Default Rumor: Cupcake 1.5 to be the last version for Galaxy?

Ok, bad news everyone, but for the moment this is just rumors :

Taken out from android.hdblog.it (translated), Nov 04 (Source):

Unfortunately, the network appeared rumors that Samsung would indicate that the Galaxy will not be upgrading to the new OS 1.6, nor even to Eclair Donut 2.0. The news is also reflected in the information that we have in the office for several weeks. The thing is still not official and the hope remains. Probably will receive a further update for this device but always Cupcake 1.5. In fact besides Spica Samsung is working on two other terminals for the European market and the same will be updated to Spica Eclair 2.0 by early 2010 (again according to the rumors).

And some good news:

Among the bad news but it comes a nice .... Given the success of the rom for Galaxy created exclusively by drakaz for HDblog, we decided to give a new rom, high performance, with an entirely new graphics and we hope you enjoy it.
We show you a taste of what will be the dominant colors ... Soon you'll get more

Amazing that someone can give out a phone this expensive, then blow off all the buyers afterwards. It's my second and definitely my last Samsung product ever.

I'm taking it with a grain of salt. If it is true color me disappointed

"We show you a taste of what will be the dominant colors"

24bit color support?

I think its pretty likely the behold II will get 1.6 at least. It would be stupid for samsung not to just compile the same for the galaxy.

It seems Samsung is having much to learn from other phone manufacturers, especially from the Nokia.

A free tip:
After-marketing

I've been using Nokias since mid '90s, decided to give Samsung a try and bought a Galaxy.

Phone itself is so and so and the PC-software just sucks monkey balls. Seems Samsung isn't ready to compete at the big league, perhaps at the future but I doubt it.

I can't believe they'd simply drop it bearing in mind many of us have tied into two year contracts. That would be one of the most ruthless F*** you's I've ever heard of. Worse than an apple trick
So I call bullshit. But I guess I'll be waiting and seeing for the next couple of years either way

You have to remember that 2.0 will only be released around Q2 2010 so by then they probably have other phones to focus on. I think there's a pretty good chance this rumor might be true.

If I ever get another android phone, I'll probably go with HTC then. They have a proven track record and release updates in a timely fashion as well as better support both by the company and users.

uhm the 2.0 sdk was already released and the Motorola Droid which will be available from tomorrow will have Eclair...

if this rumor turns out to be true I won't buy anything that has "samsung" written on it, ever again.

skipping donut i get, but samsung must know what sort of effect not having the google navigator (witch only works from eclair onwards) available for the phone will have on the sales

if the galaxy stays at a sub-eclair build of android, no one's going to buy one anymore

Sadly I agree with many of the opinions voiced here.

Were it not for the dialer issue with the number keys during a call, I'd be very happy with the phone. This may in the end convince me to hand it back, however.... I love the screen, phone size, direction pad instead of trackball, I find the phone easy and quick to use for what I want it to do. I waited quite a while for this to be released, choosing not to get a magic/hero.

This is my first Samsung product. I had associated the company with quality, and therefore hoped to find the same. And then I loaded NPS.....

I'm still shocked you can release a product that simply does not work in 100% of cases (UK O2). However, eventually this is resolved, though I'd never use NPS for anything other than firmware updates.

If it turns out that there are no further (official) system updates, then like others this will sour my view of Samsung, (at least the mobile side of the business) . It would be disappointing since the product has such potential.

If samsung are not prepared to support the product, then give the code to the community, (HTC has released the kernel source) and for the proprietary bits provide a library with a clear documented API, but dont just forget the early adopters.

and ....

On the flip side, the whole Android update thing will be a nightmare for manufacturers. The speed on new OS releases, 1.5, 1.6, 2.0 etc must be difficult to support/test/control. And from the carriers point of view, I wonder how many handsets have been returned globally simply because they didnt have the latest update, and other handsets did....?
At some point as a manufacturer you HAVE to stop active development on a product, as your development teams move to the next product/platform.

How many US handsets will be returned to simply swap to the Droid?

I see where you're going. You have to remember the galaxy was only just released around June/July and not being able to support it for at least 1 year is really disappointing.

With reference to 2.0 being released in Q2 of 2010, that's what one samsung executive mentioned at one of the trade fairs. This was reported on android and me.

Samsung really needs to boost its android software support.

Unfortunately there is no promise in the manual or on the box that the Galaxy will be updated, it sux but any updates you get are gratis, as you have already recieved what you have paid for. We will just have to wait and see I guess.

it does say on the promotional material "powered by android which means you can stay up to date" lol

anyways i dont do rumors

rumor has it.......

look at the behold 2. they were rumoring 800mhz and 256 ram

people tried to tell the hopefulls that this would not be the case but we were often told we were wrong.
Scare mongering at its best

trust me, HDBlog have a good community but i can 100% say they are making guesses and not got anything from the horses mouth. community leaders should be more professional and not feed the rumor mill with bullshit

its as bad as a tabloid newspaper

They would argue that it is indeed powered by Android, unfortunately for us it's 1.5. Android as a term only really implies access to updates, not that any will be provided. I personally think that the wording they use between these handsets is very unclear, I initially thought I was getting a google phone that would update itself etc... It's not right that potential customers should have to trawl a million forums just to find out the specs to see whats what. If it has the logo on they should all work the same, UI's should be icing on the cake but I would like to see the option to run stock google versions too.

