPS on.

Once marked missing, I can then get emails and track the position on a map accurate to within 50 metres (standard GPS accuracy).

if you were to install these apps they would be on the tracked phone. You would track the phone through the internet, not via your own phone, unless you are going to access the tracking sites through your mobile browser.