I've been talking to samsung support in their uk forums, and when i raised the question, a mod had this to say:

(Thread here)

It is not possible to upgrade the Galaxy's software to 1.6 at the moment. The Andriod over the air way to upgrade the software has been taken off the handset. It should be updated by using the New PC Studio software but is currently not available. Samsung have not confirmed if or when this will become available.

Currently, the NPS software is not fully compatible with the Galaxy. You can use it to transfer media files to the phone however it can't be syncronised or updated. To sync contacts, you must sync to your gmail account. Also you can transfer media files by using the phone as a mass storage drive. This cuts out the need for PC Studio.
This is currently being looked into by our Head Office and when a new software for the Galaxy is available, it shall be made known on our website.

So they're looking at NPS, but android updates doesnt seem to high on the priorities...

mate theyve given you the standardised "i want to update my firmware" response theyve given us all before but added 1.6 to make it sound more professional.

i very much doubt anyone on customer services know whats going on as last time people here spoke to them they said you have to update the device from service centres that do not exist in the uk lol (then o2 make them release ii4 via nps)
the only people that know are the developers and they seem to stay tight lipped in samsung

A meant that it is unnatural and abnormal for an operator to ask the manufacturer to give the users an update. Galaxy is not a re-branded handset (I mean like HTCs and Huawies witth a T-Mobile badge and custom firmware). It is totally and solely Samsung's responsibility to provide users with updates in a timely fashion, and users' complaints should be enough without an operator backing them up.

Lightbulb Hi guys... Some reason to keep hope the things are not so sad

I have both my galaxy a couple of weeks before and then learn what was currently happening.

It is the same here in France (of course) but from another forum I have found that:
Samsung Galaxy Upgrade Android 1.6 oder Android 2.0 | nodch.de

Basically, it says that Samsung is still wondering whether they will or not develop for the further Androids (for the Galaxy).

What I have suggested is to wait, but waiting while showing our interest for it to Samsung (without being too aggressive). Samsung's Android development team is on the beggining of its lifetime, so it is time to show them that this (android) market is for people who want to have the benefits of a based free OS.

I want you to know what we (on the french forum) plan to do for them to know:
We are currently writing a letter (firstly called petition) claiming Samsung to assume the fact they developed an Android-handy and if at least they don't update the ROM, they could give the HW-interface layer to the Android community for them to develop it (I didn't say 'us', because if I do anything, your pictures will be called mp3 and you will call the Zoo instead of playing a game) .

Here is a link to the topic, this is just an idea, but I think Samsung has good people in its team (technically the HW is pretty good : the first problems came from Android 1.5) and probably smart enough to understand that it is good for them to assume their role...

So the link is (in french, sorry):
Android 2.0 pour Galaxy (Page 10) - Samsung Galaxy (i7500) - Frandroid - Actualité de la plate-forme mobile Android

I hope it might help,
Romain

I think 1 road block in that idea might be that some drivers aren't using open sourced code... The hardware on the galaxy isn't bad it's just the software support that's lacking.

Well allow me to post another rumour which seems to suggest we may get both a 1.6 update soon, and 2.0 in 2010...

Google Vertaling

Apparently the last bit of sumsung's reply should translate as "When this will be is still unknown"

I'm Dutch, and the google translation is not very well. The correct translation of the e-mail is:

"Dear Sir,

the update to Android 1.6 will be skipped.
In 2010 an update to Android 2.0 will be made available.

When this will be is not yet known."

So, no 1.6, but 2.0 - if this rumor is correct.

ok guys - good news!
T-mobile confirmed that the Behold 2 will get Android 2.0... I don't see why the Galaxy wouldn't get it (or we couldn't port it...)

Here we go:

T-Mobile Behold II will ship with Android 1.5 but eventually support 2.0 – Android and Me

While I have enjoyed this phone and playing with it I think I am going to go out and but one of the new Motorola Droids since I am sure Motorola will take care of their customers better than Samsung has with the Galaxy. I really wish it was the opposite and the Galaxy was all that I would need but with the constant reboots, dropped calls, poor battery life, and myriad of other problems which should've been worked out of the phone a LONG time ago. I would like to say thanks to kam187 and rastaman and everyone else for trying to make this phone what it should've been but this news about no 1.6 or 2.0 has been the last straw for me. Good luck everyone see you on the Droid forum.

Hmm i think all these stories are mixed up!

Samsung confirmed no 1.6, but 2.0 for galaxy.
T-Mobile confirmed 2.0 for behold II

These other stories are older, and I think from ill informed customer service staff.

Google Releases Source Code for Android 2.0 (Eclair)

Can you use this to port 2.0 to the Galaxy?

Default No flashplayer 10 then?

Been waiting for news on the flashplayer and it now appears its not going to be available until the 2.0 Eclair update roll-out so this news could be damning.

I don't know why everyone is in panic.
If you expect a new firmware every 2 months then obviously you are not happy, but which brand updates their firmware every 2 months?
I read here that even Motorola became better than Samsung... please... Motorola! They have a HISTORY for bad devices, they just delivered the Droid with a speaker and camera problem. All they have is 2.0 exclusivity until the end of the year, and early next year everyone else will update, one way or the other. Their hardware built is nowhere near Samsung, their last successful phone was the Startac.
So it's just a matter of waiting till the end of the year and one way or another we will get an update.

thing is, from what little we've heard, we'll be half way in to the year before getting eclair on the galaxy

also it's gonna be "the other" way for us, since normal updating isn't possible because of samsung's incompetence

I don't think it will be half way into the year. T-mobile is already saying that the Behold 2 will be updated at the end of this year/ January... but hey, it's all speculation.
